citizen of the United States, formerly residing at Brooklyn, in the county/.of Kings and State of New York, but now residing at Floral Park, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Type-Slug-Casting Mechanism, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to improvements in type-casing machines and more especially to those of the linotype class which cast slugs bearing type characters on an edge thereof.
In machines as heretofore constructed, the mechanism for casting the'type slugs comprised a metal pot or crucible containing the molten type metal, the crucible containing a cylinder which communicated 4with a spout through which the type` metal was introduced into the mold and a plunger recipro` cable in the cylinder to force the type metal therefrom through the spout and into the mold to cast the slug therein. However, it has been found from experience that the return stroke of the plunger, while thc spout of the metal pot is still in engagement with the mold, causes the type metal to be drawn -back from the cast slug into-the throat of the metal pot, this being particularly the case in the casting of relatively large slugs,
. in consequence of which the cast slug is hollow on its bottom o r base.
The primary object of the p'r'esent invention is to provide novel and improved means whereby drawing of the type metal from the slug back into the throat of the metal-pot is avoided, with the result that the slug will contain the full amount of metal and will be solid, the means provided by the present invention for accomplishing thiseresult being relativly simple and inexpensive in its construction and positive and certain in its action, and, furthermore, it is readily applicable to metal pots or crucibles such as those commonly used upon slug or type-casting machines.

The present invention is applicable generally to slug or type-casting maclines of the types wherein the type metal is forced or injected into the slug or type mold by areciprocatory plunger. The preferred embodiment of the invention is shown in the present instance as applied to a metal pot upon machines of the linotype class, this mold wheel containing one or more -slotted molds 2, the mold when inuse beingadapted to receive a line of matrices 3 at-its forward side in a manner well understood by those familiar with machines `of this class. The metal pot or Crucible 4 comprises a metal well 5, a cylinder 6, usually arranged vertically within the well', a throat` 7 which leads from the bottom ofthe cylinder upwardly and forwardly into a mouth-piece 8, the latter having orifices through which the type metal passes from the throat and into the cavity of the mold, the forward face of the mouth-pielce being flat and adapted to lit closely against the rear vface of the mold.
