To all whomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, VAHE SOULTANLAN, a subject of and a citizen of Russia, residing at Roundhay, Leeds, Yorkshire, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamping Devices or Jigs, of which the following isa specification.
The present invention refers to an improved clamping device or jig, the object of which is to .grip and hold a body, such as a cylinder or a polygonal prism by gripping its cylindrical or polygonal sides in such manner that such bodies, gripped from time to time, shall be automatically brought into the same position as each other, even although the external diameters of the bodies may vary somewhat in dimensions. Such a jig, is particularly useful for positioning and holding such bodies during axial drilling or tapping or the like. I The inventionwill be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, whereon Figure l is a side elevation of the clamping device 'or jig, Fig. 2 being a plan view. Fig. 3 is an end elevation ofthe jig looking from the left of-Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is an end elevation looking from the right of 1, and Fig. 5 isa vertical section on the line XY of Fig. 2 to show two oppositely threaded revoluble trunnions hereinafter referred to.
From a socket 1 formed with a base plate 2 there extend two vertical parallel'pivot pins 3, 4, and pivotally mounted upon said pins3, 4 are, two similarjaws 5 and 6, each jaw having extending rearward arms 7 and 8, so that onejaw is freely carriedupon the pivot pin 3, and the other jaw is freely car-' lied on the pivot pin 4. Each jaw is formed on its gripping surface or face with a vertical V-shaped groove, the groove 5 in theface of one jaw 5 being precisely similar tothe groove 6 in the face of the opposedjaw6, see Fig. 2,and as shown a prism such $9 is intended to be grippedbetween the vertical-and angular walls formedby the V-shaped grooves 5?, 6 ofthejaws 5, 6.. 1

threaded to receive a screwthreaded shaft 1 I 12, see Fig; 5, the shaft 12 being formed at one end with a right-handed thread and at theother end with a left-handed thread, and consequently the trunnions 11 are screwthreaded to correspond, and the'axes ofthe trunnions 11 are parallel to the axes of the pivot pins 3, 4. A hand wheel l3 is fixed about centrally on the screw shaft 12 by which the latter shaft 12 can be revolved. Since an unlimited endwise motion of the screw shaft 12 would militate against the rapid use ofthe device, it has been found convenient according to thisinvention, while allowing the screw shaft 12 sufficient free enclwise adjustment, yet to provide: some limiting device. For this purpose the rim of the hand Wheel 13- passes between the forked ends 14 of a member 15 fmountedon the base plate, there being a clearance 16 between the forked members 14 and thesurface of the-rim of the wheel 13, so that although the shaft 12 is held against any considerable endwise motion the clearance space '16 between the members' 14 and the rim of the wheel 13 allows a limited amount of endwise motion. This, freedom of-endwise adjustment ofthe screw shaft 12 is important, Vises for gripping tubes bein knowncomprising two gripping jaws independently pivoted on. separate pivots, the meeting faces of the jaws having \leshaped grooves and having rearward arms drawn together by ascrewthreaded shaft whichis held by some; suitable stationary bearing against endwise motion while being permit-v ted tobe revolved, whereas it will be -observed in the present invention that the screw shaft 12 is permitted endwise adju'stment, =whereby an automatic centering of the prism gripped'is obtainedinstead of "a forced centering such as would be obtained ifno such endwisemotionfof thescrew shaft was p'ermitted .E} Withthe apparatus constructed according to this inventioniby. placing a prism such as;9;betw een the jawslfiiandfi andturning already 7 or spinning the wheel 13 to close the jaws the prism will be acted upon by the inclined walls of the opposed V'-shaped grooves 5 6", and as the jaws are brought together their faces will be caused to have automatic longitudinal adjustment relatively to each other, governed by the external configuration of the prism 9 and permitted by the free endway motion of the screw shaft 12; consequently when the prism ,9 is removed and another similar body placed between the aws and gripped its axis will be brought to the same position as that of the first body, and when two prisms of slightly differing diameters are successively clamped, they are centered in one coordinate with geometrical accuracy, and thus the drllli ng and tapping of such bodies is greatly facilitated, and moreover the tools will always act upon the axis of the body, and therefore the breakage of drills and taps in carrying out such operations is greatly lessened, which at the present time is very lmportant as regards rapid and economical production.
- What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A clamping device or jig for holding and centering cylindrical or polygonal prisms; comprising a base plate, two vertical pivot pins carried therefrom, a jaw revolubly mounted on each pivot pin, each jaw having a rearwardly extending arm, and each jaw having onits gripping face a precisely similarvertical V-shaped groove between the vertical angular' walls of which opposed V-shaped grooves the prism is to be gripped and centered, a vertical revoluble trunnion carried at the rearward end of each rearward aw arm, each trunnion having a through screwthreaded hole at right angles to its axis the direction of the thread of one trunnion being opposite to the direction of the thread of the other trunnion, a shaft having opposite handed screw threads to respectively engage the screwthreaded holes of said two trunnions, and means for revolving said screw shaft to cause said jaws to approach each other to grip the prism located between the inclined walls of said V- shaped grooves, said shaft being free to have endway motion to permit said jaws having longitudinal adjustment relatively to each other governed by the contact of the external surface of the prism'gripped with the inclined walls of the opposed V shaped e grooves.

A clamping device or jig for holding and centering cylindrical or polygonal prisms; comprising a base plate, two vertical pivot pins carried therefrom, a jaw revolubly mounted on each pivot pin, eachjaw having a rearwardly extending arm, and each jaw having on its gripping face a precisely similar vertical V-shaped groove between the vertical angular walls of which opposed V-shaped grooves the prism is to be gripped and centered, a vertical revoluble trunnion carried at the rearward end of each rearward jaw arm, each trunnion having a through screwthreaded hole at right angles to its axis the direction of the thread of one trunnion being opposite to the direction of the thread of the other trunnion, a shaft having opposite handed screw threads to respectively engage the screwthreaded holes of said two trunnions, means for revolving said screw shaft to cause said jaws to approach each other to grip the prism located between the inclined walls of said V-shaped grooves, said shaft being free to have endway motion to permit said jaws having longitudinal adjustment relatively to each other governed by the contact of the external surface of the prism gripped with the inclined walls of the opposed V-shaped grooves, and means for limiting the endway motion of said screw shaft.

A clamping device or jig for holding and centering cylindrical or polygonal prisms; comprisinga base plate, two vertical pivot pins carried therefrom, a jaw revolubly mounted on each pivot pin, each jaw having a rearwardly extending arm, and each jaw having on its gripping face a pre cisely similarvertical V-shaped groove between the vertical angular walls of which opposed V-shaped grooves the prism isrto be gripped and centered, a vertical revoluble trunnion carried at the rearward end of each rearward jaw arm, each trunnion having a through screwthreaded holeat right angles to its axis the direction of the thread of one trunnion being opposite to the direction of the thread of the other trunnion, a shaft having opposite handed screwthreads to respectively engage the screwthreaded holes of said two trunnions, a hand wheel fixed about centrally on said screw shaft for revolving the latter to cause said jaws to approach each other to grip the prism located between the inclined wallsof said V-shaped grooves, said shaft being free to have end.- way motion to permit said jaws having longitudinal adjustment relatively to each other governed by the contact of the external surface of the prism gripped with the inclined walls of the opposed V-shaped grooves.
4. A clamping device or jig for holding and centering cylindrical or polygonal prisms; comprising a base plate, two vertical pivot pins: carried therefrom, a jaw rev0 lublymounted on each pivot pin, each jaw having a 'rearwardly extending arm, the meeting faces of saidjaws each having a coinciding vertical groove of V-shape formed therein to receive the cylindricalor polygoward end of eachrearward jaw arm, each trunnion having a through screwthreaded hole at right angles to its axis the direction of the thread of one trunnion being opposite to the direction of the thread of the other trunnion, a shaft having opposite handed screw threads to respectively engage the screwthreaded holes of said two trunnions, a hand wheel fixed about centrally on said screw shaft for revolving the latter to cause said jaws to grip or release the cylindrical or polygonal prism, and a member mounted on said base plate and having upstanding forked ends between which the rim of said hand wheel passes, said forked ends of said member being spaced apart to permit said 5 hand wheel and said screw shaft to which said hand wheel is fixed having limited endway motion.
