(it he ievers' 12 em" into moperative position 14 will be moved rearwardly so as to swing the outer ends thereof forwardly thus moving the draw bar 15 forwardl This bar is connected by a link 21 and pull rod 18 to the forward ends of two links 19 and 20, the rearward ends of which are pivoted to the inner ends of two levers" 22 and 23, respectively. These levers are pivotably mounted adjacent their rear axle b, are pivotally brake beam 26 which carries at each end a brake block 27 movable into engagement with the rear wheel 28 of the vehicle. When the draw bar 15 is moved forwardly, the
and the outer ends of the levers levers 22 and 23 will be rocked about their pivots so as to cause rearward movement of the brake beam 26, thus bringing the blocks 27 into operative engagement with the Wheels28 so as to exert a braking e liect thereon. The pressure which is exerted on the blocks 27 will vary directly with the rearward pressure exerted on the forward portion of the draw bar thus giving direct and automatic control of the braking mechanism. When the end of the incline down which the vehicle is moving is reached, and the vehicle moves on level ground, or up hill, the forward section 4 of the tongue 9 will be moved forwardly by means of the spring 5, thus returning the levers 12, 14 22 and 23 to their initialposition and moving the brake blocks 27 out of engagement with the wheels 28. t
hen it is desired to back the vehicle, it is necessary to provide some means for preventing application of the brakes. For this purpose, a latch or looking hook 29 is hingedly mounted on the casing 3 adjacent the inner end thereof for movement about a pivot extending transversely ofv the casin This hook is adapted to engage into arecess 30 in the neck 2 of the stub portion 1 of the pole. The two sections of the tongue will then be locked against relative movement, thus permitting the tongue to be used in the ordinary manner and preventing operation of the brakes. Normally, of course, the hook or latch member 29 will be turned forwardly so asto permit the brakes to be operated in the 'manner described. v
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 3 to 5 inclusive, the levers 12', 14, 22 and 23, draw bar 15 and associated parts have been replaced by an operating cable 31 which is passed over grooved pulleys 32 and 33 rotatably supportedin brackets 34 and 35 mounted on thevrear axle b and tongue g respectively. The forward end of this cable is secured to a rectangularly disposed finger 36 provided at the inner rearward end of the bar 8 of casing 3 of the pole for tongue, the rearwardend of the cable being secured through an eye-bolt 37 in the brake outer ends, as at 24, on the connected by links 25 to a beam 26. In this form of the invention, as in the form illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, when the forward portion of the tongue or pole g is moved rearwardly, the brakes will be automatically applied to the rearwheels of the vehicle. Also, when the forward section is moved by the spring 5, the brakes will be automatically released.
lVhile the invention is disclosed as applied to a vehicle adapted to be drawn by draft animals, it will be obvious that it can beused equally well with any vehicle which is drawn by suitable draft means, the tongue g being used for securing the vehicle to the means for drawing the same. The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred or approved form of in- .vention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, etc., as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims. I
' aving thus described my invention what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a vehicle including front and rear axles having supporting wheels, and a tongue including a rearwardly projecting bar; of braking means including a pair of spaced levers pivotally mounted .upon each axle, links connecting the inner ends of the levers on the front axle to said bar, a draw bar having links at its outer end connected to the outer ends of the levers on the frontaxle, links pivotally connected to the inner ends of the levers on said rear axle, a link and pull rod connected to the last mentioned links and to said draw bar, 7 and a brake beam having links connected adjacent the ends thereof to the outer ends of the links on the rear axle, whereby as said tongue moves said first mentioned bar rearwardly, said links and levers, draw bar and pull rod will also be moved. so as to cause the brake beam to come into a binding en gagement with the wheels of the rear axle, .as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with a vehicle running gear including a braking means, of a tongue consisting of a rear portion and a forward member,
said rear portion comprismg a stub having a reduced neck extendwhereby the hook may be swung into the reoess to hold said casing from shifting along said neck, thus said head may be swung over to fit upon said casing to permit of the casing moving upon the neck, and said tongue being connected to said runninggear, said stub having a keeper strap thereon, a bar extended from the rear end of said oasing and passing through said keeper strap Copies of this patent may be obtained for CHARLES W. SAMMONS.
