the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for producing relatively coarse,

textile fabrics, in the nature of a hand 0perated loom.

The principal object of the-invention is to provide an apparatus which facilitates the weaving of the cords used, thereby constructing fabrics such as mats, rugs, and the like, relatively small in size, thick and strong in their nature.

A further object is to provide means whereby the warp threads may be turned axially permitting easy entrance of the filling threads between them.

A still further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the threads of the warp are alternately separated for the passage of the weft or filling threads, the operation being controlled by a single movement only, and finally, to provide an apparatus comprised of few and simple parts, of cheap construction.

These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a partial front elevational view showing an embodiment of the invention.

The apparatus consists of an end or base plate 15, to the ends of which are attached standards 16 extending to a plate 17, forming the base of the mechanism casing, which is comprised of side walls 18 and a cover plate 19 at the top.

the bar carrying a plurality of oppositely disposed hooks 28, similar hooks 30 extending downward through the plate 17, their upper ends or shanks 31 passing rotatably through a fixed plate element 32 secured in the casing between the side walls 18 in such manner as to sustain the shanks 31 by raising the collars 33 secured to them, pins 34. passing through the shanks beyond the collars, one of each row of shanks projects upwardly through the plate 19 and has attached to it a handle 35 by means of which the shank is turned, and secured to all of the several hooked shanks are pairs of ears 38 adapted to receive between them bars 40, the same being held in position by the pins 41 passing through the ears and bars in such manner that as the bars are given reciprocating motion, the hooks are caused to oscillate, thereby turning the bight formed in the upper looped ends 44: of the longitudinally disposed cords or warp 45, so as to permit the transverse cord or filling 46 to pass between alternate strands in the manner indicated in Fig. 1. In Figs. 1 and 5 an alternative method of oscillating the hook stems is presented, a series of pinions 50 being secured to the extending stems of the hooked shanks 31, similar pinions 52 being disposed u on the adjacent row of shanks and all 0 which are rotatable through the train of pinions actuated by the miter gears 53, one of which is secured to the shaft 5&, which extends outwardly at one side of the frame, and is furnished with an operating handle 55.

From the fore oing, it will be seen that a simple but high y efficient apparatus has been disclosed, materially assisting the weaver of coarse fabrics of the kind indicated, from material like coir, hemp, twines, straw, coconut fibers, reed, rushes, etc., etc.
