BRAKING DEVICE FOR RAILROAD-CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 30, 1919.
Application filed June 23, 1919. Serial No. 305,972.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STANLEY ZASKEY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of North Hatfield, in the county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Braking Devices for Railroad- Cars, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to safety stopping devices for railroad cars, tramways, and the like, and has for its'object to provide a reliable, quick acting brake that will automatically, without any attention from the motorman or engineer, be operated to stop the vehicle.
The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which characters of reference refer to like-named parts in the drawings.
Referring briefly to the drawings, Figure l is a View of a car in sectional elevation, the same showing my device attached.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional View of the valve mechanism of the same.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, 10 represents a car on tracks 11. On the underside of the end of said car are mounted a pair of brackets 12 supporting a shaft or pin 13. A fender 1 is pivotally mounted, as shown, on said pin. On the upper end 4 of the frame of said fender is pivoted a rod 5, which extends into the outlet of a sand container 19. A simple valve 6 is pivoted in said outlet, and the other end of said rod 5 is pivotally attached to said valve.
The compressed air pipe 8, leading from the air chamber 13, also enters said outlet, as shown. The valve 6, when in its horizontal, or closed, position, shuts both the air outlet and the sand outlet, and when in its vertical, or open, position, permits the flow of both sand and air.
Now it is apparent that, when the fender 1 strikes an object, it gives way, swinging back on its pivot 3. The upper end 4 is then swung so that the rod 5 pulls the valve 6 open, thus allowing sand to flow down the tube 7, and compressed air to enter so as to force the sand rapidly down the tube upon the track. Thus, in a very short time a large amount of sand will have piled upon the track, thus automatically stopping the car.
By provision of my device on each end of every car of a train, a complete sander for each track, it is evident that the train may be quickly brought to a stop to prevent serious accident such as is apt to occur if the train is free to travel forward.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. In a device of the class described, a fender pivotally mounted to the frame of a car, a sand container, a source of compressed air, a pipe connecting said source with said container, and a valve in said container operable by said fender to permit the outflow of sand from said container and of air from said source so as to force said sand from said container.
2. In a device of the class described, a fender pivotally mounted to the frame of a car, a sand container, a source of compressed air, an outlet from said container, a
pipe leading from said source into said outlet and directed toward the bottom thereof, and a valve therein operable by said fender to permit the outflow of sand and of air so as to force said sand from said container upon the track rail.
3. In a device of the class described, a fender pivotally mounted to the frame of a car, a sand container, a source of compressed air, a pipe leading from said source to said container, a valve in said container pivotally mounted so that when in vertical position, the outflow of both the sand and air is prevented, and when in horizontal position, both the air and .sand are free to flow, and a link connecting said fender with said valve.
Signed at Northampton in the county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts this seventeenth day of June A. D. 1919.
, STANLEY ZASKEY.
