Description
. UNITED STATES PATENT @FFTCE.
AXEL BERNHARD KJ'ELLGREN, 0F GOTTENBORG, SWEDEN.
ROCK-DRILL.
Application filed. March 23, 1918.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AXEL BERNIIARD KJnLLennN, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Gottenborg, in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rock-Drills, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a machine to be employed for such rock-drilling work which has heretofore been carried out man ually by means of sledge-hammers. When this manual drilling is to be accelerated, it usually done by three men, one of which guides and turns the bit while two men take care of the sledging. This work in its entirety is effected by the machine according to the present invention.
The invention is principally characterized by this that a rock drill with rammer and bit-turning device is provided with an endless chain or the like with projecting tappets or catches, a projection on the rammer and rotatable arms or the like connected with the bit projecting into the path of said tappets or catches so that the rammer may be lifted and the bit may be turned by means of the endless chain.
In the accompanying drawing an embodiment of the invention is shown by way of example. Figure 1 shows a side view and Fig. 2 a front view of the machine. Fig. 3 shows the upperpart of the machine viewed from above and in section on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4: shows the lower part of the machine, likewise in plan and in section on the line 1-4; in Fig. 1.
The machine consists of a frame 1 with feet 2 which are adjustable in height in order to make the same adjustable for vary ing height of the ground around the point to be worked by the bit. At their lower ends the feet are preferably formed into plates 3 which may be loaded with stone in order to keep the machine steadily in place during the working. The frame 1 is provided with guides 1, between which the rammer 6 is movable up and down. Rope pulleys or chain-wheels S are journaled in suitable brackets 7 on the guides, a rope or a chain 9 being laid over the said pulleys or wheels. The chain 9 is provided in the instance shown, with two tappets or catches 10 into the path of which a projection 11 on the rammer 6 projects. The tappets 10 are preferably placed in such manner that "when one of them is in its highest position Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 30, 1919.
Serial No. 224,231.
the other one occupies its lowermost position, hence, when one tappet has lifted the rammer 6 and afterward swings over and around the upper wheel 8, so that the projection 11 loses its support, the rammer is not prevented by the other tappet from falling freely down on the bit 12. This bit occupies the position shown in the drawing and is preferably guided at its lower end by a studding 13 fixed to the lower portion of the frame 1, and at the top by a frame or plate 14: which is movable between the guides in order to follow the bit whcndriven downward.
The device for imparting a step-by-step rotary motion to the bit consists of an elon gated pinion 15 journaled along one of the guides 1, said pinion meshing with a toothed wheel 16 attached to the bit 12. At the lower end of the pinion 15 there is secured a beveled gear wheel 17 meshing with a similar wheel 18 fixed to the shaft 19. An arm 20 is mounted on this shaft, one end of said arm projecting into the path of the tappets 10 on the chain 9. The arm 20 is connected with the shaft 19 by means of a ratchet or the like in such manner that it is free to turn on the shaft in one direction only.
WVhen turning in the opposite direction the arm also turns the shaft 19. T he latter movement is effected by one of the tappets 10 coming into contactwith the arm. The pinion 15 is thus turned by the action of the wheels 17 and 18 and causes the toothed wheel 16 and the bit 12 to move one step corresponding to the stroke of the arm 20. When the arm is released by the tappet 10, the arm swings back actuated by a spring or a weight without bringing the shaft 19 along. The tappets 10 being arranged in such manner that one of the same lifts the rammer while the other actuates the arm 20 and causes the bit 1.2 to turn just before the completion of the lifting movement, the bit 12 will thus be turned one step for each blow of the rammer 6.
In the machine herein described and represented in the drawing a shaft 21 provided with a crank wheel 22 and a chain wheel 23, is journaled in the upper portion of the frame, a chain 25 being laid over the said chain wheel 23 and over another chain wheel 24 attached to the shaft of the upper wheel 8. The last-mentioned arrangement is provided for the manual operation of the machine, but it is evident that the machine may also be driven by means of a suitable motor.
It will also be understood that the'machine may be modified in many respects as re gards the construction of the same, without departing from the principle of the invention.
