CONTROL DEVICE FOR WINDING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept, 23, 1919;

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN WV. VVns'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Braintree, county of Norfolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Control Devices for WVinding- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a controlling device for winding machines, as disclosed in my Patent #1,030,147, of June 18, 1912.
The winding device shown in the above patent consists essentially of a platform balance, one platform of which is adapted to receive the load or filled spools of thread and the other of which is adapted to receive the thread weights or units to balance the load. A rod depends from the load platform and supports a spool or reel of thread on its lower end from which thread is transferred to the arbor of a winding machine. Before winding a predetermined amount of thread upon the arbor of the winding machine, the controlling device is initially balanced, and then a thread weight or unit is removed from the weight platform. The load platform of the device thereupon descends until it rests upon a stop, and permits the operation of the winding machine, which withdraws thread from the thread spool or reel disposed below the weight platform. The unwinding continues until the weight of thread removed from the reel is equivalent to the thread weight or unit initially removed from the weight platform and, the balance of the device being thus restored, the load platform rises. In its return to normal balanced position, it operates a device that stops the winding machine.
In practice, a plurality of winding machines and control devices are employed, arranged in very close order in rows. There is always a certain amount of jar and vibration inherent to the operation of these machines, and it sometimes happens that when a controlling device is very nearly in itsbah anced condition, just previous to its normal control of its winding machine, the vibration of the machine causes the balance beam of the control device to oscillate and cause the improper control of the winding machines.
An object of my invention is to provide the control device with means whereby the vibration of the winding machines is practically entirely absorbed beforebeing trans mitted to the balance beam of the control I device and thus become ineffective in cansing said beam to osclllate, to cause improper control of the w ndlng machine.

As before stated, in practice aplurality of these machines are arranged in close order in rows. It is common that whereas, one machine may be winding thread to a certain weight, the adjacent machines may be winding thread to different weights. The thread weights or units for each machine are placed on the bench by the machines, and it is of common occurrence that the thread weights for adjacent machines become exchanged and for the operator, in ignorance of such exchange, to cause improper weights to be wound upon the machines.
Another object of my invention isto provide means whereby there is but little danger of interchange of weights. I accomplish this object of my invention by providing the control device with a thread weight or unit receptacle arranged on the device between the two platforms, and in which the thread weights or units may be disposed when not in use on one of the platforms. Because of the provision of a receptacle for the thread weights or units not in use in the most convenient position between the two platforms upon the control device, there is but small danger of interchange of units between adjacent machines.
A further object of my invention is in a method of manipulating the thread weights or units in the weighing of the amount of thread transferred from the thread reel to the arbor or the winding machine, whereby a minimum number of tread weights or units are employed.
It has heretofore been customary to place thread weights or units upon the weight platform of the control device to balance the load and then remove a thread weight from the weight platform, whereupon the windin machine, being unbalanced, will operate to remove an equivalent weight of thread from the thread reel, after which the ma- 60. The means whereby I accomplish this ob-- chine will stop. A second thread weight is then removed and the operation is repeated. For each unit of thread wound, a separate thread weight or unit must be employed.
In my improved method, I initially balance the device and then remove a thread weight or unit, which is placed in the receptacle provided on the device between the two platforms. The device, being now unbalanced, operates to cause the unwinding of an equivalent weight of thread, whereupon the winding machine is stopped as heretofore.
The previously removed weight is thereupon removed from the container, and
* placed on the load platform to cause the un* balancing of the device, and the control device thereupon operates to cause the removal of an equivalent weight of thread from the thread reel, whereupon the device again re-' turns to balance andthe winding machine is again stopped. A second weight is then removed from the weight platform to the container, as before, and the winding operation repeated. The thread weights or units are transferred in steps, from the weight plat form, to the intermediate container, and then" to the load platform, where they remain during the operation of winding the entire load. By this method of winding, but substantially one-half of the number of thread weights or units, are needed, over the method heretofore employed.
It has heretofore been common to arrange the thread spools or load directly upon the load platform. Due to the close arrangement of the plurality of combined control devices and winding machines, it is difficult for the operator to remove a selected thread spool from the load on the platform of one device without touching the load on the adjacent device, and causing the adjacent device to improperly control its winding machine.
A further object of my invention is in the provision of a thread spool or load holder that is pivotally supported on the load pl atform, whereby the holder and load may be rotated to move a selected thread spool to the position desired for removal, whereby the necessity for reaching between the thread spools of two adjacent machines is obviated.
The rotatable load holder is also elevated above the load platform to provide space on said platform for the disposition of the thread weights or units transferred to said platform in the operation of the device.

As here shown, the control device is mounted upon the winding machine 10 of the Universal type, asdescribed in Patent #801,941, dated October 17, 1905, granted to S. WV. WVardwcll.
The control device comprises a load platform 11 and a weight platform 12 mounted upon a balancing beam 13 pivoted to the standard 14 of the frame 15. Rods 16 and 17 are secured to said platform, and extend through bosses 18 of said frame 15, and are pivoted to links 19, which in turn are pivoted to a post 20 secured in the standard 14, whereby said platforms are maintained in their original positions regardless of the disposition of load thereon and of the angularity of the balance beam with respect to said platforms. Such an arrangement is common in platform balances.
The rod 16 extends beneath the frame 15, and terminates in a bar 21 having a rod or pin 22 adapted to receive the thread reel or spool 23. The bar 21 is provided with a weight 24 at the opposite end of said bar to counterbalance the weight of the thread reel 23. Thread is transferred from reel 23 to the mass of thread on the winding machine 10, as is described in the above mentioned patents.
A rod 26 is secured in the load platform 11, and extends above said platform and forms a support for the spare filled thread spools 23. Said spool holder comprises a base portion having extended arms, in the extremities of which are secured pins 27 adapted to receive the thread reels. The base portion is arranged to fit over the rod 26 secured in the load platform, and ismain tained in elevated position above said platform by the tube 28 rotatably disposed over said rod 26 and upon which the spool holder rests. The spool or load holder is loosely arranged on said rod 26, whereby it may be rotated by the operator to move a selected spool into convenient position for rem-oval, or for the placing of a new spool upon one of the rods or pins 27.
A receptacle 29 is secured to the standard 1 1 midway between the load and weight platforms, and is arranged to receive and hold the thread weights or units 30 not in use on the platforms.
The thread weights or units 30 may be made of any shape and material of sufficient weight and, as here shown, comprise cans, in which may be placed an amount of a heavy material, such as shot, for instance. until the weight of the can and contents is equal to the desired weight of thread to be wound from the reel 23 disposed below the load platform to the arbor of the winding machine 10. u
A resilient disk 31 of rubber is disposed over rod 16 between the boss 18 of the frame 15 and the hub of the load platform 11 and forms means whereby the or vibrations of the winding machine is prevented from being transmitted to the balance beam 13, to cause said beam to oscillate and cause im proper control of the winding machine, as might result from direct contact of the hub of the load platform 11 with the end of boss 18.
In operation, a number of reels or spools of thread 23, four being here shown, are placed on the spool holder supported above the load platform 11, and a reel is placed on the pin or rod 22 of the bar 21 below the load platform. The device is then balanced by placing thread weights or units 30 on the weight platform 12. A thread weight or unit is then removed to the receptacle 29, and, the device being unbalanced, the'load platform 11 descends until it rests upon the rubber disk 31 on the boss 18, and the windingmachine is set in operation.
Thread to the equivalent Weight of the removed thread weight or unit 30 being removed from the lower reel 22, the balance of the device is again restored and the winding machine is stopped. The weight in the receptacle 29 is then placed on the load platform 11 and a second winding operation takes place. This repeated operation takes place with the thread weights or units 30 being transferred from the weight platform 12 to the receptacle 29 and then to the load platform 11 until the lower reel 22 is exhausted, whereupon the empty reel is placed upon the spool holder disposed above the load platform 11 and a full reel placed on the rod 21 below said load platform and the winding operation continued.
I claim 1. In a control device for winding machines, a load platform, a weight platform, a balance beam connecting saidplatforms, a supporting frame therefor, a rod connected with said load platform and extended through said supporting frame, and a resilient disk arranged on said rod between said load platform and supporting frame upon which said load platform is adapted to rest in the operating condition of the winding machine.
2. The method of operating the control device for a winding machine which consists in initially balancing the device, transferring a thread weight from the weight platform to the receptacle, thereby causing the unbalancing of the device and permitting the winding machine to operate to remove an equivalent weight of thread until balance is again restored and the machine is stopped, and then transferring the thread weight from the receptacle to the load platform, thereby causing the unbalancing of the device and the winding of an amount of thread upon the machine equivalent to the thread weight, and continuing the steps of transferring thread weights from the weight platform to the receptacle and thereafter to the load platform until the desired amount of weights to be arranged on and removed from c the platform, said load holder arranged to receive and support pools of thread.

In a control device for thread winding machines a balance beam, a platform pivoted thereto and arranged to receive thread weights, a load holder rotatably supported on said platform and spaced thereabove to permit thread weights to be arranged on and removed from said platform, said load holder arranged to receive and support thread spools.
5. In a control device for thread winding machines, a balance beam, a weight platform carried thereby, a rod secured to said platform and extended thereabove, a load holder rotatably arranged on said rod and spaced above said platform, and means on said load holder to receiveand support thread spools.
6. In a control device for thread winding machines, a balance beam, a platform carried thereby, a rod carried by said platform and extended thereabove, a load holder rotatably arranged on said rod and spaced above said platform to permit weights to be placed on and removed from said platform, said rod extended above said load holder to receive a thread spool, and other rods carried by said load holder arranged to receive thread spools.
7 In a control device for winding machines, two weight platforms, a balance beam connecting said platforms, a supporting frame therefor, a rod secured in and ex tended above one of said platforms, a load holder pivotally arranged on said rod and a sleeve disposed over said rod between said platform and load holder to maintain said load holder in elevated position above said load platform.
