UNITED sTATns PATENT onruon.
'BURTON MIDDLETON, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE WILLIAMS PIVOT SASH COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION.
WINDOW-SASI-I LOCK AND PULL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 23, 1919.
Application led March 2, 1917. Serial No. 152,120.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, BURTON V. MIDDLE- ToN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Window-Sash Locks and Pulls, of which the following is a specification.
rlhe invention relates to a combined sash lock and pull for use in windows where the sash is horizontally pivoted in the frame; and the object of the improvement is to combine a lock for the upper rail of the sash.
with a normally detached pole which will automatically release the lock when operated to open the sash.
This object is attained by providing a shoulder upon the lock bolt, a T-shaped aperture in the lock case adjacent to the shoulder, and a pole having aT-head adapted to be entered through the aperture and operated against the shoulder in the act of pulling or swinging the sash from .its closed position.
The object of the invention thus set forth in general terms is attained by the construction and arrangement illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of a preferred embodiment thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a window frame showing the upper sash provided with the combined lock and pole;
Fig 2, a front elevation of the lock constructed in accordance with the present improvement;
Fig. 3, a vertical section on line 3-3, Fig. 2, showing the T-head of the pole in operative position; and
Fig. 4, a detached perspective view of the T-head of the pole.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
The lock 1 preferably comprises the case 2, within which is operatively mounted the bolt 3 which operates endwise in the guideways 4 and 4a and is normally held in locking position by the spring 5, all of which parts may be of any ordinary well known construction.
For the purpose of the present invention, the bolt is provided with a ange or lug 6 forming the shoulder 7, opposite which i shoulder is provided the T-shaped aperture 8 in the face plate of the case so arranged that the shoulder of the bolt is located in a plane just below the laterally enlarged cross portion of the aperture, as shown quite clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The window pole 9 is provided with the curved shank 10 having a cross bar 11, forming a T-head upon its upper end, and for the purpose of unlocking and opening the window sash, the T-head of the pole is inserted through the laterally enlarged upper cross portion of the aperture 8 in the face plate of the lock, thus bringing the cross bar upon the shoulder 7 of the bolt, as shown in Fig. 3; after which a downward pull upon the pole operates to release the latch, which movement is permitted by the entrance of the curved shank 10 of the pole downward into the stem portion of the T aperture.
After the bolt has been withdrawn from its keeper 12, the window sash 13 is free to be swung into open position, as shown in Fig. 3, by continuing the downward pull of the pole which is accomplished by the action of the cross bar 11 of the T-head of the pole operating, and rotating, if need be, inside the face plate of the lock in a manner well known in this art; it being understood that the aperture 8 is arched or otherwise extended upward in its middle portion to accommodate the curved shank of the pole in this operation.
For closing the window it is only necessary to insert the T-hcad of the pole through the aperture 8 against the lock bolt, whereupon the sash may be pushed upward by action of the curved shank of the pole against the upper rim of the aperture 8; and if the lock bolt is not provided with the usual beveled end 14 for automatically entering the keeper, the T-head of the pole may be pulled downward while being pushed forward against the shoulder 7 of the bolt for withdrawing its protruding end within the case, to permit a complete closing of the sash.
I claim l. A sash lock comprising a bolt with aA shoulder thereon and a face plate with a T- shaped aperture therein opposite the shoulder and a normally detached hole having a T-head on its end adapted to enter the aperture for operating upon the shoulder to open I, 'Y Lemon [i the locknnd upon the lnni sd Of the face Y its end ztdaptedV t0 enter the aperture for platefor swinging the sash, both'by downoperating on the shoulder to openthe lock Ward pull of the pole. and upon the inner side of the Vface plate 10 Y 2.
