MICHIGAN FOLDING TOP FOR VEHICLES AND 131m.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept, 23, 1919.
Application filed May 27, 1919. Serial No. 236,890.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MAX Boon, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Detroit,.Michigan, have invented certain ated easily by a single individual and the folds of the covering material to be properly arranged.
' The invention also aims to provide a conin the same plane with the main standard, reducing, as far as possible, the necessity of ofl'set pivot connections and obviating the necessity of any lateral bends in the linkage arrangement. 7
With these and other objects in View the invention includes the novel features of construction and arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described, my said invent'ion being defined by the appended claims.
A top embodying my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
F igure 1 is a side elevation slu'nving the top in its extended position in full lines and in apartially folded position in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail.
In Fig. 1 the top being shown in side elev tion, only thest-andard bow arms etc, on oneside appear, but it will be understood that theyare duplicated on the, other. side, only one side being shown for convenience for illustration.
Similarly, in the following description and claims, reference is made for convenience to the members on one side only and reference to one side is to be understood as including both sides.
In the drawing the numeral 1 designates the body of a vehicle for which the top is adapted and which is intended to be representative of any type of vehicle or motor boat, needing such a protective covering.
The top covering material is indicated at 2 supported by the folding frame hereinafter described. This includes a main standard '3 designed to have its lower end pivotally suppprted in any suitable manner from the body of the vehicle, as indicated at 3, and designed to cooperate with the usual rear bow arm 4 which may be pivoted to the standard at 4. however, that if desired the rear bow arm might be pivoted to the body and'the standard to the bow arm or bothinight be connected to the same pivot 3, these being recognized equivalents. 5 designates the outrlgger bow or arm thereof which has its rear end pivotally connected at 5* at the front end of a link or member 9 pivotally connected in turn to the standard.
The front auxiliary or supplemental pivot supporting bow arm or member 7 is pivotally connected to the outrigger bow arm at 7 and in the same plane therewith by means of an upstanding lug or lugs and this how the omrigger bow arm in the extended and normal position of the parts as shown in full linesin Fig. 1. To the supplemental bow arm 7 is pivotally connected at 8 the forward end of a link or member 8 which is in turn connected to the link 9 by a suitable pivot 9 and is extended beyond said pivot 9 and the extended end indicated at 8"is pivotally connected by link 6 with the standard 3; at a point below the point of pivotal connection of the link 9 as indicated at 6. The link 9 is extended rearwardly of its point of pivotal connection 9" with the standard and said extended part 9 is adapted to form or carry a cover supporting bow arm. The outrigger bow arm 5, and the bow arm 7 and link 9 may be made wholly of metal and integral with the bows, thus forming an all metal construction.
My present arrangement, however, adapts itself especially for use in connection with wooden bows and to this end the outrigger bow arm 5, the bow arm 7 and the extended part 9, of the link 9, are made in the form of or provided with bow sockets for the reception of the arms or ends of wooden bows which are indicated respectively at W, WV and WV- The extended part 9", being in the form of the bow socket for a wooden bm would It will be obvious;
' arm inclines rcarwardly and upwardly from necessarily be of material To sides of the standard or preferably a sleeve R on the upper end of the standard 3 and secured thereto by the rivet or pivot pin S as shown in Fig. 2. By locating the extende 'd part 9*, in the same plane with the standard and the bow arms 5 and 7 in the same plane, it will be seen that only the links 6 and 8 are connected to the other parts and these 111 such a manner that no lateral bends or ofisets are required.
3 To limit the upward movement of the parts in the extension of the top I may providea pin 10 on the link 9 which is adapted to contact with the underside of the link 8.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is i In a folding top, a supporting standard, an outrigger bow arm, a'link connecting the extremity of the outrigger bow arm to the standard, a member pivoted to the outrigger bow arm and normally.inclining rearwardly and upwardly, a second member pivotally connected to said first named member and to saidlink, one of said mem bers carrying a cover supporting bow, said second member having a part extended beyond its point of pivotal connection with said link, and a link connecting said extension with the main standard, below the pivot point of the first named link, said first named link having a part extendedin rear of its point of pivotal connection with the standard to constitute a cover support ing how.
2. In a folding top, a supporting standard, an outrigger bow arm, a link connect: ing the extremity of the outrigger bow arm to the standard, a bow arm pivoted to the outrigger bow arm and normally inclining rearwardly and upwardly a second link pivotally connected to said how .arnrand to said first named link, said secondlink having a part extended beyond its pointoi' pivotal connection with the first link, and a third link connectingsaid extension with the main standard below the pivot point I of the first named link, said first named link having a part extended in ieariof its point of pivotal connection with ,thest-and-,
aid to constitute a cover supporting bow arm.
8. In a folding top, a'maln standard, an
outrigger bow arm, a link pivotally con-I nected to said. outrigger bow arm and ex.
tending across the top of the standard in the same vertical plane, and a clip having a curved portion secured to the under side.
of said bow socket portion and a pair of & spaced lugs depending i rom oppositesides of said curved portion and embracing the standard and pi 'otally connected thereto :7 In testimony whereof, I aiiir: my s gnature.
