Description

M. A. REPLOGLE.
CEMENTING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 11, 1919.
1,316,805. PatentedSept. 23,1919.
311mm for Mark f7. Rep/oy/e r! cmmmqm I-mmmRAP" 130., WASHINGTON, at c.
' UNITED STATES PATENT MARK APREPLOGLIE OF AKRON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE GOODYEAR TIRE 8 RUBBER COMPANY, OF AKRON, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
CEMENTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept, 23, 1919.
Application filed June 11, 1919. Serial No. 303,402. I j
.especially that used as inner tubes for tires.
It has been found, with devices hitherto in use for the purpose of cementing the edge of a traveling sheet of material, that the extreme outer edge would frequently not be treated with the cementing liquid owing to its meandering motion, its unevenness or to its tendency tocurl, and furthermore, it sometimes happened that so much liquid was applied that it would get on the side of the material which it was not desired to cement.
It is, accordingly, an object of my invention to provide a device wherein the several objections above referred to will be overcome or avoided.
A further object of my invention has been to provide a simple device that will uniformly apply a film of liquid to the edge of a moving strip of material without allowing the liquid to get on the wrong side of the material and one which will compensate for any unevenness of travel of the material, or any curl at the edge thereof.
In the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention and in which similar reference numerals designate like parts:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the deviceof my invention in operation;
Fig.2 is an elevation; and
Fig. 3 is a detail of the cement applying element.
In the specific and particular embodiment of my invention herein disclosed an upright .10 is bolted or otherwise secured to any suitable support, and is provided at its upper end with ears or lugs 11 between which is mounted a horizontally disposed pinion or t gear 12 having a thumb nut 13 secured thereto by which the pinion may be rotated.
A rack 14 having its toothed. surfacelf) in mesh with the pinion 12, isfitted to slide oluble wheel, roll or other suitable element 19 the work-face of which is preferably concaved as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
More specifically the preferred conformation of the work-face of the roll is that shown in Fig. 3, that is to say, incross-section the line is straight for a portion of its length, A-+B, it then takes an angle of approximately 15 degrees from the point B to the point C, for a length substantially equal to the width of the skived portion of the strip; from the point C the line rises on a curve of gradually increasing pitch to D, for a purpose that will presently appear.
Arranged below theroll, "or wheel so as to surround the lower part thereof is a re-' ceptacle 21 in which the cement or. other liquid is contained; the wheel dipping in the liquid as it is revolved by frictional Contact with the material.
A strip or sheet of material 20 to the edge 20 of which the liquid in the receptacle 21 is to be applied (specifically a strip of rubber material having a skived edge'20 is caused to travel so that the edge of the material is passed inproximity to the upright 10 and the element carriedthereby.
edges of the latter mayproject, and thus be engaged by the cementing element.
The operation of my device isas follows: The strip of material 20 is brought in place on the conveyer belt 22 and the-rack 14 is adjusted by means of the pinion 12 17 sufliciently overhangs the material, to cause the roll 19 to bear by gravity. against the edge of the material, In other. words the roll issuspendedofi center 'bythe raclg .;10
so that the'point of support 16 of the arnf 14c. The contact of the moving strip 20 with the wheel 19 will, .in operation, cause the wheel to revolve and apply to the edge 21 of the material a film of the liquid contained in the receptacle in which the wheel dips. Normally the skived portion 21 of the strip is engaged by the part of the wheel B C, as shown in Fig. 3, but, if the edge of the material should be curved at places, the curved portion would nevertheless be cemented by reason of the curvature of the wheel face, and by the wheels being pressed against the edge by gravity. In the same way if there be any unevenness of elther 1n the strip itself, or in its travel, the face of the wheel will closely follow the edge of the material.
While I have shown my device applied to but one edge of the strip 20 it is usually customary to provide a similar device for the opposite edge, and by reversing the direction of travel of the strip, as by passing it over a friction roll or the like, to cement the other side of the material at its opposite ed e.
Although I have shown a specific embodiment of my invention and referred to its use in a particular industry, it will be understood that changes and modifications may be made in the device without in any sense departing from the essence of the invention as defined by the appended claims, and that the device will have utility in many analogous arts.
