To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER W. SIBsoN, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in TransmissionQhains, whereof the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to transmission chains capable of being spirally wound upon a receiving drum or beam in such a way as to prevent interference or overlapping.

The structure by which I attain this desideratum will be best understood from the drawings in which Figure I, is a diagrammatic view illustrating the practical application of my improved chain in association with a receiving or winding drum therefor.

Referring first to Figs. II, and III, my invention as therein embodied consists of a chain, comprehensively indicated at 1, and composed of a series of link members 2, 2, preferably arranged alternately in groupings of twos and threes forming composite link sections. It is to be understood that these numbers are arbitrarily chosen and may be varied according to the particular use to which: such chains are to be applied. As clearly shown in Fig. II, the axes of the pivotal pins 3, by which the interlinking is effected are inclined to the normal, or perpendicular to the center line of the chain, so as to make other than a right angle with said center line. wherein I have shown a receiving drum or beam 10, upon which the chain is adapted to be wound. During the rotation of the drum, the chain automatically collects spirally thereon, the pitch of the spiral being determined by the inclination of the pivotal pins for the links. The accumulation upon the receiving drum will thus be evenly dis tributed lengthwise thereof without danger of interference or overlapping between successive turns.
I am aware that the same results have heretofore been accomplished by offsetting successive links or groups of links in a predetermined order but in such designs, the pivotal axes of the links have been maintained at right angles to the longitudinal My improved construction diflers essentially from the previous designs in that its chief characteristics reside in the inclination of its pivotal axis as hereinbefore described, while at the same time, perfect symmetry of loading is secured with respect to the longitudinal outer line and the load more evenly distributed throughout the length of thechain as a consequence.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A linked transmission chain having the pivotal axes of its links inclined to the normal.
2. A composite transmission chain having its links parallel with its longitudinal line and the pivotal axes of the links inclined to the normal.
