When the carriage 1 is moved to the right, as=shown injdotted lines in Fig. 3, the stop-13 arrests the unevearm 'Z, causingthe latter to be rocked on the will becarried to the right, with the result that the side work holder 6 is withdrawn from the work.
The hanger 10, above referred to, is slotted as indicated at 141 to adjustably receive a bolt 15 by which it may be fastened to the lathe carriage 1. The parts just described are so mounted on the carriage 1 as to bring the side work holder 6 at a weak ened or unsupported part of the work 3, for instance, substantially midway between the lathe centers. At such point the vi bration set up in the work 3 by the action of the cutters 2 striking the same, is the greatest, and it is here that the work escapes tothe greatest degree the action of the cutters, resulting in the irregular and uneven turning of the stick. The work holder 6 resists this tendency of the work to vibrate,
:as it supports thework at the side opposite that upon which the cutters 2 are operating.
Near the lathe center 1 I provide a side guide 16 which 1s mounted on an arm 17 slmilar to the arm 7 shown 111 F 1g. 3, and
.,;similarly mounted to oscillate on a hanger 18 adjustably carried by the table 1. There is a weight 19 also carried by the lower end of this guide arm 17, and a rod 20 asses through registering eyes in the wei-g its 12 :and 19; set screws-21 being employed to adjustably hold the ends of the rod 20 therein. By loosening the set-screws 21, the arms 7 and 17 together with their associated parts, may be moved farther apart or closer to one another. Through these connections it will be understood that the side work holder 6 is compelled to oscillate in unison withthe side guide'lG. Such side guide 16 is arranged to bear against a part of the stick 3 which is to be turned similar to that part against which the side work holder 6 engages; but the side guide 16 is disposed very close to one of the centers at where the work is supported, and where such work therefore is subject'to very slight, if any, vibration. Y
The said guide 16 will therefore be unaffected by any vibration of the stick and, as it governs the action of the said work holder 6, it will tightly hold the said work holder against an intermediate part of the work which is unsupported and has a tendency to vibrate greatly. Atthe same time, as-the same erosssection is to be given the stick 3 at both the points where the side work holdern6 and the side guide 16 engage, any particular pattern may be turned Without interference from these parts, as the same may oscillate back and forth about the 'ppivots 8, alwaysbearing effectually against the side of'the stick 3.
Referring now to the under work holder 5,
the sameis preferably mounted as close to the'side work holderb as practicable, and
.thisuund'er work holder 5 is also movably supported so that it may follow any particular outline or curvature given to the stick 3, and whereby it may also be depressed away from the stick 3 when the latter is to be removed from or inserted in the lathe centers. g
In the embodiment shown in the present drawings, the under work holder 5 is carried on and forms an offset of a round bar 22 slidingly fitted through an opening in a bearing block 23 and adjustably held therein by a-set screw2t. A- bracket25 carries a pivot 26 on'which the bearin block 23 is adapted'to rock; the bearing block 23 and bar 22 forming an oscillating support for the under work holder 5;
end-30 of the weighted arm 7 in a manner to be hereinafter described.
A coil spring- 31 is connected between the bearing block 23 and the bent over end of a post 32 adjustable vertically through the bracket 25 and secured in the desired position by a set screw 33. The function of the spring 31 is to'yieldingly hold the under work holder 5 against the work 3 and to allow the same to be depressed when required. The screw 3e threaded in the overhanging end 35 of thepost 36 forms an adjustable stop to limit the upward movement of the bar 22 when the stick 3 is removed from the lathe centers. At 37 is shown a setscrew whereby the post 36 may be vertically adjusted.
In the same way that the side guide 16 governs the movement of the side work holder 6, so the'action of the under work holder 5 iscontroll'ed-by anunder guide '38,
which is also made to contact with the under side of the stick 3 at a point thereon under guide 38 being also located as close as "practicable to the center et-or at other point along the stick wherethe same is-sup-- ported rigidly or is subject to very slight vibration. The under guide 38 may also be formed on the free end of a round bar 39 similarto the bar 22, which bar 39 is'adjustably mounted in an oscillating block 40- held on a bracket 4L1 carried by the carriage 1. This bracket may be adjustable as in the case of the bracket 25.

In the Defiance or other lathe to which thi invention may be applicable, the cutters will operate simultaneously and uniformly upon the parts of the sticks 3 at which the steady rests 5 and 6 and the guides 16 and 38- are applied, and said rests and guides will therefore constantly be in contact with, respectively, the sides and under parts of the stick 3.
During the turning of the stlck the work holders 5 and 6, which engage at the weakest point, effectually prevent the vibration of such stick in either direction, and prevent the escape of the stick from the effective action of the cutters 2. In combination with awood working lathe having a vibrating carriage, of a steady rest including a side work holder, a movable arm adapted to carry said side work holder yieldingly into contact with a weak portion of the work, a stop adapted to strike and shift said arm and work holder when the carriage is moved in one direction whereby to withdraw the work holder from the work, guide means in connection with a similarly turned part of the work at a point thereon where the vibration of the work is relatively small, said guide means being connected to control the movements of said arm and side work holder, an under work holder, means supported by said carriage for holding the under work holder yieldingly beneath said work at a point thereon close to said side work holder, means arranged between said arm and last named means? whereby the under work holder may be withdrawn from the work when the carriage is shifted, under guide,
from engagement with the work, an under work holder, an oscillating support mounted on the carriage for carrying said under work holder, an adjustable finger on said oscillating support adapted to be engaged by one end of said weighted arm whereby to depress the support and under work holder, adjustable yielding means connected to said oscillating support and adapted to bring the under work holder into contact with the work, a stop for said oscillating support, side and under guides mounted in connection with similarly turned parts of the work near where the work is supported, and means for connecting said side and under guides, respectively, to said side and under work holders whereby the same may be made to operate in unison, substantially as described.
