Be it known that I, EDWIN S; CARMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Cleveland, county of Guyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mold-Jarring Mechanism, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.- 1
The present improvements, relatingas i11- dicated to mold jarring mechanism, have special regard to the provision of means adapted for electrical actuation for jarring molds in mold-making machines; but it will be understood that some of the features involved are adapted fornse in such machines, irrespective of the particular source of power. Such jarring mechanism, moreever, is herein shown as combined with a pal ticular type of molding machine known as a roll-over jolt machine, and certain inodifi= cations and arrangements are peculiar to such combined use.
Where, as in the complete machine thus illustrated, electricity is used to actuate the jolt mechanism, it simplifies and unifies the construction to use the same source of power, that is electricity, for operating the roll over mechanism, also.
The object of the present invention, accordingly,is to provide arollover jolt machine wherein electricity may be advantageously and economically used to operate the entire machine, both to preliminarily jolt,or jar, the table which supports the mold, and to subsequently roll such mold over. To the accomplishment of the are, going and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularlypointed out in the claims. p
The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanisni embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.

Save as modified to permit the use of electric power, the general constructional features of the present machine are similar to those of the mechanism for making molds, which forms thesubject matter of my pending application, Serial No. 801,127, filed November 15, 1913. In other words, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, said machine is designed to be set in a pit 1, or at least below the-fioor line 2, onwhichf the operators work, so that the roll-over table, or pattern plate carrier 3, in its lower position will be located only a short distance above the floor line, thusbringing a flask 4, when the same is secured thereon as shown in Fig. 3, in conveniently accessible position fer filling with sand and for doing such tamping as may be found necessary. This roll over table, which forms the central element of the machine, is, along withother Various operative parts, supported on two end frames or standards 5, one at each end, that are in turn firmly secured to a bed plate 6 constituting the anvil ofthe jarring mechanism, as well. On the latter is also centrally mounted a tubular support in the form of a cylinder 7, in which is reciprocably fitted a tubular extension 8 that carrise the jolting or jarring table 9. A housing 10, extending laterally from the side of said support, sustains and incloses the actuating mechanism forsuch table, as will be presently more fully described. being designed, when in this position, to receive a mold-box or flask and to have the latter filled with sand, said platform and thus the table and flask, being jarred as occasion required by the aforesaid actuating mechanism so as to pack the sand around the pattern and pattern plate 60, whiclr is directly secured to the face of the roll-over table.
For operative purposes, other than such jarring, this table is supported by means of trunnions' 11 extending in opposite directions from sideplates 12, that form part of the table structure, so as to lie in recesses 13 formed in the upper ends of two plungers 14 vertically reciprocable' in guides 15 formed in the respective end standards. These recesses are in effect vertically extending slots of a length sufficient to permit the free up and down movement of the table,]in the arring operation just referred to, without the trunnions contacting with Upon the plungers, however, being raised the trimnions are engaged by the bottoms of the recesses, and the table thus lifted bodily to an elevation sufiieient to permit of the rolling-over thereof in order to invert the pattern and attached flask, or mold box.
.Actuation of the plungers thus to elevate the roll-over table, is secured from a rock shaft extending transversely of the machine in front of the standards and provided with two arms 21, one at each end, that are respectively connected by links 22 to the adjacent plungers. I
The rolling-over of the table is designed to be automatically effected, incidentally to the raising of the latter by reason of the rock shaft and its connections, two flexible members 25 being provided with this in view, one end of each of which is secured to an annular member in the form of a sheave 26 on one of the trunnions 11, and the other end. of which is attached to the adjacent standard 5, having a limited lost motion as the table is raised, so as not to interfere with the arring operation, but eventually becoming fixed, whereby the table is rolled-over, if raised sufliciently high. A locking pin 27, normally operated inwardly by a compression spring 28, but adapted to be withdrawn by means .of a hand wheel 29, is provided to retain the table in its rolled-over position, so that it may be lowered after thus being rolled-over and yet be retained inverted.
A self-equalizing flask carrier 30, mounted 011. a car or truck 31 is also provided, such carrier being movable on rails 32 into and out of position under the table when thus inverted, and being adapted upon lowering of the inverted table to receive the mold box or flask 4, which is, of course, likewise inverted. Uponthefiask being detached from the table, the latter may be again raised sufiiciently to clear the pattern and the carrier moved away with the finished mold. Thereupon the locking plunger 27 is released, and the table restored to its normal position ready to receive another flas The jarring, or jolting mechanism, provided in connection with the jarring table, as clearly shown in Figs. 3, 3 and 3, C011)- prises a bell crank 35 pivotally hung to one side of the tubular support 7, as at 36, and having its inner arm suitably pivotally connected to the tubular extension 8 of the jolting table, as by means of a slide-block 37 capable of reciproeable movement across the face of the extension 8, the extension, as before stated, being reciprocably fitted in such support 7. The other arm of said bellerank is connected by means of two links 38 of special construction (see Fig. 3") with two cranks 39 that form part of a crankshaft 40 disposed at substantially right angles to the shaft- 20 for actuating the plungers 14, such cranks being disposed approximately 180 degrees apart. Each crank it will be observed, has a lost motion connection with one of the links 38, being our naled in an elongated opening 41 formed between the one end of the link, and a block 42 slidably held therein. A compression spring 43 interposed between said block and the other end of the link, serves to take up the shock or jar which might otherwise be imposed on the crank, solid buffers 44, 44 on the block and link end, which finally contact, being adapted to receive the full, load.
As a result of the foregoing construction it will be obvious that rotation of the crankshaft 40 will serve to oscillate the bellcrank 35, so as to alternately raise the table support and allow it to drop, the angular location of the bell-crank relatively to the two cranks on the crank-shaft giving a long travel in the raising operation, and a short travel for the drop; in other words, despite a slow upward movement, a rapid drop is secured under gravity and without its move ment being restrained at all by the operating mechanism.
mile the foregoing jolting or jarring mechanism is not necessarily limited to use with an electric drive, it is, by reason of the operative characteristics just pointed out, peculiarly adapted for use, and I accordingly preferably provide an electric motor 45, for rotating the crank-shaft 40, and at the same time utilize a second electric motor 46 to oscillate the rock-shaft 20 which raises and lowers the plungers 14. These two motors, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, are conveniently set together in a pit 47 adjacent that in which the molding machine is set, the shaft 40 being extended into such pit and there carrying a gear 48 of relatively large diameter, whereivith meshes a pinion 49 on the armature shaft of thefniotor.. A similar large gear driven from the armature shaft or the other meter, carries a crank 51, having the necessary throtv, which is in turn connected by means. of a link 52 with a crank or lever-aif'm 53 oh one end of said rock-shaft, as will be readily understood.
The foregoing arrangement and disposition of the motors permits oftlie control of the entire operation of the machine, both the perliminary jarring of the mold and the rolling-over of said mold, from any cenvenient station, and has the advantage that the rate of movement may be very nicely regulated, not only in the jarringoperation, but in the rolling-over, to suit the size and character of the particular job being handled. Itmight be further eaplaiaedyhowever, that the present arrangement s superior to the familiar cam, or toggle, frequently employed as the actuating ineahs for it jarring table of the kind in hand, not only because the bearing surfacesof the movihg parts may be made of adeqtiate size', but also because, by reason of the two cranks 39, angularly disposed described, the table or support is picked up on the rebound. With such cam, or toggle, theloadthat can be handled is limited on assett oflthe relatively small bearing surface, especially in the case of the cam, and this explains the hitherto quite universal useof the soacall'ed air 10h, Wherever a heavy load was m volved. By the present construction and arrangement of the two cranks in combination With the bell-crank, moreover, a long travel in raising the support is secured, and a short travel for dropping it; also the load is picked up on the rebound, thus avoiding the harmful effect, when this is not done, such as disturbing the sand already packed about the mold.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, I shoW a single motor 55 arranged to operate both the jolt-mechanism and the roll-over mechanism; in other Words, such single motor is adapted to drive either gear 48 or gear 50, as desired. To this end, a clutch 56 is provided on the shaft 57 of said motor, such clutch being adapted to connect said shaft either With a pinion 58 inter-geared With said first'named gear, or a pinion 59 inter-geared With the second gear.
