To all whom it may concern:
.Ucitizen of the United States of America, ""residingjat Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Metallic Ties and Rail- Fasteners, of which the following is a specification. p 7 p I The primary object of the invention is the provision of a metallic tie upon which rails may be readily secured. and resiliently seated for absorbing shocks and jars incident to the varying traffic conditions.
A further object of the invention is to provide a metallic tie upon which railway rails are resiliently seated at a proper distance apart for the gage of the railroad and with the ties uniformly spaced apart.
With these general objects in view, the invention will be fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

Figure 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view through a railway line illustrating the rails positioned upon a tie of my invention with the tie broken away.

My invention provides a metal tie having a main body portion 10 rectangular in cross section with its opposite ends formed alike but opposite in arrangement and including a transverse head 11 at each end of the tie of substantially the same cross sectional area as the rail body 10.
A block 12 is provided at each end of the tie slightly inwardly of the heads 11 adapted for engagement with the outer face of the web 13 of an adj acently positioned rail when operatively mounted upon the tie. The end portions of the tie body 10 are longitudinally channeled as at 14 providing parallel side walls 15 while each channel 14 extends into Application filed December 27, 1918. Serial No. 268,481.

This arrangement permits the mum to seat wlth its base 20 upon the bolts 22 providing ner, two rails 21 are operatively positioned upon the tie body 10 accurately spaced apart for the gage of the road by having the blocks 20 properly arranged upon the body 10. A slight resiliency of the rail seating renders the metallic tie more efficient and long lived while the rails are readily secured thereto and removed therefrom at will.
The heads 11 at the opposite ends of the tie which is substantially H-shaped are adapted to have their ends 28 positioned in abutting relations so that a continuous base is provided at the opposite sides of the track serviceable in stabilizing the ties when mounted upon the roadbed. The heads 11 also furnish a suitable mounting means for third rails accurately spacing the same outwardly of the rails 21 The heads 11 may be secured together if desired and employed as a walk for the trackmen when conditions warrant such a use thereof.
WVhat I claim as new is 1. A metallic tie havin a body rectangular in cross section provlded with a longitudinal channel in the upper face thereof, a cross head at the end of the body having passages therethrough communicating with said channel, a block upon said body adjacent the head, a clamp having a portion slidably positioned in said channel adapted for movement toward and away from said block, and resilient bolts extending through said clamp and passages removably secured to the tie body.
