Be it known that I, BERNT S'rnNsnUn, a subject of the King of Norway, residingat Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia new and usefullmprovements in Brushes, of which the following. isfa specification.
An object of the inventionisl to provide a brush for cleaning purposes. x l
The invention comprehends among other features, the provision of a brush which mayi be adapted to various purposes, but whichiis particularly adapted for use in cleaning automobiles, as to the body, wheels, and otherparts thereof,and to ,this end the brush is of a fountain nature, whereby the bristle part thereof can be saturated with water, or
some other cleaning uid, during the brush l ing operation to loosen any foreign elements, or the brush may be used in the nature of a nozzle to direct a steady strong stream of water or other cleaning fluid, against the part to be cleaned in order to loosen the foreign elements, so that the brush will readily brush them away, or remove the foreign elements after the fluid has loosened the same.
In the further disclosure of the invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken through the brush.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1.

Referring more particularly to the views, the numeral 10 indicates a tubular body or stem, having a suitable threaded portion 11 for a coupling 12 of a hose 13. The body or stem 10 is enlarged at 14 to provide a bristle portion in which a series of bristles 15 are disposed, said enlarged body portion 14 having a series of ducts 16 from a central channel or canal 17 extending entirely through the body, whereby to supply water to the bristles 15. At the free end of the brush body and disposed in the canal or conduit 17 is a suitable spring-actuated Valve 18 forming a part of a nozzle 19 of the brush body, and which is formed by cutting an enlarged opening 20 into the end of the brush body to communi- ,cate with the canal 17. The cord or wire 2On passes through a tube 24 where it extends from the interior of `the body to the exterior thereof, and kthe tube is provided with a suitable packing 25 and )amnut 26. It will be clear that when the collar is slid downwardly or rearwardly on the tubular stem, the valve 18 will be opened, and when the collar is released the spring action of the valve will close the same.
The central channel or canal 17 is in fact formed by a tubular stem 27 which passes entirely through the tubular body 10, and around which the body 10 can be tuined. It will be seen that the ducts 16 normally register with ducts 1Ga in the stein 27, and that when the body 1() is turned around the stein, the ducts 16 and 16a will be moved out of register, thus closing the ducts 16 so that water or fluid passing through the hose can be directed out through the nozzle end, instead of coming out through the bristles of the brush. This turning movement is limited by having a screw 28 extending through an opening 29 in the tubular body and connected to the inner stem 27, said opening 29 being more in the nature of a slot, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the turning of the tubular body 10 on the stem 27 will be limited in either direction.
In Fig. 4 I disclose a modified form of my invention, and in which the outer end of the tubular body 10n is formed with a flared head 30 and a nozzle element 31 is threaded into the head, the valve being of course indicated by the numeral 18. With this arrangement, difl'erent forms of nozzle elements 31, of' different diameters and sizes,

I claim:
1. A brush comprising a tubularl body, a conduit arrangedwithin the body and in open communication With the source of sup,-
ply, said body being formed with ducts, and
the .conduit being formed with openings adapted to register with said ducts in certain positionv of theconduitand body, a discharge nozzle arranged 1n one end of the conduit and opening vthrough an end of the body, al valve operable in the conduit and adapted to close saidv discharge nozzle, and means mounted on the body and connected with said valve whereby the valve may be operated at will.
