Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs C. FRENCH, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Kenosha, Kenosha county, Wisconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Mixing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to mixing machines of that kind in which the rotary receptacle is provided with an opening forboth receiving the materials and discharging the batch after the mixing operation is completed. In a mixing machine of this general character, the said receptacle is usually mounted to be tilted into one position for receiving the materials and for rotation in this position to produce the mixture, and the said receptacle is also capable of tilting movement in the other direction to bring the said opening into position for discharging the batch. Ordinarily, the said receptacle or tub-like container is annular in character, and is arranged to tilt about a horizontal axis which is coincident, or approximately so, with the axis of rotation of the receptacle.
An object of my invention is to provide a mixing machine of this kind in which the said receptacle approximates a cube to a certain extent, or is semi-cubical in form, thereby increasin the efficiency of the machine.
Another 0 ject of the invention is to provide an improved construction and arrangement whereby the receptacle tilts about an offset axis to bring the opening thereof into a low position for charging the receptacle, thereby facilitating the introduction of the materials into the receptacle, and into a relatively high position for discharging the batch, as will hereafter more fully appear.
It is also an object to provide certa n details and features of construction tending to increase the general efliciency and serviceability of a mixing machine of this particular character.
To the foregoing and other useful ends my invention consists in matters hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying draWings- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a mixing machine embodying the principles of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan of the machine shown in Fig. 1, showing the forward portion thereof broken away for convenience of illustration.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation ofthe said machine.
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the bottom of the receptacle.
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the receptacle.
As thus illustrated, my invention comprises a body A, and as the machine is designed for use on the street, and to be moved from place to place, the said body is preferably provided with front and rear wheels a'and B of any suitable character. The upright frames C and D are suitably mounted on the said body, and arranged to support between them the swinging frame E, the latter being provided with trunnions e carried at the upper ends of said upright frames. The rotary receptacle F is of any suitable or known shape, cubiform or semicubiform, as shown, and is provided in the flat bottom thereof with a fixed cylindric member or stem which extends through the supporting frame E and is'provided at its lower end with a reduced portion having a retaining nut G, a ball-bearing 9 being arranged on top of the frame E to support the said receptacle, and the said member or stem f forming the axis of said bearing, whereby the receptacle is adapted to rotate about a central axis. For this purpose one of the trunnions e is provided with a short shaft H extending centrally thereof, said shaft having a bevel gear 7:. for engaging the bevel gear ring I which is'secured to and encircles the said receptacle. A sprocket connection J connects the outer end of this shaft with the engine K, these elements being of any suitable or desired character. The receptacle has a round top opening F which serves as both a charging opening and a discharge outlet. iVith this arrangement the said receptacle is driven by the engine during the mixing operation.
In order that the said receptacle or tublike container F may efficiently mix the materials, the form or construction thereof is as follows: Starting with a cube, three adjacent sides thereof 1, 2 and 3 form the lower sides of the receptacle. that the latter is in low position for loading. Also, this brings the mouth of the receptacle into a suitably elevated position for discharging the batch. By reason of the'ofiset axi'sthat is to say, the horizontal axis aboutwhich the receptacle tilts, the weight of the receptacle tends to make it gravitate in one direction only, when in a horizontal or upright position, as the weight is considerabl greater at one side than at the other. in I axis of tilting motion is located some distance from the upright axis about which the receptacle rotates, so that the two axes do not intersect each other. Thus, the said horizontal, axis of-tilting motion is not only some distance above the: bottom of the receptacle, as well as some distance below the top of the receptacle, but is also located'at some distance from the center of the recep tacle, bein'gmuchnearer one sideofthe receptacle than the other. With the construction shown and'gdescribed, it will be seen I that the horizontal axis of the bail-shaped frame E and the vertical axis of the recep-' tacle-F are not in the same vertical plane, when the receptacle is horizontal, but are in different vertical planes and spaced apart a distance sufficient to unbalance, the recep tacle, in the manner explained.
