Description

E. FREE-MAN.
-Roller fer Spinning.
Patented Sep.17, 1872.
Tp No. 131,432'.
UNITED STATES PATENT @Enron EDWIN FREEMAN, OF NORTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO CORK AND LEATHER TOP ROLL COMPANY, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOP-ROLLERS FOR SPINNING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,432, dated September 17, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN FREEMAN, of Norton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Top-Roller, for Spinning.
My invention consists in a novel covering `for top-rolls to be used either as an exterior drawing-surface or as a foundation for the leather covering ordinarily applied, composed of granulated wood, the particles of which are united with a suitable adhesive substance, and which may either be applied in sheets to the roll or molded thereon; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawing furnished and forming apart of the same,is a clear and true description of rolls embodying my invention, and a desirable method of making the same.
Figure 1 represents, in perspective, one ,of my improved top-rollers provided with a leather covering. Fig. 2 represents the same in cross-section, and Fig; 3 represents one of my improved top-rollers provided wholly with the' compoundcork covering.
It is to be understood that my roll in its general structure, does not differ from rolls lon gin use. I use the same metallic shell, and, when covered with leather on a foundation composed of the granulated-wood compound, its appearance differs only from other leathercovered rolls in common use in having exposed at each end, in section, the layer ofthe woody compound. The said compound is preferably composed of granulated cork-wood or corkdust, the particles of which are united into a comparatively solid but elastic mass by any suitable Vadhesive matter.
In practice it is found that, say, twenty pounds of granulated cork-wood soaked in bisulphide of carbon and combined with five pounds of virgin caoutchouc, rendered fluid by the same solvent, (the latter being applied in sufficient quantity to the mass to render it sufciently plastic,) will produce a compound well suited for the purpose. It should be evenly spread, while soft, upon any suitable lightwoven textile fabric of ilax or cotton, and,-
while drying, subjected tosucient pressure to secure proper solidity. After having been so prepared the cork compound77 is cut into strips and wound squarely upon the metallic surface of the roller, and secured thereto with any ofthe wellknown adhesive cements which have for many years been used in the art of covering rolls with leather. There are many of' the numerous well-known solvents for caoutchouc which would undoubtedly serve as good a purpose as the bisulphide of carbon; but that is known to be a desirable solvent in this connection. It has not been deemed essential to combine with the caoutchouc the mineral matter usually employed in the' process of vulcanization; if the gum should be vulcanized, however, it would not necessarily affect the practical value of the compound. Some of the lighter woods-as, for instance, poplar and white pineT-can also be employed with approx imate results, but the cork-wood is much to be preferred to any known to me, and is as cheap as any other, as the refuse of' bottle-cork establishments can be procured in 4desirable quantities at low cost. Among the several varieties of the article known as Kamptulicon or cork carpet (an larticle of English manufacture) there are several kinds well suited to the purpose, and they can be obtained at a cost so low as to render it unnecessary even to manufacture the compound expressly for the purpose of roll-covering. I am, however, unable to designate by any special term the particular kinds of Kamptulicon 7 so suited, or to so describe them that they can readily be distinguished by their appearance from others which are not so well adapted to the use. In molding the compound upon the roll it is necessary to have a mold made in section, with which the desired degree of pressure can be attained. To secure proper unity between the compound to be molded and the metal, a wrapper of twine saturated in the solvent is first applied. Whether molded or applied in the sheet form it is desirable always to put the roll thus covered into a lathe and to grind oft' the covering to a uniform thickness, whether said covering is to be employed as an exterior drawing surface, or as a foundation for the usual leather clothing.
Cork-wood, in sliced sheets, has hitherto been employed with good results, both as an exterior covering and as a foundation for leather; but as the cork-wood so used is necessarily of 'the natural cork-Wood can possibly be.
Having thus described my invention, I claim vas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a top-roller for spinning, the covering of which is composed wholly or in partof a layer or layers of a compound of adhesive gums and granulated cork or other suitable Woody matter, substantially-as described.
EDWIN FREEMAN.
