ALBERT J. ENSTENESS, 0F TERRY, MONTANA, ASSIGNOR OF ON'E-HALF TO SYDNEY W. LOOMIS, 0F SIOUX FALLS, SOUTH DAKOTA.
TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented An". 26, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT J. ENSTENESS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Terry, in the county of Prairie, State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to stretching devices, and has particular reference to implements for stretching or drawing wires or tapes.
The object of the invention is to provide an eflicient tool for stretching or drawing the wires or tapes by means of which electric conductors are fished through conduits.
In order to provide such a stretching tool which will be practical, it is necessary to first clamp the tape or wire and then to draw the clamping element as far as is possible and then to move the clamping element or head up for a new gri In my improved device, I have assemb ed an implement which may be supported between the ends of conduits which are to be led into an outlet box, or which may be supported in the outlet box proper, a clamp device, and a movable element supporting the clamp device so that the continuous movement of the latter in one direction will primarily clamp the tape and then draw it forward.
With the above objects in View, and such others relating to the details of construction as may hereinafter appear, my invention will now be fully set forth and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of the device,
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the device in open and extended position,
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the device in clamping position but at the beginning of a drawing stroke,
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through the device,
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a portion of the device, and
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the detachable end member.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents a tubular stem, which is externally threaded at one end, and re ceives thereon the attaching block 3 at the base of the tubular stem 2. Telescopically carried within the tube 1 is another tube 4, which is locked to the tube 1 against rotation thereon by means of a key or lug 5 extending inwardly from the inner wall of the tube 1 and engaging a longitudinal slot 6which is formed in the wall of the tube 4, and determines the extent of longitudinal movement of the latter upon the tube 1. It should be noted that the tubes 1 and 4 and the stem 2 form a continuous conduit which is extensible for the length of the slot 6.
Secured on the free end of the tube 4 is a comparatively heavy bar 7 extending longitudinally from the tube 4, and having one face including or lying close to the axis of the tube 4. Said face of the bar 7 forms one jaw of a clamp, whose companion jaw is formed by a short block 8. The block 8 is connected to the bar 7 by means of the links 9 and 10, which permit the approach and separation of the jaws. The links 10 are extended beyond the jaw 7 in a pair of lever arms between which one end of a link 11 is pivoted.
The opposite end of the link 11 is pivotally mounted upon a bolt 12 which joins the ends of a split ring 13 which surrounds and is secured to the forward end of a ferrule 14 which is slidable upon the tube 4 ad jacent the tubular stem 1. Mounted upon the tubular stem 1 is a hand grip 15, whose forward end surrounds the ferrule 14 and the split ring 13. When the grip 15 is reciprocated with respect to the tube 4, it carries the split ring with it and through the medium of the bar 11 and link 10, correspondingly moves the block 8 that forms one of the gripping jaws.
As above stated, the tubes 1 and 4 may telescope one within the other, and in order to permit the complete telescoping of the tubes, the rear end of the hand grip 15 is bored out to a sufficient diameter to permit the entrance of the tube 1. Fig. 2 of the drawings shows the device in open position, both as to the clamping head and the extension of the tubes. When the device is to be used, the stem 2, whose curvature and taper lines permit it to be wed ed into the end of a conduit or into an out et box, is suitably positioned in line with a conduit through which a wire or tape is to be drawn. Then,
