Be it, known that I, EDWARD H. Pier., a citizen of the United States of America, residing at St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Forms for Building-Blocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a `full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to forms for use in making building blocks from cementitious materials which may be placed in the form in a fluid state, the same setting and hardening quickly so that the blocks made in the form may be removed for 'further use. It is an Object and purpose of the present invention to make a form which is very quickly and easily operable both for fixing its parts in position for the reception of the cementitious material, and for disconnecting said parts for removal of the blocks made therein. To this end the invention consists of many novel features of construction and arrangements of parts, as willappear and be understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,

Like reference characters refer to like parts in the different views of the drawings.
In construction, the form includes a bottom member 1 which may be provided with wheels 2 adapted to run on suitable tracks so that the forni may be moved from one pla-ce to another. The upper side 3 ot' the member 1 is a smooth horizontal surface. From each side oi the member 1 a bracket f1 of the form shown projects, the upper sides of which lie in the same plane with the upper surface 3 of the member 1. These brackets are located toward the rear side of the form. At and above the front side of 'the form a horizontal bar 5 is located which is .integrally connected to the bottom niember 1 by vertical ends (3 and spaced vertical posts 7 which are located at the lront ot" the bar 5 leaving a space between the rear portion of the bar and the bottom mem- A number of partitions and sides S are used to provide the side members tor the individual blocks made in the form. Each partition 8 is of a length equal to the length of the block to be made and at one end has a bar 9 of metal attached thereto and positioned at right angles to the length of the partition. Each bar 9 is of a width equal to the thickness of a block to be made and of a length such that it passes between the under side of bar 5 and the upper side of the front end of the bottom member 1, all of the bars 9 heilig pivotally connected, as indicated at 10 so as to turn about a vertical axis. The pivots are at the 'fi-'ee edges olf the bars 9. It will be noted that with this construction, all of the partitions S may be swung outwardly over the brackets l, and the connection of about one half of the members 8 to the bars 9 is such that such half of the members swing in one direction and the remaining half in the opposite direction. -When the members 8 are located in position as shown in Fig. 1, the blocks 9 close the front end spaces between the partitions except at one point adjacent the middle of the form at ythe front side thereof, a fixed vertical bar 9, indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 being supplied for this purpose.
At the opposite end of each partition S a tongue l1 projects, its outer end being thinned to an edge as indicated at 12. These tongues are located at the upper parts of the partitions and are ot progressively increasing lengths on the diii'erent partitions from the outer ones inwardly toward the center one. The bars 9 and the fixed bar 9 are formed with a plurality of holes 13 therethrough, one over the other and lined with a Babbitt metal 14 which `furnishes a bearing for cores mounted for rotary movement and used with the Jform which will be described in a later application for patent to be tiled by me, these cores being passed lengthwise ot' the spaces bounded by the partitions 'lor the purpose ot' lightening the weight and lessening the material used in making the blocks.
At the rear end of the bottom or table member 1. an end closing gate 15 is hingeach tongue 1-1, into which the tongues in'-v sert when the gate is moved to upper position. At each upper corner of the gate a notch 18 is cut and a lever 19 is pivot-ally connected at one end to each of the outer members 8, having a handle 20 fixed at the other end and provided with a hook 21 which is adapted to come back of the gate at such notches 1S, thereby holding the gate in upper position. At the front of the bottom member 1 downwardly projecting` bars 92 are fixed for use in connection with the core machine heretofore mentioned, and a plurality of openings Q3 are made through the gate 15 linto which the ends of the lcores insert when vthe form 4has ybeen drawn on to the same.
1n operation with the Aparts in position as shown in Figs. 1 and 3,.the form Iis ready to receive comentitious material, the cores having been inserted' through openings 13 and 23. The material in fluid state is entered yinto the form inany 'desired'manner 'and the form completely filled.J It is then allowed to set and harden, this occurring very quickly, particularly with plaster of Paris compositions, after which 'the cores are removed and the levers 19 raised to free the gate which is turned to lower position. The sides 8 are then turned about their pivotal axes at 10 so that they move over the brackets 4; thenfin succession the intermediate partitions S are likewise swung outwardly, the dill'erent blocks kheilig removed Las the process -continues It will be noted that when the side Sis moved outwardly, the block between it and the first partition 8 is freed for access and may be readily removed, particularly if the partition is first moved slightly outward and then back to or toward its operative position. The blocks are removed from opposite sides of the `forni until the middle onesare reached, and after the'last one is removed, all ofthe sides and partitions 8 are swungl back, Athe end 'gate 15 turned to upper position and secured by the hooks 21, and the form is ready to receive another quantity of material for the repetition of the process.
This form isvery easily worked and with a minimum of expenditure of time and labor. The'blocks are removed from the form quite as easily as though the form was completely disassembled. All kinds of cementitious material may be used and it is adapted to make solid blocks, the only difference being that the openings at 18 and 23 will not appear and no cores will be used. The rapidity with which' the form may be set up in position to receive the cementitious material,
Aand the like rapidity with which it may be worked for removal of the blocks are features of particular merit in the invention. ln practice, this form has demonstrated its time and labor saving qualities, and its practical advantages.
I claim: 1. A form for making blocks of cementitious material comprising a bottom member *having aflat upper surface, a plurality of vertical partitions and side members located above and across the bottom -member in spaced relation, a vertical bar attachedy to the front end of each partition and side member, lmeans for pivotally mounting said bars at the front ofthe bottom member to y turn about a vertical axis, a gatefadapted to connect withthe opposite ends 'of all ofthe vpartition and side members, said gate being hingedly'co'nnected to the rearof theibottom member, and means to detachably hold `the the front ends and to one side of the partition and side membersfsaid-membersbeingk spaced apartand parallelto each other 1n normal operative position, and means for closing the spaces between the front and rear ends of said lpartitionand side members-of the form, substantially as described.
3. A form for luse yinmaking blocks of cementitious material comprising a bottom or table member having a flat upper surface, a bracket extending from said member at each end thereof, and having its upper surface in the same Yplane with the upper surface of the bottom 1member,\a plurality of side `and partition members located vertically and transversely ofthe bottom member and normally spaced apart and parallel to each other, a vertical vbar connected to the front end of each ofsaid partition. and side members and positioned at right angles thereto, 'means for pivotally mounting said bars to turn about vertical-axes whereby the partition and side members attached thereto may be swungoutwardfover=the brackets, means for detachably engaging ywith ysaid partition'and side members'to hold .them in parallel' relation to each other, said means also closing the'spaces betweenthe vends of said members, and :means for releasably holding said first mentioned `means in position, substantially as described. i

5. A form for use in making blocks of cementitious material comprising a bottom member having a flat upper surface, a plurality of vertical side and partition members pivotally connected adjacent their front ends to swingloack and forth over the bottom member, means normally closing the spa-ces between the side and partition members when the same are swung toward each other and all located above the bottom member, a projectingtongue on the rear end of each of the side and partition members, a gate hingedly connected at its bottom edge to the rear edge of the bottom member and formed with a plurality of slots in which said tongues insert when the gate is turned to upper position, and means mounted on the side members to connect with the gate and hold it in upper position, said means being operable to release the gate when desired, substantially as described.
6. A form for use in making blocks of cementitious material comprising a bottom member having a flat upper surface, partition and side members pivotally connected at one end to said bottom member to swing about vertical axes, means attached to the front end of each partition and side member for closing the spaces between the said members at their front ends when they are moved toward each other, means connected to the bottom member at its rear end to enlrage with the rear ends of said partition and side members and maintain them in fixed relation to each other, said means also closing the spaces between the rear ends of said partition and side members. and releasable means for holding said rear end closing means in fixed position with respect to the partition and side members, substantially as described.
7. A form for use in making blocks of cementitious material comprisinga bottom member having a horizontal upper surface, a horizontal bar located above the front side of the bottom member, a plurality of ends and spaced apart vertical posts connecting the bar to the bottom member, a vertical bar disposed between the horizontal bar and bottom member adjacent the middle of said horizontal bar and located between two oi the osts, a plurality of vertical bars located between the other posts and ends and mounted to turn about vertical axes located adjacent one edge oi.' each vertical bar, a vertical plate attached at the other edge of cach pivotally mounted vertical bar, the plates at one side oi the fixed vertical bar being adapted to be swung outward in one direction and the plates at the opposite side thereofl being adapted to swing in the other direction, a gate hingedly connected at the rear side of the bottom member means on the plates for engaging with the gate to hold the plates against turning movement when the gate is in upper position, and means for releasably holding the gate in xed position relative to the plates, substantially as described.

A construction containing the elements in combination defined in claim 7, each of the said vertical bars, both fixed and pivotally mounted having a plurality oi' openings therethrough, and said gate having a plurality of openings therethrough equal to the total number of openings in said vertical bars and disposed to aline therewith whereby a plurality of cores may be passed through the openings lengthwise of and between said plates.
9. In combination, a bottom member, a plurality of vertical plates located above and across the bottom member and adapted to be placed in parallel relation to each other and spaced apart, means for pivotally mounting the plates at their front ends to turn about vertical axes, certain of the plates being adapted to swing outward in one direction and the others outward in the opposite direction, means closing the spaces between the plates at the front ends thereo'l, a gate hinged to the bottom member at its rear side and adapted to swing upwardly to engage with the plates at their rear ends and close the spaces between them, a lever pivotally connected to each of the outer plates, and a hook at the free end of each of said levers adapted te engage with the gate when it is in upper position and hold it in such position.
10. In combination, a support having a flat upper surface, vertical plates hingedly mounted to turn about vertical axes located on the support in parallel spaced apart rclation, means Jfor closing the spacesl at the front ends between the plates, means 'for engaging with the rear ends ot the plates and also close the spaces between them at such ends, and lateral extensions to the support over which the plates may swing outwardly, substantially as described.
