To all rwhom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER R. ScHLAeE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkele in the county of Alameda and State o California, have invented new andV useful Improvements in Door-Locks, of which the following is a specification. f
This invention relates to a door lock.
One of the objects of the present invention. is to provide a simple, substantial, cheaply manufactured, easily applied locking mechanism operated'by thedoor knob whereby the latch in aj door lock ,may be locked against movement when extended. Anotherl object of the invention is to lock the knob, the spindle and the hub against turningI movement and the latch against de-4 pression by a jimmy and also to provide means. for lvisibly indicating `whether or not the door is locked. Further objects will hereinafter appear.

Mounted'below the latch plate are a pair of flat springs 15 and 16. These springs are secured at their forward ends by means of screws 17 upon a pad 18 formed within the casmg and their upper faces are such that they will form a' guide' and support for the latch p1ate,'which will permit the latch plate to move back over the stop 14, the upward movement of the springs 15 and 16 being limited by a shoulder lug v19 positioned adjacent or just above the stop 14. In other words, the springs 15 and 16 normally 11e on 'a plane flush with the top surface of the stop 14 and in said position form a' guide and support for the latch plate 4.
Rigidlysecured in the usual manner on the outside end of the spindle 4 is a door knob 20 and pivotally securedwas at 21, on the inside end of the spindle is a door knob 22. Formed on the inner end of the' door knob is a sphere-shaped extension 23 and forr'ned on the inner face of said sphere-v shaped projection is a semi-circular notch 24 whichis *adapted to receive one end of a link 25. This link is in reality yinterposed between the hu'b 6 and the 'sphere-shaped extension 23 on the inner door knob and is held in this position entirely by the notches 26 and 24 and the s rings 15 and 16 which,

The hub is therefore slidably mounted on the spindle and as such permits the knob 22 v27 (see Fig. 2). This brings the rear shoul 'ders 7 of the latch plate into the plane of the stop 14, or, inother words, to a position where the latch plate cannot ride over the stop. The latch and plate 4 therefore become locked against endwise movement as' the shoulder 7 will engage the front ends 28 of the stop 14. The hub and spindle, to-
gether with both of the knobs, are simultaneously locked against turningmovementI as c the hub cannot swing or turn when vthe latch plate 4 is locked against movement.
The latch 3 is in this manner llocked vby means of the inside knob 22 and the knobs are in turn locked against turning movement, thuseliminating .the necessity of inserting a key and operating the main bolt 9 or lock of the door.
The lock is particularly adapted for bathrooms, bed-rooms and the like and the Apivotally connected knob is, of course, positioned only on the interior side.. A modification of the lock is shown -in Fig. 4. This lock is known as the easy-latch, thatis, thelatch shown in'Fig. 1 is normally held in )the extended position by means of the spring 12. In Fig. `4 a double latch plate' has been provided. The spring 12 will here only-engage the lower'latch Y plate, which is retracted or--extended by means of the ,hub knobs, V`kwhile the upper latch plate, indicated at 30, is' slidably mounted independent' of the lower.v latch y plate, thus permitting the latch to be held in its extended position by means of a weaker spring 31.* .The two latch platesare in this' instance supported on a plane'with relation tothe stop 14 by means of springs .-15 a'nd'l` in a manner similar to that previously describedand are 'depressed to engage the stop 14 by means of the pivotal mounting of'the knob and the interposed link 25.. Having thus particularly described my invention, what I elaim'and desire to secure by Letters Patent is :v
1. The'combination with the latch in a lock and the -spindle whereby'it is actuated of a knob pivotally mounted on the spindle and means operated by swinging movement ofthe knob about its pivot for locking the latch against movement.'

In a door lock the combination with a latcl: and latch plate slidably mounted in the casing 'of the lock of a spindle turnably mounted 1n the casing, a stop member over which the latch plate is normally adapted to slide, a yielding member adapted to support the latch plate, a hub member slidably mounted on the'spindle, a door knob pivotally mounted on the spindle and a connecting member between the knob and the hub adapted to move the hub lengthwise upon the spindle when the knob is swung about its pivot,- said sliding movement of the hub causing the latch plate to be depressed into a position where it will c'ngage the stop and lock, the latch against movement.
13. In a door lock the combination with i a latch and latch plate slidably mounted in the casing of the lock of a spindle turnably mounted in the casing, a stop member over which the latch plate is normally adapted to slide, a yielding member adapted to support the latch plate, a hub member slidably mounted on the spindle, a door knob pi otally mounted on the spindle and a link member between the knob and the hub adapted to move the hub lengthwise upon the spindle when the knob is swung about its pivot, said sliding movement of the hub causing the latch plate to be depressed into a positlon where it will engage the stop and lock the latch against movement.
