FASTENING-INSERTING MACHINE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED L. MAoKnNzin, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in F astening- Inserting Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to fastening inserting machines, and is herein illustrated as embodied in a machine for inserting previously formed fastenings into shoe stock of the type shown in the patent to Godd-u, No. 1,030,775, granted June 25, 1912, to whlch patent reference may be made for a complete disclosure of various parts not fully described herein.
The fastening inserting mechanism of machines of this type comprises a driver for forcing the fastenings into the stock, a fastening receiving member having a passage formed therein to receive the driver, and a raceway for supplying fastenings to the fastening inserting mechanism. The delivery end of the raceway is spaced from the fastening receiving member a sufficient distance to permit means, commonly denominated a separator, to pass between them. The separator operates to select the fastenings one by one from the raceway and move them to the passage in the fastening receiving member. A part is integrally formed on the delivery end of the raceway for conveying the fastenings across the space between the delivery end of the raceway and the fastening receiving member to the passage in the fastening receiving member.
- Although such construction has proved to be in the main satisfactory there are some disadvantages attendant to its use. It is desirable that the upper or fastening supportin surface of the part on the delivery end 0 the raceway be located as close as possible to the top of the separator which passes beneath it in order that the separator may be caused to engage the fastenings as near to the heads thereof as possible to enable the separator to move bodily into the Specification of Letters Patent.

this reason it is necessary to aline the raceway carefully with the fastening receiving member, and to that end the delivery end of the raceway and the part formed thereon are carefully finished and ground afterbeing cast. If the delivery end of the raceway or the part formed thereon is inaccurately rounkl so as not to properly eoact with the fastening re ceiving member or with the separator, the entire raceway must be scrapped. In machines in which the raceway is formed to provide a plurality of sources of fastening supply, the raceway and the fastening receiving member are shiftable relatively to each other so as to bring either of the sources of fastening supply of the raceway into operativ'e relation with the passage of thememher. The raceways of such machines must be retaining important advantages of known constructions, will be free from the abovementioned and other disadvantages.
An important feature of the invention consists in providing the fastening receiving member of the fastening inserting mechanism, with a part extending in the direction of and to a point adjacent to the plane end surface of the raceway, the raceway being formed to present a su stantially horizontal fastening supporting surface at its end and said part operating to guide and convey the fastenings from the end of the raceway to the passage of the fastening receiving member. In accordance with a further feature of the invention, a guiding member is provided independent of the above-mentioned part for guiding the fastenings in their passage from the raceway to the fastening receiving member.

as @a guide for a driver :26 .to insert the "fas slot 32 which is adapted to be alined with the slot or slots of the raceway to receive the fastenings from the slot of the raceway and to guide and convey the same to the passage of the driver guide. The portion of cover plate 22 which extends beyond the end of the raceway and over the slot of the lug 30 to a point adjacent the passage of the driver guide assists in guiding the fastenings from the end of the raceway to the passage of the driver guide. Means are provided for moving the fastenings one by one along the slot of the lug 30 to the passage of the driver guide in the form of a separator 34 havin a part 36 which moves in a passage defined on one side by the wall of the driver guide, on the other side by the end wall 28 of the raceway, at the top by the lug 30, and at the bottom by a second lug 38 formed on the driver guide. The 111 38 prevents the pointed ends of the fastenings from being moved laterally by the separator and assists in guiding the fastenings to the assage 24.
The raceway is mov. le by connections with a rod 40 from the position shown in Fig. 2 to and from the position shown in Fig. 3. The rod 40 may be operated in any suitable manner, (not shown), the operating means therefor forming no part of the present invention.
Referring to Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, it will be seen that the end surfaces of the raceway on each side of its axis as indicated at 42 and 44 are formed at an angle to the center line or axis of the race-- way slightly less than a right angle to permit pivotal movement of the raceway on its fulcrum 46 so that either of the slots of the raceway may be alined with the slot 32 in the lug 30 of the driver guide. The degree of the angle is so related to the distance from the delivery end of the raceway to its fulcrum 46 as to permit the lugs on the driver guide to be brought into close association with either of the end surfaces of the raceway as is essential to the proper transfer of the fastenings from the racewaiy to the lug 30 of the driver guide.
11 Fig. 2 of the drawing the outer slot is shown in operative relation to the passage of the driver guide, the fastenings in the inner slot being retained by engagement with the lug 30 on the driver guide and with the separator. Fig. 3 shows the inner slot of the raceway in operative relation to the passage of the driver guide, the fastenings in the outer slot being retained by engagement with the lug on the driver 'uide. am enabled to utilize the lug on tiie driver guide as a retainer for the fastenings in the outer slot by extending it beyond the separator in the direction of the end of the raceway whereby it restrains the fastenings in said slot from movement into the path of movement of the separator.
The parts shown in Fig. 4 are arranged similarly to the parts described, it being noted, however, that in said figure is illustrated an embodiment of the invention comprising a raceway 106 having a single slot only which alines with the slot 132 of the upper lug 130 of the driver guide 108. The separator 134 operates in the manner previously described to move the fastenings one by one along the lug 130 to the passage 124 of the driver guide 108.
In Figs. 5 and 6 is shown a modification of the driver guide applicable to use with either the double raceway illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, or with the single raceway as illustrated in Fig. 4. In the modification, the upper lug instead of being integrally connected to the driver guide as in the constructions illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, is in the form of a plate 230 detachably connected thereto by means of screws 48 and 50. With reference to Fig. 6, it will be noted that the plate 230 constituting the upper lug has a widened portion 53 provided with an opening 52 to receive the screw 48 and a slot 232 to receive a fastening from the slot or slots in the raceway, and a reduced portion 54 forming a shoulder 56 which abuts against the end wall 58 of a groove formed in the driver guide at right angles to the fastening receiving passage. The slot 232 of the plate 230 is enlarged at 233 to form an opening alining with the passage 224 of the driver guide. The screw 50 is formed with a head which abuts against the edge of the reduced portion 54 of the plate 230, thus se-- curing the same firmly in position. If the detachable plate 230 on the driver guide becomes bent or broken, it can be replaced with little trouble or expense.
Fig. 7 illustrates a still further modification of the invention, involving differences in the construction both of the raceway and driver guide from the devices previously described. The upper surface of the raceway 306 is recessed at the delivery end oi. the raceway as indicated at 60, and the driver guide 308 is provided with the upper lug 330 and lower lug 338 extending therefrom in the direction of the end of the race way. As illustrated the upper lug 330, which is in the form of a plate detachably connected to the driver guide in the manner shown in Figs. 5 and 6, is extended to lie in the recess 00 in the end of the raceway. In this construction, the upper lug 330, the upper surface of which lies in the same plane with the upper surface of the raceway to the rear of the recess (30, receives the fastenings before they have left the raceway.
A still further modification of the invention is illustrated in Fig. 8, which constrnction embodies a driver guide 408 having a lug 430 extending therefrom in the direction of the raceway as in the constructions previously described. In this construction, however, the lower lu-g 438 which, in connection with the upper lug, forms a passage-way through which passes the upper section 436 of the separator, is provided at the end of the raceway 406 rather than on the driver guide, as in the constructions previously described.
Having described the invention, what '1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1'. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a raceway having a plane end surface and a fastening supporting surface arranged in a horizontal plane, a driver, a driver guide provided with a passage to receive a previously formed fastening and to receive said driver, a part extending from said driver guide in the direction of and to a point closely adjacent tothe plane end surface of the delivery end of the raceway, said part having its upper surface substantially in the same horizontal plane as the upper fastening supporting surface of the delivery end of raceway and being slotted to receive a previously formed fastening from the raceway and to support and guide it to the passage in the driver guide, and means for moving the fastenings one by one along said part to the passage in the driver guide.
2. Ina device of the class described, in combination, fastening inserting mechanism, a raceway provided with a source of fastening supply for supplying fastenings to the fastening inserting mechanism, and having a plane end surface and afastening supporting surface arranged in a horizontal plane, said fastening inserting mechanism comprising means for forcing the fastenin'gs into the work and a fastening receiving member provided with a fastening supporting surface also in'a horizontal plane and having ,apassage to receive said means and having a slotted projection extending therefrom in the direction of the Plane delivery end of the raceway to guide the fastenings from the raceway to said passage, and means underlying the projection for moving the fastenings guided by the projection to said passage. 3. In a machine of the class described, fastening inserting mechanism, and a raceway for supplying fastenings to the fastening; inserting mechanism provided with a plane end surface and arranged to be stationary during a plurality of cycles of operations of the machine, said fastening inserting mechanism comprising a fastening separator and a fastening recelving member spaced from the delivery end of the raceway, and means on said fastening receiving member for supporting and guiding thefastenings from the raceway to said member, comprising spaced projections extending into contact with said plane end surface of the raceway and designed to guide said separator. v
4. In a machine of the class described, in combination, fastening inserting mecha nism comprising means for forcing the fas tenings into the Work and .a fastening receiving member formed with a passageto receive said means, said member having projections extended therefrom, slotted -to permit the passage of previously formed fa-stenings into said passage, one of said members being constructed and arranged to support the fas tenings :by engagement with the heads there of, a raceway having a plane end surface arranged to abut against said projections, and means for moving the fastenings one by one from the raceway and through the slots of said projections into said passage.
5. In .a machine of the class described, in

6. In a. machine of the class described, in combination, fastening inserting mechanism comprising means for forcing the fastenings into the work and a fastening receiving member provided with a passage'to receive,
said means, said member having "a plate ex tending therefrom and detachably secured theretoprovided with an opening in al-inement with the passage and with a slot constructed and arranged to support previously formed fastening s and guide the same to the passageof said member, and means for moving the fastenin-gs one by one along said slot and into said passage.
7. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a raceway, fastening inserting mechanism comprising a fastening receiving member provided with a passage to receive previously formed fastenin s, .said member having a groove formed t erein substantially at right angles to said passage, :a plate removably secured in said groove provided with an opening .alinement with said passage, said plate projecting from said mem-' her in the direction of and to a point adj aeent to the end of the raceway and constructed and arranged to support and guide the fastening-s from the raceway to the passage in said member.
8. In a machine of the class described, in combination, fastening inserting mechanism,
means for supplying fastenings thereto, said fastening inserting mechanism comprising a fastening receiving member provided with a passage to receive previously formed fastenings, and having a groove formed therein substantially at right angles to said passage, a plate removably secured in said groove provided with an opening in alinement with said passage and constructed and arranged to guide the fastenings from the fastening supplying means to said member.
9. In a machine of the class described, in combination, fastening inserting mechanism, means for supplying fastenings thereto, said fastening inserting mechanism comprising a fastening receiving member formed with a passage to receive the fastenings, and provided with a groove substantially at right angles to the passage, a plate removably secured in the groove and provided with a reduced portion extending beyond the end wall of the groove forming a shoulder on the plate adapted to engage the end wall of the groove, and means co-acting with the reduced portion of the plate to secure the same in position on said member, the plate being constructed and arranged to receive fastenings from the fastening supplying means and to support and guide them to the passage in said member.
10. In a machine of the class described, fastening inserting mechanism and a raceway for supplying fastenings to the fastening inserting mechanism, said fastening inserting mechanism comprising a fastening receiving member having a part extending in the direction of and overlying the delivery end of the raceway to guide the fastenings from the raceway to said fastening recei ing member.
11. In a machine of the class described, in combination, fastening inserting mechanism. a raceway for supplying previously formed fastenings to said fastening inserting mechanism, said. fastening inserting mechanism comprising means for forcing the fastenings into the work and a fastening receiving member having a passage to receive said means and having a part extending therefrom constructed and arranged to overlie the end of the raceway and to receive fastenings from the raceway and to support and guide them to said passage.
12. In a machine of the class described, in combination, fastening inserting mechanism, a raceway for supplying previously formed fastenings to the fastening inserting mechanism, said fastening inserting mechanism comprising means for forcing the fastenings into the work and a member formed with a passage to receive the fastenings and to receive and guide said means, said member having a projection extending therefrom in the direction of and beyond the end of the raceway, the raceway being formed with a cut-away portion adjacent the end thereof constructed and arranged to receive the end of the projection with the upper surface of the projection substantially in alinement with the upper surface of the raceway, the projection being constructed and arranged to receive the fz'tstenings from the raceway and to support and guide them to the passage in said member.
13. In a machine of the class described, fastening inserting mechanism comprising a fastening receiving member and a raceway for supplying fastenings to the fastening receiving member formed to provide a plurality of sources of fastening supply and movable relatively to said member and having adelivery end all portions of which are in the same plane, said member having two projections extending into close prox imity to the delivery end of the raceway and constructed and arranged to support and guide fastenings from either of the sources of fastening supply of said raceway to said fastening receiving member.
14. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a raceway, fastening inserting mechanism comprising means for forcing the fastenings into the work and a fastening receiving member having a passage formed therein to receive and guide said means and having a projection formed with a slot communicating with said passage extending therefrom in the direction of and adjacent to the end of-the raceway, the raceway being pivoted at a point removed from said member and having its end surfaces formed at an acute angle to its axis on each side of the axis to permit the end surface of the raceway at either side of the axis to be brought into a position parallel to and in close engagement with the end of the projection, the raceway being provided with sources of fastening supply on opposite sides of its axis adapted to aline with the slot of said projection.
15. In a machine of the class described, in combination, fastening inserting mechanism comprising a fastening receiving member, a pivotally mounted raceway for supplying fastenings to said member provided with sources of fastening supply on opposite sides of its axis and having its end surfaces formed at an acute angle to the axis of the raceway, the degree of said angle being so related to the pivotal point of the raceway as to permit the end surface of the raceway at either side of its axis to be brought into a position parallel to and in close engagement with said member with the source of fastening supply on that side of the raceway in operative relation to said member.
16. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a raceway provided .with two slots to receive previously formed fastenings, a fastening inserting mechanism comprising a member having a passage toward which the fastenlngs are conveyed in said slots, sald member having a pro ection ex- 7 tending therefrom provided with a slot aring formed on opposite sides of the axis thereof and the end surfaces of the raceway on both sides of its axis being formed at an angle to the axis slightly less than a right angle to permit the end surface of the raceway in which either slot is formed to be brought into a position parallel to and in close engagement with the portion of the edge of said projection in which said" slot is formed with the slot of the raceway in alinement with the slot of the projection.
17. In a machine of the class described, in combination, fastening inserting mechanism, a raceway having all portions of its delivery end surface in the same plane and formed with a plurality of sources of fastening Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, 7
supply for supplying the fastening inserting mechanism, said fastening inserting mechanism comprising a fastening receiving member having a slotted projection extending therefrom with its upper surface in the same plane as'the fastening supporting surface of the delivery end of the raceway, the raceway and said member being relatively movable to position any of the sources of fastening supply in operative relation with the slot of the projcction, means underlying the projection for moving the fastenings along the projection to said member, the distance from the slot of the projection to its end being greater than the distance between the sources of fastening supply of the raceway to cause said projection to retain the fastenings in one slot from movement into the path of said means when another slot is in operative relation to said means.
