HENRY HELLWEG, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN,` ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HIALF TO LOUIS SGHLESIN'GER, 0F MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
'rRUNK-FASTENING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 19, 1919.
Application led October S1, 1917. Serial No. 199,415.
in a generic sense to mean a trunk, a tool box or any similar or equivalent receptacle.
`Referring to. the drawings which accompany 'this specification and form a part hereof, which drawings illustrate an em-l bodiment of this invention, Iand on which `drav'vings the same reference characters are used to designate the same parts wherever they may appear in each of the several views, Figure 1- is a front elevation of a trunk secured to a support; Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 2,-2 on Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows;v Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 3-3 on Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows; Fig. 4 is an end elevation of part of a trunk illustrating' a modified form of construction, prrts being broken away and the support ing shown in section;` and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 5-5 on Fig. 4, looking in the direction indicated by the a ows.
Referrlng to the drawings the reference numeral 1 designates a trun 2 a support such as the ruiming board of an automobile, for exam le and'3 a clamp. The clamp is illustrated by the drawings as rovided with an arm 4 which has separated earin 5 and 6 and'a' clamping member or screw i which is adapted to engage the opposite side of the support 2 at a, point between the bearings 5 and 6. This construction gives a threepoint contact and an exceedingly firm grip for the clamp. A lock nut 8 on the screw 7 can be jammed against the clamp to prevent the screw turning in the screwthreaded bore in the clamp and slacke'ning its grip due to 1ers or vibrations. The screw has a handle 9 provided with apertures 10 and 11 for a padlock 12. A bail 13 is pivoted to the1 clamp 3 by a pivot 14 and can be turned to be engaged with or disengaged from'the handle 9 to prevent the handle and screw from being turned. The padlock 12 pre1 vents the bail 13`from being disengaged from the handle 9 by an unauthorized person. The bail and the padlock provide the clamp with locking means.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the draw-r ings, the trunk 1 is provided with means to be gripped by the clamp in the following manner. Aperturas 15 are made in the side of the trunk adjacent its bottom to receive the arms 4 of clamps. Tubes 16 are secured on the interior of the trunk so that the apertures 15 are not in communication with .the interior of the trunk wherebythe contents of the trunk and its interior are protected from dirt and moisture. Slats 17 may be provided directly under the tubes 16, when the armsl 4 of the clamps bear directly against the bottom 18 of the trunk and when the bottom of the trunk is elevated by its fittings such as cnrner ieces 19, and escutcheons 20 may be applied to the trunk over the apertures 15 both for the sake of appearance and as strengthening plates.
Referring to Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings, instead of having the arms 4 of the clamps extend into the trunk, one or more plates 21 may be secured to the outside, or ends, of the trunk to be gripped by the clamp. Preferably a plate 21 is hinged to the trunk so that it can be folded against the trunk as shown in dotted lines on Fig. 5 of the drawings. A flange 22 prevents the clamp from being twisted to release the trunk and performs the same function in this respect as the construction illustrated by Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings.
Means, such as the flat spring 23 which can bear against either of the fiat faces 24 or 25, may be provided for'locking the plate provided With an arm adapted to extend 21 either in its extended or in its molded through Said aperture into the trunk and 10 positions. also' provided with a clamping' member, and
` VVhatis claimed is: means for-locking the 'clamp to prevent the The combination with a trunk p1'l vided unauthorized remov/al of the trunk.
