HYDRAULIC INTENSIFIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 9,1916. Serial No. 102,737.
To all whom it may concern:
State of Ohio, have invented certain new,
and useful Improvements in Hydraulic Intensifiers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descr1p-. tion of the invention, ,such as'will enable.
others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvement in, hydraulic intensifier, adapted particularly for use with shearing and other machines wherein the blade or other tool is actuated by two hydraulic plungers, the object being to insure a uniform movement of the tool in a parallel plane during the cutting or punching movement, by supplying motive fluid independently but in like volume to each plunger.
combinations of parts as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section of my improved apparatus, and Fig. 2 is a view in transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. l. 3 represents a steam cylinder, 4 the steam valve for regulating the supply of steam to the latter and 5 is a rod carried by the steam piston 6 and passing through an exteriorly threaded bushing 7 mounted to rotate in the head of the steam cylinder. This rod is provided with external spiral grooves 8 engaged by keys, splines or threads in the bushing 7, so that as the rod moves longitudinally with the steam piston, the bushing 7 will be rotated in its bearing by the rod. The bushing projects beyond the cylinder head, and its externally threaded outer end 9 carries an internally threaded nut 10 to which a lever 11, pivoted at 12 is mounted, the said lever being also connected by a rod 13 with the steam valve gearing, the parts being so constructed and connected that the steam will be automatically cut ed at a point dependent upon the amount of movement given to the operating lever.
The above features are all disclosed in my U. S. Patent No. 1,061,839 granted to me May 13, 1913, and are illustrated in connection with the improvement simply as the preferred means for actuating the hydraulic intensifiers, but I would have it understood that I do not confine this invention to this particular arrangement.
14 is the combined piston rod and plunger, secured to the steam piston 6. The outer endof this combined piston rod and plunger is mounted to move inthe cylinder 15, se-
cured to the frame 16 preferably formed in tegral with the cylinder head 17, a suitable gland 1S and packing 19 being employed for preventing any leakage aroundthe plunger rod 1a.. The outer portion of the combined piston rod and, plunger 14 is made hollow as shown, and forms in effect a cylinder 14- to receive the stationary-plunger 20, which is r gidly-secured at its top or outer end to the.
top or outer end of cylinder 15 The plungers ltand 20 are of such length that when the steam piston 6 is in its lowest position, the outer end of the plunger 11 will overlap the adjacent end of stationary plunger 20, a suitable packing 21 ,bein r in: My invention consists in the parts; and v tool, so that each cylinder of the shear,
punch or other machine tool, will be actuated by water received from an independent source of fluid supply.
The top or free end of plunger 14 is of the same area as the lower end of the stationary plunger 20, so that the water forced from cylinder 15, and cylinder 14 in plunger 14; will be equal in volume and pressure. The pressure in the cylinders 15 and 14 is derived from the steam cylinder 3 and its piston 6, and in the operation of the apparatus, the cylinders 15 and 14* including the hollow stationary plunger 20 will be filled from a reservoir or other source of supply, which will also compensate for any loss due to leakage or any other cause, so that the said cylinders, pipes, and other connections leading to the hydraulic cylinders on the shear or other machine maybe kept completely filled, by opening valves in the pipes leading from the reservoir.
When the piston of the steam cylinder is Patented Aug. 5, 1919',
moved toward hydraulic cylinder 15, water A having an outlet pipe, a hollow in cylinders on the shear or other tool with which the intensifier is connected, willconsequently be cause to move to the same extent and at uniform speed, and thus maintain and insure an even distribution of'pressure over the entire length of the knife or other tool holder regardless of n the position along the length of the linlfe or tool where the cutting or punching is done.
It is evident that'many slight changes might'be resorted to in the relative arrangement of partsshown and described without departing fromthe'spirit and scope of my invention. Hencel would have it understood that I do notwishto confine myself to the exact construction ,and'arrangement of parts shown and described, but
'Having fully described my invention what I'claim as new and desire to secureby Letters-Patent, is 7 1. The combination of a hydraulic cylinder open at one end, stationary hollow plunger secured within said cylinder, each movable plunger open at one end and embracing the free end of the stationary plunger, and means for actuating said movable plunger, the surfacearea ofthefree end'ofthe hollow movable plunger and the surface'area of the chili: of this p itilt m ay be obtained tor'five cents free end of the hollow stationary plunger being substantially the same whereby fluid will be discharged from the hydraulic cylinder and plunger in equal volumes.
2. The combination of a steam cylinder, its piston and combined piston rod and plunger, the latter being hollow from its free end part way its length, a hydraulic cylinder in which said combined piston rod and plunger moves, a stationary hollow plunger within and secured to said hydraulic cylinder and terminating in the open end'of the combined piston rod and plunger, an outlet from the hydraulic cylinder and an outlet'from the stationary hollow plunger, the surface area of the free end of the hollow movable piston rod and plunger and the surface area of'the free end of the hollow stationary plunger being: substantially the same whereby the fluid will be discharged from the hydraulic cylinder and plunger in equal volumes.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presenceof two subscribing witnesses.
