An object of the invention is to provide a mechanism automatically operated, at the reproduction of a record,
engagement with the record and return the same, together with the tone arm, to its original or starting position, sound box is again lowered and the stylus caused to engage the record groove. To this end, thereis rovided Va tone arm actuated vlatehing mem er which -is thrown to a -releasing position, when the sound box has traversed the record groove, to permit the rotation'of a disk or similar element. This rotation of the' latter member is designed to operate a lever and cause the same to engage a lifting arm which raises the sound box from the record and then, through' the medium of the further movement of Athe lever, swings. the same, together with the tone arm, to its original position with thesound bon lstill elevated. Still further movement of the said lever releases said litting arm and allows the reproducing stylus to be lowered into contact with the record after which the rotary disk is automatically. stopped by engagement with said latching member and the parts are in position for another operation.

One form of the invention, illustrated in the drawings, is so constructed that the same may be readily applied to certain talking machines now commonly used, which include the'usual turn table 15 upon which are supported the different disk records, the swinging tone arm 16, and the sound box or reproducer 17 having the usual stylus 18.
The invention consists .of a shaft 19 having a-suitable connection with the usual motor (not shown) for operating` the machine and said shaft is rotated and held stationary, when desired;` throu hthe medium of any suitable clutch mec nismA also associated therewith but not shown in the drawings. The shaft 19 is mounted in a suitable support 20 and has secured to one end thereof a rotatable disk 21 having a shoulder 22 on its periphery. When-the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 3 a latching mem' ber 23, pivoted at 24 to the support 20, has a shoulder 25 in engagement with the shoulder 22 on the disk 21 and a. small spring 26 i retains said latehing member in this position so as. to'prevent rotation of said disk and consequent rotation. of the shaft 19.
Means are provided for lifting the sound box 17`from engagement with the record at the completion of the reproduction thereof and consist of a sound box lifting device 27 in the form of lever pivoted at 28 to an arm 29 extending from the main portion of the tone arm'16. One end 300i theA lifting device 27 engages the under side of the goose neck of the sound box while the other end is curved as indicated at 31 and adapted to be engaged at the completion of a reproduction by an Vangular piece 32 carried by the upper end of the lever 33. In order to permit of this engagement and consequent actuation of the sound box lifting device 27 the tone arm 16 has secured thereto a contact member 34 which, after the stylus 18 has traversed the record groove, engages or contacts with the latching member 23 and thrusts the same to the posi-tion shown in Fig. 4 whereupon the shoulders 22 and are disengaged and the disk 21 permitted to rotate. It is to be noted that at the beginning of the rotation of said disk the reproducer or sound box lifting device is in engagement with the end ,i
32 of the lever 33, as shown, and remains until the parts assume the position shown in Fig. 8. The disk 2 1-is provided with the laterally extending pin 35 which engages in the slot 36 formed in the lever 33, said lever being also provided with another slot 37 at its lower end into which projects a pin 38 carried by the support 20. As the rotation of the disk 2'1 continues the pin 35 engages the lower end of the slot 36 and causes the end 32 of the lever 33 to describe a predetermined path of movement, as shown in Fig. 7, with the assistance of a cam member 39 adjustable by means of an arm 40' to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 9 when it is desired to reproduce larger records. This cam member 39 includes spaced elements, the upper one adjustable, which provide a slot 41 therebetween and a pin 42 carried by the lever 33 engages under the lowermost element of the cam, as shown in Fig. 7, just after the disk 21 has started to rotate. The lower end of the lever 33 containing the slot 37 is forced downwardly, during this movement, against the tension of a spring 43 until the upper end of said slot 37 is in engagement with the pin 3S whereupon said pin will act as a fulcrum for said lever for a short space of time. Upon reaching the farther end of the lowermost element of the cam 39 the pin 42 will ride over said end and, by reason of the tension of the spring 43 secured to the lower end of the lever 33, said pin will be caused to engage the upper element ofthe cam 39 and be forced into the slot 41 between said elements. Continued rotation of the disk 21 will swing the lever so that the pin V42 will move .to the other end of the slot 41 until disengaged'from the upper element of the cam 39. Up to this time it will be seen that the sound box or reproducer lifting device 27 has'been adjusted'to its lifting posi-tion` as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and that the same remains in this yposition throughout the movement of the lever 33 and consequent movement of the tone arm 16 to its original or starting position. When the pin 42 disengages from the slot 41, the spring 43 will cause the upper end of the lever 33 to suddenly take an upward vertical course` as clearly shown in Fig. 7, whereupon the lift-- l ing device 27will be lowered and permit the los lBy referring to the tone arm 16 as the same is moving transversely across the record during the reproduction thereof. The invention also contemplates the automatic reproduction of several records 4in succession, and to this end'there is provided a substantially U-shaped frame 44 which is preferably. secured to the chine and overhangs'the turn-table -15 thereof. The horizontal member of the' frame 44 has extending laterally therefrom an arm 45 on which is mounted a reciprocating member 46 having a slot 47 adjacent its.

The other extremity of the member 46 is provided-with a small extension or pawl 51 which, as lthe'member is being moved as just described, engages one of the teeth of the ratchet wheel 52 which is se cured to the-upperend of a vertical shaft 53 thus giving said shaft approximately onetwelfth of a revolution, as shown in the drawings. In order to readily permit o'f the records being lowered onto the turn table the same are each provided with radially extending slots or openings ($0, 60', and (30, correspending in number to the number of record supporting arms the same shape as said arms but of slightly larger. proportions so that when the shaft 53 is rot-ated and one ofthe arms is brought into registration with its particular opening. or slot .the record will be lowered.l In the embodiment shown in the drawings provision is made for mounting three records upon the supporting arms and the parts for rotating the shaft 53 are adjusted so ithat said shaft is given one-twelfth of a revolution when actuated thereby. ln order to avoid confusion in the illustration of the j invent-ion, as shown in Fig. 11, the slots for ,only the lowermost and the next superimposed records are. shown, respectively in -dotted and full lines. Referring to Fig. 11
it will be seen that when the shaft 53 is rotated in a clock-wise direction the, supporting arms 54, 54 and 54 will rotate one-twelfth of a revolution, as previously stated, and will then be in registration with the slots G0, 60 and 60', shown in dotted lines which will permit of the record being lowered. Upon the lowering of the lowermost4r record the next superimposed record will be lowered by gravity onto the supporting arms and when theshaftr 53 is next actuated as previously described, the same operation will take place. In a talking machine, the combination of a swinging tone arm, a sound box carried thereby, a lifting device for the sound box, a lever arranged to be engaged by said lifting device to raise said sound box at the completion ofl a reproduction, a revoluble member with connections4 for moving said lever to convey said tone arm and sound box to their starting positions, and a latch for` retaining the revoluble member in inoperativeposltion while the -stylus of the sound box is traversing the record groove, and operated by contact with the tone arm, when said groove have been traversed, to release the revoluble member.
