The governor is actuated by power derived fromthe turbine. through variablespeed frictionaldrive-mechanism. As shown in Fig. 2 one, end of the turbine-shaft 11 by a friction-wheel 1 1 of which the hub is mounted on a countershaft 15 parallel with the face of the disk 13. The friction-wheel is splined to the countershaft, so that it may rotate the latter while being free to move alonglthe ,countershaft and thus vary the distance'between theaxis of the disk and its point of engagement with the friction-wheel. .The countershaft 15 is provided, at one end, with a pinion 16which drives a gear 17 fixed on the drive-shaft 10 of the governor.
A collar 30 is connected with the hub of the friction-wheel 14 by ball-bearings, and this collaris pivoted to a bifurcated arm 18 projecting ,from a sleeve 19. This sleeve is screw-threaded, and is mounted upon a screw-threaded shaft2O parallel with the countershaft15. The shaft 20 is connected,
by bevel-gears 21, with a vertical shaft 22. By rotation of the shaft 22, manually or in anyconvenient manner, the shaft 20 may be rotated so as to cause the sleeve 19 to move along the shaft and produce a traversingmovement of the friction-Wheel 1 1 on the countershaftt This movement results in a change in the speed of rotation imparted to the governor for any tation ofthe turbine shaft.

A lug 28 projects from the bottom of the casing 26, and is perforated to embrace a stud 29 projecting from the plate 24. A spring coiled around the stud engages the lug and acts to swing the casing 26 rearwardly about the pivotal mounting provided by the shaft 20, so'as to press the friction-wheel constantly against the disk with a uniform pressure and to take up any wear which may occur in these members. i
Through the parts just described the change-speed mechanism is firmly supported by a direct connection with the'turbin'e-casing, so that the two make a unitary con structl-on and are; mamtamed always 1n proper operative relation. Another valu-* able feature of the invention resides in the relative arrangementbf the shafts 10, 15
and 20; The shafts 10 and 20'- 'are in axial alinement, and consequently any swinging movement of the casing 26, and the countershaft 15 which is supported byit, does not interfere with the correct meshing of the gears16 and I7; Owing to the fact that the shaft 20 constitutes notonly the means for 1 moving the arm 18 and the friction-wheel,
but also the pivotal support. of the casing 26, the swinging movements of the casing do not interfere with the actuation and Control? of the friction-wheel by the shaft 20;

The combination, with an engine, and a governor provided with a drive-shaft,of a countershaft; a support in which the countershaft is journaled parallel 'with said drive-shaft, said support being. movable definitely stated its true scope in the fol- 7 about an axis; coincident with. the axi'sof thei drive-shaft; a friction-wheel splined on the countershaft; a frictional drive-member Withwhich the friction-wheel coeperates, said drive-memberbeing connected with and actuated by the engine; gears connecting the governor drive-shaft with the countershaft;
meansfor moving said support as aforesaid, to regnlatethe engagement of the frictionwheel with the frictional drive-member; and means for moving the friction-wheel along thecountershaft .to vary its point of engagement withthe drive-member. l
2. The combination, with a governor provided With a drive-shaft, of a support arranged to swing about an axis substantially coincident with the axis-of said drive-shaft;
a countershaf-t journaled' on said-support parallel with said axis; gears connecting the" drive-shaft and the countershaft; a frictions wheel splined to the'countershaft; a drivingmember in frictional engagement with the friction-wheel; a" screw-threaded shaft substantially coaxial with the pivotal movement of said support and means, formoving the friction-wheel along the countershaft, comrisin a member connectin the friction- Wheel and the threaded shaft and having a screw-threaded engagement with the latter.

The combination with an engine of a governor provided with a drive shaft, a counter-shaft connected to thedrive shaft, a friction disk fixed upon the engine shaft, a friction wheel carried by the counter-shaft and adjustable across the face of the disk, a main housing inclosing the disk and provided with an aperture through which the friction wheel projects to contact with the friction disk, and a supplemental housing for the friction wheel.
7. The combination with an engine of a governor provided with a drive shaft, a counter-shaft connected to the drive shaft, a friction disk fixed upon the engine shaft, a friction wheel carried by the counter-shaft and adjustable across the face of the disk, a main housing held in fixed position, and a supplemental housing pivotally supported upon the main housing carrying the countershaft and inclosing the friction wheel.
8. The combination with an engine of a governor provided with a drive shaft, a counter-shaft connected to the drive shaft, a friction disk fixed upon the engine shaft, a friction wheel carried by the counter-shaft and adjustable across the face of the disk, a main housing held in fixed position, a threaded shaft rotatably mounted on the main housing, a supplemental housing pivoted to swing about the axis of the threaded shaft and carrying the counter-shaft and in closing the friction wheel, and a threaded sleeve mounted on the threaded shaft and connected with the friction Wheel for adj ust ing the latter across the face of the friction CllSk.
