To all whom 'it may-concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL GOLDMAN, a

lcitizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, inthe county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heels, of which the following is a specification.

Heretofore it has beenthe practice to provide metal heels with fastening prongs secured to the heel rigidly by casting or otherwise so that if one or more prongs becomes 'broken inapplying the heel there is no way of replacing the broken prong and the heel cannot be used and therefore becomes a totalv loss,

My invention has for its object to provide ametal heel with removable fastening prongs so that any of them can be replaced when required.

A. further object of the invention is to provide a metal heel with removable fastening prongs so that the heels and-the 'prongs may be more coinpactly packed together or packed separately for shipment.

In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated my invention in a metallic heel for a ladys shoe and referring thereto:

Referring to the drawings 6 is a metallic heel which can be made in Aany suitable shape and size. This heel is preferably y made of aluminum and cast hollow in its upper portion at least. A plurality of ledges 7 are cast integral within and around the upperedge thereof and slightly below said edge. These ledges are provided with threaded sockets 8 to receive the threaded heads 9 of the prongs 10. The head of each prong is provided with at least two parallel squared sides 11 totaccommodate a tool for Specification of Letters Patent. I ai'nted uly 22, 1919.

inserting or removing the prong'from the heel. In applying aheel it is customary to press the` prongs against the shoe to mark the position thereof and then to make holes 1nthe shoe at the prong marks-with anawl or other tool. Then the .prongs are in-A serted in these holes the heel driven to place after which` the prongs are bpnt over inside the shoe and covered with an inner sole. If a prong is broken during the application of the heel, the heel may be removed from the shoe, a new prong substituted for everyl broken prong and the heel applied as before explained. `My invention prevents the ,Waste and loss of'heels due to breakage offV the prongs'in applying them to shoes and it also enables the heels lo be packed separately for shipment or the prongs may be loosely arranged in the hollow of the heel but not connected therewith.

The invention provides a great saving to cob-blers who have heretofore suffered the loss of the entire heel whenever a prong was broken in applying a heel to a shoe. It is necessary that allf'the prongs provided for the purpose should be properly engagedv with the shoe to hold the heel in place andv if any prong is broken there has been no means of replacing it. My invention provides a simple means for replacing any prongs broken during. the application of the heel, or during the removal of the heel'for any purpose.

The ledges are located on an ,incline or otherwise sufficiently below the top edge of the heel so that the squared portions 11 of the heads of the prongs will light below the plane of the edge ,of the heel and thus'not interfere with the application of a heel to the shoe.

I claim.:

1. The combination of a metallic heel having a plurality of ledges arranged within its. upper edge and threaded sockets in said ledges, and prongs having threaded heads removably secured in said sockets.
