SAFETY-GUARD FOR POWER-PRESSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all wiwm it may concern;
Be it known that I, FRANoIs L. KELLEN- BERGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety-Guards for Power-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved safety guard attachment for a power press or other like machine, the object of the invention being to provide an improved attachment of this kind which may be readily installed on a power press or other like machine and which is automatically operated by the press.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a power press provided with a guard constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line 22 of Fig. 1.

The power press here shown embodies a bed 1, standards 2, vertical guides 3, a plunger 4:, a crank shaft 5 and the pitman 6 which connects the crank of the crank shaft with the plunger.
In accordance with my invention I provide a guard 7 which has rearwardly extending arms 8 at its ends, each arm being provided with a longitudinal slot 9. I also provide a rock shaft 10 which is mounted in bearings 11 which are bolted to the outer sides of the press standards. Rock arms 12, 13 are secured on the ends of the rock shaft by means of keys 1 1 which are inserted in grooves 15 with which the rock shaft is provided, the keys having shoulders 16 which engage in recesses 17 with which the rock arms are provided. Each rock arm is provided in its outer side with a longitudinal T-shaped groove or channel 18 which receives one of the arms 8 of the guard so that the guard is adjustably mounted on the rock arms and may be adjusted forwardly and rearwardly as may be required, the said arms 8 of the guard being movable longitudinally in the grooves or channels 18 of the rock arms. Bolts 19 are fitted in openings 20 with which theroek arms are provided, and said bolts pass through the slots 9 and are provided at their outer ends with winged adjusting. and clamplng nuts 21, so that the guard can be secured in any desired adjusted position.
On one end of the crank shaft of the press is secured an eccentric cam 22 by means of a key 23 which is fitted in a groove in said crank shaft and has a shoulder 2-l which fits in a recess 25 with which the eccentric cam is provided. A collar 26 is also secured on the crank shaft at a suitable distance from the inner side of the eccentric cam.
A red 27 which is longitudinally adjusta'ble, comprises a member 28 which has a longitudinal slot 29, and also comprises a member 30 which is pivotally connected by a pi-n 31 to one of the rock arms 12 as at Said rod 27 also has an intermediate member 33 which is screwed to the member 30 as at 341 and is screwed to the member 28 as at 35. Jam nuts 36, 37 are also provided which serve to secure the rod at any desired longitudinal adjustment. The member 28 of the rod is arranged between the eccentric cam 22 and the collar 26 on the crank shaft, the crank shaft extending through the slot 29. Said member 28 is also provided on its outer side, with rollers 38 which are mounted for rotation on stub shafts 39 and engage the upper and lower sides of the eccentric cam.
The eccentric cam is arranged with its longest radius at an angle, nearly a right angle, with respect .to the crank of the crank shaft and hence said eccentric cam is so timed as to cause the guard to be moved downwardly ahead of the press plunger and to be moved upwardly slightly in advance of the upstroke of the plunger, so that the guard while serving to prevent and guard against accidents is out of the way during the upstroke of the plunger and in nowise interferes with feeding of the press.
It will be understood that the eccentric cam coacts with the tappet rollers 38, the rod 27 and the rock arms to impart rocking motion to the safety guard and it will be also understood that by the provision of the slot 29 and the arrangement of the crank shaft in said slot, the upper end of the rod 27 is guided by the crank shaft.
While I have herein shown and described my improved safety guard as attached to and used in connection with a power press, I would have it understood that the safety guard may be used in connection with other kinds of machinery as well, and I do not desire to limit myself in this particular.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts, without departing from the spirit of my invention, and
within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is u 1. In combination with a machine of the class described, embodying a crank shaft, a reciprocating element, and a pitman connecting said element to the crank of said shaft; a guard attachment comprising an arm mounted for rocking movement, a guard element carried and rocked by said arm, an eccentric cam on said crank shaft, and a rod connected to said rock arm and having a slot through which the crank shaft extends, said rod being also provided with tappet elements which engage opposite sides of the periphery of said eccentric cam.
2. In combination with a machine of the class described, embodying a crank shaft, a reciprocating element, and a pitman connecting said element to the crank of said shaft; a guard attachment comprising an arm mounted for rocking movement, a guard element carried and rocked by said arm, an
eccentric cam on said crank shaft and a rod connected to said rock arm and having a slot through which the crank shaft extends, said rod being also provided with tappet elements which engage opposite sides of the periphery of said eccentriccam, said rod being longitudinally extensible.
3. In combination with a machine of the class described, embodying a crank shaft, a reciprocating element, and a pitman connecting said element to the crank of said shaft, a guard attachment comprising an arm mounted for rocking movement, a guard element carried and rocked by said arm, an eccentric cam on said crank. shaft, and a rod connected to said rock arm and having a slot through which the crank shaft extends, said rod being also provided with tappet elements which engage opposite sides of the periphery of said eccentric cam, the said guard element having an arm connected to said rock arm for longitudinal adjustment.
