Be it known that I, THOMAS A. KEMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Iiocks, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to locks for doors and other structures, and more particularly to a lock in which the bolt is actuated by a mechanism other than, but controlled by, a key, thus relieving the key of the burden which is imposed upon it when it is required to move the bolt.
The object of the invention is to provide a controlling device which will control the movement of the bolt actuating mechanism and will itself be controlled by the key, and which will be very simple in its construction and operation; and of such a character that it can be manufactured at a low cost and will not be liable to be broken or disarranged by the normal operation of the lock.
It is also an obect of the invention to provide a controlling device of this kind comprising but a single member which will cooperate with both the bolt actuating mechanism and with the key controlled device to control the movement of the bolt actuating mechanism; and Which, further, will coperate with the key actuated device to prevent the removal of the key after the bolt operating mechanism has been released and before the bolt has been actuated.
Other objects of the invention will. appear as the mechanism is described in detail.

plication is a division. It will be understood, however, that the device of the present application is useful not only in recording locks but in locks of various kinds and that the mechanism here illustrated is chosen for the purpose of illustration only.
In that form of the invention here illustrated I have shown the bolt 1 as slidably mounted in a casing 2 having a base plate 8 rigidly secured to the door, or other supporting structure. Any suitable means may be provided for actuating the bolt. In the present instance, a shaft 4 is ournaled in the base plate 3 and extends through a slot 5 in the bolt. Rigidly secured to this shaft is a cam 6 which is arranged between two studs, 7, projecting from the face of the bolt and preferably provided with anti-friction rollers. The shape of the cam is such that it will in all positions be in engagement with, or will lie very close to, both studs, thus preventing the movement of the bolt independently of the cam and the shaft 1. In the present instance the shaft is designed to rotate in one direction only and the shape of the cam is such that a half rotation of the shaft will project the bolt and the next half rotation of the shaft will retract the bolt. lvleans are also provided to prevent the return movement of the bolt after it has been started in one direction before its movement has been completed, and to accomplish this I have here shown a ratchet wheel 8 which is secured to the shaft and engaged by a paw'l 9 which permits of the rotation of the shaft in but one direction. Any suitable means may be provided for actuating the shaft, preferably it is provided at one or both ends with an operating member, such as a knob 10. In the particulaiI lock to which the invention is applied it is desirable that the bolt should be always free to be operated from the inside of thc door and I have, therefore, shown thc outer portion, 11, of the shaft 4, with which the knob 10 is connected, as separated from that part of the shaft which carries the bolt actuating cam, and have provided the adjacent ends of the two parts of the shaft with cooperating clutch members, 12 and 13, which will cause the shaft as a whole to be rotated when the knobl is actuated, but Will permit the inner part of the shaft to be rotated to actuate the bolt when the outer and inner part are locked against movement. The knob 10 may be secured to the shaft in any suitable manner, but in the present construction it is shown as ournaledy in an escutcheon 14 which is secured to the outer side of the door and is provided with a longitudinal bore to receive the end of the part 11 of the shaft. The shaft is so connected with the knob as .to cause it to rotate therewith and in the present construction this is accomplished lby providing the part 11 of the shaft with a longitudinal slot 15 which opens through the outer end of the shaft and is adapted to :receive a pin 16 mounted inthe trunnion of the yknob and extending transversely of the bore thereof.

The locking or controlling device for Athe bolt actuating mechanism may be applied to the bolt, or its actuating mechanism, at any suitable point, but in the present embodiment it is preferable that it should be connected with the outer part 11 of the shaft and 1 have, therefore, shown the controlling` device as mounted Within the escutcheon 1% and cooperating with that portion of the shaft which extends through the escutcheon. The bolt ,actuating device may take various forms, but in the present construction l have illustrated it as comprising` a single controlling member, or plate, 1S, slidably mounted upon the escutcheon, and preferably secured thereto by means of screws 19 extending` through slots 20 in the plate. T his controlling member is provided with a part which is movable intorand out of locking coperation with a part of the bolt actuating mechanism. As here illustrated a locking member. or disk, 21. is l,rigidly secured to the bolt operating shaft, this being preferably vaccomplished by pinning the saine to a collar 22 which is mounted on :the inner -end of the trunnion of the knob 10 and is secured to that trunnion by the pin 1G, which also extends through the slot in the outer part .11 of the shaft, rthus tying together the knob, the shaft, .and the disk. rllhis disk is provided With one or more notches, 23, there being, Ain the ,present instance, two of these notches .arranged in vdialnetricaliy opposite portions of the disk, te receive a part car-Vv to the key barrel.

The controlling member 18 is `preferably spring actuated to cause it to be held normally in engagement With the disk 21 When the bolt actuating devices are in their normal, or home, positions, and as here shown a spring 25 is connected at one end with the yplate and at its other end vvith a pin 26 secured to the escutcheon and extending` through a longitudinal slot, or opening, i7, formed in the controlling member 18.
A suitable key actuated device is provided to move the controlling member, against the tension of the spring, into an inoperative position, thereby releasing the bolt actuating mechanism and permitting` the same to be operated. This device may take various forms and Will probably be modified to accommodate it to the various types of locks to which the invention is applied. 1n the present construction I have employed a cylinder loc-k of a Well known type, which comprises a rotatable key barrel 28 slotted to receive a key 29, the insertion Vof which yactuates the .tumblers to .release :the key Vbarrel and permit the same to be rotated by the key, and I have connected the key actuated member or device with this key barrel. As here shown Athis key actuated device is in the form of a disk, .or plate, 30, rigidly secured to the inner end of the key barrel, preferably by mounting the same .upon a hub or collar. 31, .which in turn .is .secured A spring 32 coiled about the hub 31 and engaging a pin 253 on lthe escutcheon tends to hold the key barrel normally in its home position, in which position only can the key be removed therefrom. This :key actuated device-and the controlling member have cooperating partslso .arranged that the movement of the kej,y Ybarrel from its .normal or home position will cause the controlling member to be moved into 4its inoperative position. and further. the two parts so cooperate that .the controlling inember will vbe retained in its finoperative position and the key .barrel will ybe prevented from returning to its lhome position until the bolt `has been actuated. In the present arrangement .of the mechanism the controlling member 18 is provided With an opening arranged in alinement with the key barrel, and .the disk, or fplate, 30, which is carried by the lkey barrel, is arranged within this opening and has a part adapted to .bear against one `end vwall of the opening to actuate ythe controlling member. As here shown the disk 80 has a cam-shaped portion, or nose, the lower portion of nhich will, when the .disk is in its normal position extend substantially ,parallel with the lower end Wall of the opening in thc controlling member., VLe disk is rotated the cam-shaped. portion thereof Will. bear upon the adjacent portion ot the controlling member and move the same downward a distance suiiicient to disengage the lug 24 of the controlling member from the locking disk of the bolt actuating mechanism. To retain the key actua-ted disk in Athis position the lower wall ot the opening Sfiis provided with an offset portion which forms a shoulder 3G. so arranged that when the key actuated disk has moved the controlling member to its inoperative position the cam-shaped portion, or nose, B5. thereof1 will pass the shoulder 36 thus permitting the controlling member to be moved upward by its spring a distance sulicient to cause the shoulder to lie in front of the nose et the disk and thus lock the same against return movement. This upward movementof the controlling member is not` however, sutilcient to .cause the lug 24e thereor1 to assume an operative position with relation to the disk 21. The upper portion of the opening 84- in the controlling member is provided with a shoulder 37 which forms a. stop arranged in the path or" a projection or nose 38 carried by the key actuated disk and serves to limit the movement 0f this disk. When the controlling member has been moved into its inoperative position and the parts are in the position shown in Fig. et it will be apparent that the bolt actuatii'ig mechanism is tree to be operated and that the key barrel is locked out of its normal position, so that the key cannot be removed.
Means are provided for releasing` the controlling member from the key actuating device and permitting the same to be moved into its operative position when the bolt actuating mechanism has completed its operative movement, thus causing the bolt operating mechanism to be automatically locked at the end of each operation. This means also serves to release the key barrel and permit the key to be removed at the completion of the operation of the bolt ac tuating mechanism. In the mechanism here shown these results are accomplished by providing the locking disk 21 of the bolt actuating mechanism with a cam-shaped projection, or noso, 39, arranged at the iorward side of each notch 23. As the bolt operating mechanism approaches the end of its operative movement one of the camshaped portions ot the disk will engage the lug of the controlling member and move this member downwardl),Y a distance su'liicient to move the shoulder 36 out of the path of the nose 35 of the key actuated disk, and thus permit this disk to be returned to its normal position by the action of 'the spring As soon as the movement of the bolt actuating mechanism has carried the cani-shaped portion of the locking disk 2l past the lug 24 the spring 25 will move the locking member upwardly and the lug 24 will be moved into the notch in the disk 21, thus again locking the shaft l1- against rotation.
The operation of the mechanism has been fully described in connection with the de scription of the several parts thereof and it will be apparent that I have provided a lock controlling device which is very simple in its construction and operation and which will positively control the movements of both the bolt actuating mechanism4 and the key; and further, that the device .is highly efficient in operation and easy of maintenance as it has no part which will 'be easily broken or disarranged in the normal operation of the lock.
`I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the details of construction as various modifications thereof will occur to a person skilled in the art.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a lock, bolt actuating mechanism., a controlling device movable into and out of a position to lock said mechanism against operative movement, a key actuated device to move said controlling device into an inoperative position, and means to automatically return said controlling' device to its operative position.
2. In a lock, bolt actuating mechanism, a controlling device movable into and out of a position to lock said mechanism against operative movement, a. key actuated device to move said controlling device into an inoperative position and to retain the same in that position, and means controlled by said actuating means to release said controlling device and permit it to return to its operative position.
3. In a lock, a bolt, a controlling device movable into and out of a position to prevent said bolt from being operated, a key actuated device having a portion to engage said controlling device, move the same into and retain the same in an inoperative position. and means other than said key actuated device to release said controlling` device from said key actuated device.
Il. In a lock, bolt actuating mechanism, a controlling device movable into and out of a position to lock said mechanism against operative movement. a key actuated device having a cam-shaped portion to engage said controlling device and move the same into an inoperative position, and to retain said controlling device in said position, said actuating mechanism having means to release said controlling device from said key actu* ated device.
5. In a lock, bolt actuating mechanism, a controlling device movable into and out of a position to lock said mechanism against operative movement, a key actuated device to move said controlling de\'ice into an inoperative position, said controlling device and said key actuated device having parts cooperating to retain them in the positions to which they have been moved, and said actuating mechanism having means for disconnecting said parts to permit them to return to their normal positions.
G. In a lock, bolt actuating mechanism, a controlling device movable into and out of a position to lock said mechanism against operative movement, a key actuated device to move said controlling device into an inoperative position, said controlling device having means to prevent the return of said key actuated device to its normal-position, and said bolt actuating mechanism having` means to release said key actuated device from said controlling device.
7. In a. lock, bolt actuating mechanism, a controlling device movable into and out of a position to lock said mechanism against operative movement, a spring to hold said device normally in locking relation to said mechanism, a key actuated device to move said controlling device against the tension of said sprino', .said devices having coperating parts to `hold them in the positions to which they have been moved, and means actuated by said bolt operating mechanism to disconnect said part-s and permit said devices to return to their normal positions.
S. In a lock, bolt Iactuating mechanism, a controlling device movable into and out of a position to lock said mechanism against operative movement, `a key actuated device to move said controlling device to an inoperative position., ,a spring tending to move said key lactuated device to its normal position, said controlling device having a shoulder adapted to engage said key actuated device and prevent the same Jfrom returning to its normal position, ,and means actuated by said bolt actuating mechanism to move said shoulder out of the path of said key actuated device to permit the latter to return to its normal position.
9. In a lock, bolt actuating mechanism, a controlling device movable into and out of a position to lock said mechanism against operative movement, a spring tending to move `said controlling device toward its operative position, a key actuated device to move said controlling device into an inoperative position, said controlling device having apart arranged to be moved into the path of said key actuated device when said controlling device has been moved to its inoperative position, and means actuated b v said bolt actuating mechanism to move said part of said controlling device into an inoperative position to permit Vsaid key actuated device to return to its normal position.
10. In a iock, a bolt actuating mechanism comprising a disk having a notch, a controlling device having a part adapted to enter the notch inL said disk, a spring tending to move said part of said controlling device toward said notch, akey actuated device having a cam-shaped portion arranged to engage said controlling device to move the same away from said disk, said conL trolling device having a part arranged to be moved into the path of said rkey actuated device when said controlling ,device has been moved into an inoperative position, and a spring tending to move said` key actuated device toward its normal position, that part of said controlling device Which enters the notch in said disk being arranged to be engaged by a part carried by said disk to impart movement to said controlling device to disengage the same from ythe camshaped portion of said key actuated device to permit the latter to be returned to its normal position.
11. In a lock, bolt actuating mechanism, a controlling device comprising a Asingle member movable into and out of a position to lock said mechanism against operativemovement, a key actuated device to move saidY controlling member into an inoperative position, and means for automatically return said controlling member to its operative position.

In a lock, bolt actuating mechanism, a controlling device comprising a single member movable into and out of a position to lock said mechanism against operative movement, a spring tending to `move said member toward its operative position, a key actuated device having a cam-shaped portion arranged to vengage said controlling member to move the same into an inoperative position, said key actuated device and said Controlling member -having coperating parts to retain them in the positions to which they have been moved, and said bolt actuating mechanism having means to actuate said member to disconnect `,the same from said key actuated device.
13. In a lock, a bolt, a controlling device movable into and out of a position to prevent said bolt from being operated, said controlling device comprising a part having an opening therein, a key actuated device having a part adapted to enter the opening in said controlling device and move said controlling device into and retain the same in an inoperative position, and means other than said key actuated device to release said controlling device from said key actuated device.

In a lock, a bolt actuating mechanism, a controlling device having a part movable into and out of a position to lock said mechanism against operative movement, and comprising a part having an opening therein, a key actuated device having a part adapted .to enter said opening to: move said 21. In' a lock, a bolt actuating shaft, a disk mounted thereon and having a notch therein, a controlling member mounted for movement toward and from said disk and having a part adapted to enter the notch in said disk, a. spring tending to move said controlling member toward said disk, a key barrel, ai devicerigidly secured to said key barrel and rotatable therewith, said device having a projection arranged to engage a part of said controlling member to move the latter against the tension of the spring, said key actuated device and said controlling member having parts adapted to be brought inte coperating relation when said controlling member has lbeen moved into its inoperative position to retain said controlling member in said inoperative position and to prevent the return of said key barrel to its normal position, a part carried by said disk and controlled by the rotation thereof to disenga-ge said c operating parts, and means to return said key barrel to its normal position and thereby release said controlling member. v
In a lock, an actuating shaft, a disk secured thereto and having a notch therein, a controllingmemberliaving a part to be moved into and out of locking engagement with said notch, a spring tending to move said cntrolling member toward said disk, said controlling member having a bearing surface provided with a shoulder between the ends thereof, a key barrel, a plate secured to said key barrel for rotation therewith andhafvig a cam-shaped nose, a spring tending to hold said key barrel in such a position that the edge of said nose will lie substantially parallel with the bearing surface on said controlling member, said nose being so arranged that when said key barrel is rotated said controlling member will be moved against the tension of said spring until said nose and the shoulder on said bearing surface are brought into interlocking engagei'nent, and means carried by said locking disk and controlled by the rotation thereof to move said controlling member against the tension of said spring to release the part carried by said key barrel and peimit 1t to return to its normal position, thereby releasing 'said controlling member.
23. In a lock, a bolt actuating device, a rotatable locking disk yconnected with said actuating device and having a notch therein, a plate mounted for lengthwise movement toward and from said disk and having a part adapted to enter said notch, a spring to move said plate toward said disk, said plate having an opening therein, the lower edge of which is provided with a shoulder, a key barrel arranged adjacent to said opening, a device carried by said key barrel and having 'a cam-shaped nose 'extending into said opening, a spring to hold said key barrel in its normal position with said camsh'aped nose substantially parallel to the lower edge of said opening, said nose being adapted to impart lengthwise movement to said plate when said key barrel is rotated, and to be brought into interlocking engagement with said shoulder whereby both 4parts are prevented from returning to their normal positions, and a part carried by said locking disk to impart lengthwise movement to said plate and move the same out of interlocking engagement with the nose of the device carried by said key barrel to permit the same to be moved into its normal position.
24. In a lock, bolt actuating mechanism, a device to lock said bolt actuating mechanism against movement, a key barrel, a device to lock said key barrel against movement, and a single controlling member for said lecking devices arranged to be acted upon by the locking` device for said key barrel to release the bolt actuating mechanism and to be acted upon by the looking device for the bolt actuating mechanism to release the key barrel.
25. In a device of the character described, an actuating shaft, a locking disk secured thereto, a key barrel, a locking disk secured to said key barrel, and a controlling plate to alternately engage said locking disks, said plate being arranged to be actuated by said key barrel locking disk to release said shaft, and to be actuatedby said shaft locking disk to release said key barrel.
26. In a lock, a bolt actuating mechanism, a device to lock said bolt actuating mechanism against movement, a key barrel, a device to lock said barrel against movement, and controlling mechanism to alternately vengage said locking devices, said controlling mechanism being arranged to be acted upon by the locking device for lsaid key barrel to move the same into a position to release the bolt actuating mechai'iism, and to be acted upon by the locking device for said bolt actuating ymechanisn'i to move thesame into a position to release the key barrel.
27. In a lock, bolt actuating mechanism comprising a rotary part having movement in one direction only and having a notch in the periphery thereof, a controlling device movable into and out 'of the notch in said rotary part, a key actuated device to engage said vcontrolling device and move the vsame out of said notch and retain the same in its inoperative position, said rotary part having a cam shaped portion arranged in advance of said notch to engage said controlling device and release the same from said key actuated device before said notch is again brought into a position to receive said controlling member.

In a lock, bolt actuating mechanism comprising a rotary part having a plurality of notches` in the periphery thereof and capable of rotation in one direction only, a controlling device having a part adapted to enter one of said notches, means for retaining said part of said controlling` device normally in one of said notches, a key actuated device to actuate said controlling device to move said part thereof out of said notch to permit the rotation of said member7 said controlling device and said key actuated device having parts cooperatingto retain them in the positions to which they have been moved7 and said rotary part having a camshaped portion arranged in advance of each notch to engage said controlling device and impart movement thereto for disconnecting the saine from said hey actuated device before the next notch therein is brought into position to receive said part of said controlling device.
