UN ED STATES PATENT orrion.
1 V ErmEsr x. ARMSTRONG, or'MI LERsBURe, OHIO.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, ERNEST K. ARM- a citizen of the United States, residing at Millersburg, in thecounty of Holmes and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Pins, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hair pins, and more particularly to that class or type which is formed of a single length of wire bent upon itself to form a two-armed or forked hair pin, such as is in common use, the present embodiment of this invention being designed not only as a substitute for but an improvement on such pins, as will hereinafter more fully appear. The primary object of the invention is to provide a generally improved hair pin of this class, which will be exceedingly simple and eflicient in use.
A further object of the invent1on is to improve the construction and arrangement of the arms or prongs of the improved pin whereby the improved pin may be more readily inserted, as well as removed, from the hair of the wearer.
A still further object is the provision of improved anchor shoulder members terminating in spaced prongs, the common planes of the latter being elf-set to one side of the common plane of the shank or handle memhere, the shank shoulder and prong members being of similar form and arrangement so as to extend parallel to each other when in closed or compressed position through the improved operating loop head, thereby greatly facilitating the insertion and removal of the hair pin in actual service.
A still further object is the provision of an improved handle or operating loop head whereby the arms or prongs may be readily compressed into parallel relation to each other for insertion in the hair of the wearer, and after being inserted may be readily released or expanded for being anchored or securely retained therein, and when desired may be compressed into released or parallel relation to each other for ready removal from the hair.
With the above mentioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination or parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one of its embodiments in the accompanying Specification of Letters Patent.
HAIR-PIN.
Patented July 8, 1919.
Application filed October 1c. 1918. Serial No. 258.477.
Fig. 2, a similar view, illustrating the manner in which the arms or prongs are compressed into parallel relation to each other through the improved operating loop head in the act of inserting the same into or removing the same from the hair of the wearer.
Similar numerals of reference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
The improved hair pin comprises a single length of wire bent upon itself midway between its ends forming a handle loop head 1, carrying spaced arm or shank members 1, the latter terminating in anchor shoulders 1', extending in a like direction and to one side, said shoulder members terminating in off-set prongs 1, the common axial planes of said olf-set prongs 1, being at one side of the common axial plane of said spaced arm or shank members 1, as shown most clearly in the drawings.
As a means of causing the shank shoulder and prong members to normally overlie or extend parallel with each other when closed or compressed through the medium of the operating handle loop head 1, as shown most clearly in Fig. 2, of the drawings, for the ready insertion and removal of the hair pin in the hair 2, of the wearer, the shank shoulder and prong members are of like form and extend in a like direction, and it will be obvious upon reference to Fig. 1, that when the shank shoulder and prong members are released by the handle loop head and permitted to expand into their normal expanded or anchored position, as shown in Fig. 1, of the drawings, the anchor shoulders 1", will interlock with the hair so as not only to prevent the outward movement of the hair pin, but securely maintain the same in proper position as against inward movement.
It will also be observed that the handle loop head 1, is of such form and arrangement with respect to the shank and prong members as to enable the latter to be readily manipulated through the thumb and finger of the hand, as shown most clearly in Fig. 2, of the draWings, such handle loop head being of convenient form to be readily grasped by the hand in the act of insertion and. .removal.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection With the accompanying draws ings, the operation and advantages'of my invention Will be readily understood.
Having thus describedone of the embodiments of my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1...A hair pin, comprising shank members terminating at one end in a prong operating loop head and at the other in anchor shoulders terminating in off-set prongs having their common axial plane disposed Wholly at one side of andsubstantially parallel With the common axial plane of said shank members, said shank shoulderv and ron members overla inc and extendin a H b parallel with each other When compressed by said operating loop head for insertion into and removal from the hair of'the wearer.
2. A hair pin, comprising shank members terminating at one end in an enlarged prong F operatlng loop head and at the other in an chor shoulders the latter being spaced a substantial distance from said loop head and ter- 'minating in ofi-set prongs having their common axial plane disposed Wholly at one side of and substantially parallel With the common axial plane of said shank members, said shank and prong members normally extend- In testimony whereof I. have afiixed my signature.
