To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RENE JEAN GAMILLE TAMPIER, citizen of the Republic of France, and resident of Boulogne-sul seine, France, (post-office address 1 Rue de Bellevue,) have invented a new and useful Valve Mec anism, which improvements are fully set forth in. the following specification.
The present invention has reference to valve mechanisms; and it proposes, briefly, an improved mechanism of the general nature indicated which is designed primarily for use in connection with a system of piping comprising two separate supply pipes communicating with a common .discharge pipe, the several pipes having individual controlling valves associated therewith. The improvements involved in the invention relate particularly to the operating means for the several controlling valves, and comprehend an arrangement in which the valves for the two supply pipes may be opened either simultaneously or, selectively, independently of each other; and in which said valves, as well as the valve for the discharge pipe, may be actuated at a point remote from that where the pipes are located. The improved mechanism as a whole may be employed as ameans for controlling the supply and .discharge of any desired liquids, but is especially applicable to the delivery or dispensing of gasolene. V
The accompanying drawing discloses one form of construction which the invention may take in practice, and therein:

The pipe connections between the source or sources of liquid supply and the pipes 2 and 2 form tion, and for that reason are omitted, it being considered sufiicient for all present purposes to show merely the afore-mentioned all three pipes being here from any suitable source of' no part of the inveninlets. Also, it is to be understood that such source or sources of supply may have any desired location with relation to the dispensing mechanism, and may be remote from or close to it.

This pipe 7 functions as the discharge pipe of the system, as subsequently explained, and communicates with the supply pipes 2, 2, by means of the horizontal tubular connections 6, 6 (Fig. 3), and is provided with an outlet 9.
he supply pipes 2 and 2 are identical in construction and equipment, and each is provided intermediate its ends, with an internal construction or valve seat 3 which is slightly beveled, as shown in Fig. 1 and in which a correspondingly-shaped valve 10 is adapted to seat. The valve 10 is loosely mounted in the open, lower end of a hollow, cylindrical case 11, so as to have a slight play vertically, and projects both above and below the edge of said case as shown, but is normally pressed outwardly of the case by means of a spring 12 disposed therewithin. The valve seat and case in each supply pipe are located above the corresponding inlet 1 or 1, so that the liquid, on entering the lower portion of the pipe, must ascend through the valve seat or opening 3 before it can be discharged through the outlet connection 6 or 6 into the pipe 7 the said outlet connection being located above the valve seat in position to benormally closed by the case or cylinder 11. One of the supply pipes may also be provided with an additional outlet 28 (Fig. 4), through which the liquid may be directly discharged, instead of passing into the pipe 7, this opening being likewise under the control of the adjacent valve and valve case and being normally closed thereby.
It is an object of the invention, as previously stated, to provide mechanism whereby either of the two valves may be opened and the other closed, or both of them opened simultaneously, as may be desired. According to the construction illustrated, there is secured to the top of each valve case or cylinder a vertical rod 13, which is pivotally connected at its upper end by means of a pair of short links 14 to the outer end of the adjacent arm 16 or 16 of a lever 15. -The latter has the form of an inverted T, and is fulcruined at the intersection of its stem and cross-piece portions, the two halves of the latter portion or member forming the aforesaid arms 16 and 16. The support tO (Fig. 2) whereon said lever is fulcrumed, is in the nature of a rigid fork or bracket, which is located between the two supply pipes and may be secured to either of them in any desired manner. The valve rods 13 extend through stutling boxes ll containing packing 18 of some suitable character, which is disposed between upper and lower washers 19 and 17, the former of which is adapted to be forced toward the latter by means of an adjustable nut 20 to compress the interposed packing.
The upper or free end of the stem of the lever 15 is pivotally connected to an operating device 9. This device may be of any suitable or desired character, but is preferably of such length as to render it possible to manipulate the lever from a point a considerable distance away from the piping system. The lever itself, due to its peculiar shape and mounting as above described, moves in much the same way as a walking beam and serves to move both valve rods endwise at the same time, but in opposite directions. In consequence, the cylinder 11 connected to the ascending rod will be lifted with that rod, thereby raising the valve 10 from its seat 3 'and uncovering the outlet (3 or G as the case may be; while the descending rod will lower the cylinder connected to it and will cover the other outlet, the valve entering its seat and being pressed thereinto by the action of the spring 12.
Similar devices areprovided in connection with the discharge pipe to control the delivery of the liquid through the outlet 9, and comprise a valve 21, which works in a seat or opening 8 arranged in said pipe a slight distance above said outlet, a cylinder or case 24, by which the valve is carried, a valve rod 25, a bell-crank lever 27 and an operating device 43, which latter is likewise of considerable length in order to permit the valve to be manipulated from a distance. The valve 21 bears a depending, tapered extension 22, which acts in somewhat the same manner as a needle valve; and said valve and its extension are subjected to the pressure of a spring 44 contained within the cylinder 24, and are, accordingly, loosely connected to the lower end of the cylinder so as to be capable of a slight movement independently of and relative to the cylinder. A slotted head 23 is provided on the valve so as to enable it to be detached from the cylinder and fixed in the seat 8 when the mechanism is dismantled. The valve rod extends: through a stufiing box 45 provided in the upper portion of the pipe and containing packing 46 which is interposed between upformer per and lower washers 47 and 48, the

The operation. is substantially as follows: The device 42 which may be either a rod or a wire, is preferably connected at its far end to a handle in the nature of an indicating finger (not shown), which moves in one direction or the other across a suitably-marked dial, according as liquid is to be drawn off from either pipe 2 or 2. This finger or handle, on being moved in the proper direction and to the required extent, serves to rock the T-shaped lever 15 correspondingly, so that the arm 16 or 16 of saidlever will lift the associated valve cylinder 11 and thereby raise the valve 10 carried thereby from its seat 8, the other lever arm lowering the valve cylinder and valve connected to it. Liquid will then flow from the pipe 2 or 2, the valve of which was just opened, through the pipe connection 6 or 6 into the pipe 7. he device 43 associated with the latter pipe is thereafter operated to open the discharge valve 21, 22, whereupon the liquid flows out of said pipe through the outlet 9. If it is desired to open both valves at the same time, the lever is moved to a position in which both its arms are horizontal.
In the modification or development illustrated in Fig. 5, the pipe 2 is shown as provided with an outlet 29, which is located below the inlet 1, and which has positioned in front of it a bored thimble or washer 30, the arrangement being such that instead of a body of liquid being trapped in the bottom of the pipe, the liquid will flow out through the openings 30 and 30 and thence into and through the outlet 29, whence it may be returned to the source of supply, or be otherwise disposed of. The diameters of the openings 80" and 30 may vary, with the result that the pressure of the liquid below the valve 10* will be proportionately changed. "This construction may, of course, be applied to the pipe 2 as well as to the pipe 2, and to that pipe instead of to pipe 2.
I claim as myinventionz 1. In a system of the character described, the combination of a pair of supply pipes each having an inlet and an outlet for the passage of liquid therethrough; a valve seat ineach pipeadjacen't the outlet thereof; a movable case mounted in each pipe directly above the valve seat; a. valve mounted in the lower end of each case and adapted to fit in the corresponding valve seat; a spring in each case to force the repacking.

In a system of the character described, the combination of a pair of supply pipes each having an inlet and an outlet for the passage of liquid therethrough; a valve seat in each pipe adjacent the outlet thereof; a movable case mounted in each pipe directly above the valve seat; a valve mounted in the lower end of each case and adapted to fit in the coi'respond'ing valve seat; a spring in each case to force the respective valve outwardly thereof and press it into its seat; an inverted T-shaped lever fulcrumed between said pipes at the intersection of its stem and cross-piece; a member pivotally connecting each arm of its cross-piece of said lever with the adjacent valve case, so as to raise one case and lower the other when the stem of the lever is shifted to either side from a vertical position, and to maintain both valve cases in raised position when shifted from either of its side positions to said vertical position; and an operating device for said lever.
3. In a system of the character described, the combination of a pair of vertical supply pipes each having an inlet for the passage. of liquid thereinto; a vertical discharge pipe disposed parallel with the supply pipes and having a liquid outlet; an outlet connection between each supply pipe and the discharge pipe; a valve in each supply pipe to control the passage of the liquid through the corresponding outlet connection to the discharge pipe; a carrier for each valve; an

In a system of the character described, the combination of a pair of supply pipes each having an inlet and an outlet for the passage of liquid therethrough; a valve seat in each pipe adjacent the outlet thereof; a movable case mounted in each pipe directly above the valve seat; a valve mounted in the lower end of each case and adapted to fit in the corresponding valve seat; a spring in each case to force the respective valve outwardly thereof, and press it into its seat; an operating element connected with bot-h valve cases so as to simultaneously raise one of them and lower the other when actuated; a discharge pipe disposed adjacent the supply pipes and with which the outlets therefrom communicate, said discharge pipe also having an outlet; and valve means for controlling the passage of the liquid from the discharge pipe through its outlet, at least one of the supply pipes having an additional outlet which is normally closed by the valve case in that pipe and which is opened when said valve case is raised, thereby permitting the liquid to flow directly out through the additional outlet.
