To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, BARToLoMnW Mo- INTIRE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reciprocating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification. v
My invention relates to improvements in longitudinal and lateral reciprocating mechanism Vand is especially adapted to operate in conjunction with that type of eX- cavating machines set forth in my application for Letters Patent of the United States,

First, to provide an improved longitudinal andlateral reciprocating mechanism to operate in conjunction with the excavating machine referred to;
Second, to provide an improved mechanism of the character described adapted 4to provide an intermittent forward movement 1 and a reciprocating lateral movement;
Third, to provide an improved device of the character described Ywherein the fre- Y quency degree of the forwardintermittent movement may be altered and regulated,

fication, the same parts of the excavating machine hereinbefore referred to, in so far as they appear in the drawings, bear the same reference numerals as in the said referred to specification in order that said parts may be better located and understood.
Referring tothe drawings the numeral 6 is used to designate a power shaftl drivenV from any suitable source of energy not shown. Theshaft 6 terminates in a bevel gear 12 .to operate a variable speed transmission composed of a shaft 31, rigidly connected to the worm gear 12, andzhaving with and drive gears 36, 37 and 38 respectively on a counter-shaft 39. These gears may .be shifted, by means of any suitable shifting dev ice, not shown, to provide various gear ratios between the gears mentioned whereby various speeds may be imparted to thereto av pairof diametrically opposed cams 42 arranged to engage a roller 43 and therebyv longitudinally reciprocate a sleeve 44 upon the end of which said roller 43 is mounted. The sleeve 44 has slidably mounted therein one end of a rod 45 provided with a slot 46 to engage a lateral key 47 secured to the sleeve 44.

pawl 52 is mounted betweenthe cheek plates 50 to engage the ratchet 51 and is provided with an extension.` 53 which is engagedby an' arm` 54 on a lever 55 to di-sengage said pawl 52 from `the ratchet 51 in af manner hereinafter ,more fully described.
In operation, when the shaft 39 is rotated through the medium of the variabley speed mechanism the diametrically opposed cams en'gage'thexroller 43 and longitudinally reciprocate the sleeve 44 `and thenrod' 45 conneoted' thereto thereby causingthe pawl 52 to. engage the ratchetl 51'and. intermittently rota-te .thel shaft 23 and propelV the frame 1 forward throughzthe shaft 23, pinions .24 thereon andl wheel 28:.
Thesleeve 44 is slidably held in alinement with the cams 42 by means of parallel *guidey plates 59 depending from and formed integral with a cross bar 56 secured to the under side of the main frame 1.
The frequency of theforward movements is adjusted by means ofthe variable speed mechanism hereinbefore described. range or degree of said forward movement Vmay be regulated and` adjusted by means of a link 57'fro1n which the sleeve 44 is suspended', the upper end of said link 57 being in turn suspended from a threaded rod 'Z3V rotatably mounted in a nut 74 in turn rotatably mounted ina sleeve 75 secured to the upper'end of a vertically disposed standard 76 secured to the main frame 1, theupper end of the nut 7 4 is provided with a sui-table hand wheel 77. By rotating the hand wheel 77 the nut 74 raises or lowers the threaded rod'73 to raise or lower the sleeve 44 to bring the roller 43I thereon into juxtaposition with theecenter of the shaft 39 and the cams 42' thereon, thereby increasing or decreasing the period of contact and consequently the amo-unt of movement of said cams 42 with the roller 43 and sleeve 44.
By means of this arrangement the degree I of longitudinal movement of the sleeve 44 and-rod 45 and consequently the arc of rota-` tion-.0f the ratchet 51 may be regulated and adjusted." In order to return the rod 45 and sleeve'v 44 'after veach movement the cheek plates 50 are provided with a counter weight `'2'8"asdisclosed in Figs. 1 ,and 2 of the` drawings.
It is'lobvious'from the foregoing that as thecamsg42 rotate the sleeve 44 and od 45 will bemoved longitudinally. rShould -the forwardmovernent of the entire lmachine meet with any undue resistance the movementof'the cam 42 operating on the sleeve toothed sectors'72 which are engaged by TheV 44will compress the spring 495thereby re-Y lieving the mechanism of any strain which might tendto fracture it.` The tension of the said spring. 49 may `be regulated bythe nuts 81 as disclosed inFig. 4 ofthe drawings. T his spring 49 also operates as a shock absorber, thereby greatly reducing vibra-tion and shock-which might otherwise tively on the front end of the supeij'frame 62 and the main frame 1 betweenwhich bracesare mounted rollers 66.- The rear end of the frame is'slidably mounted on a square shaft? secured to: the main frame 1. y

During the forward intermittent movel ment by means of the pawl and ratchet 51 and 52 should it bei desired foranypurpose to temporarily arrest said .forward move.- Y ment the same may be accomplished by operating the release 114J Vpivotally mounted on the vlink 57 having aV connecting rod 1155 Op* 130 f eratively connective to the lever 55 whose extension 54 will then engage the extension 53 of the pawl 52 and disengage the same from the ratchet 51. When it is desired to resume the forward movement same may be accomplished by releasing the member 114 which will in turn release the pawl 52 so that the longitudinal reciprocations of the rod. will operate said ratchet 51.
It is obvious from the foregoing that I have provided an improved mechanism whereby av superframe may be laterally reciprocated as well 'as improved means for regulating the frequency of said movement. Also improved means for moving entire mechanism forward intermittently as well as means for altering and regulating the frequency as well as the range or degree of said forward movement.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A device of the character described comprising a main frame; traction wheels supporting the main frame; a superframe slidably mounted to move laterally upon the main frame; a longitudinal crank shaft rotatably mounted in the main frame; connecting rods operatively connecting the crank shaft to the superframe whereby said frame may be reciprocated laterally; means for rotating the crank shaft at various speeds to regulate the frequency of the recip rocations; and means for operating the traction Wheels intermittently.l
2. A device of the character described comprising a main frame; traction wheels supporting the main frame; a superframe slidably mounted to move laterally upon the main frame; a longitudinal crank shaft rotatably mounted in the main frame; connecting rods operatively connecting the crank shaft to the superframe whereby said frame may be reciprocated laterally; means for rotating the crank shaft at various speeds to regulate the frequency of the reciprocations; and means for operating the traction wheels intermittently; and means for regulating the range and frequency of the intermittent movement of the traction wheels.

A device of the character described comprising a main frame; traction wheels supporting the main frame; a super-frame slidably mounted to move laterally upon the m'ain frame; a longitudinal crank shaft rotatably mounted in the main frame; connecting rods operatively connecting the crank shaft to the Superf-rame whereby said frame may be reciprocated laterally; means for rotating the crank shaft at various speeds to regulate the frequency of the reciprocations; and means for operating the traction wheels intermittently; and means for regulating the range and frequency of the intermittent movement of the traction wheels; and means for temporarily releasing the traction wheel operating means.

A device of the character described comprising a main frame; traction wheels mounted. to support the main frame; a super-frame slidably mounted to reciprocate laterally upon the main frame; a crank shaft rotatably mounted within the main frame; connecting rods operatively connected to the crank shaft and to the superframe whereby said frame may be reciprocated laterally when the shaft is rotated; a counter shaft rotatably mounted within the main frame; and operatively connected to the traction wheels; a ratchet Wheel mounted upon the counter shaft; a pawl mounted upon said shaft to engage the ratchet; a pair of cams rotatably mounted within the main frame; a rod operatively connected to the pawl and arranged to be reciprocated longitudinally by the cams; and a variable speed transmission unit operatively connected to the crank shaft and to the cams whereby lateral reciprocations may be imparted with varying frequency to the superframe and intermittent movements may be imparted to the main frame by means of the cams, pawl and ratchet.
