Be it known that I, MILTON F. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F orgingfBlocks, of which the fo-llowing is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in forging blocks for pivoted rotary hammers, the pecularities of which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide means for readily repointing and redressing pivoted rotary hammers, particularly the style of hammer known as the Ideal This style consists of a fiat bar, relatively much wider than thick, and curved forward at its operative end in a plane parallel to the greatest dimension of the bar so as to produce a curved proj eoting point, and with the outer end beveled to l5 degrees or more from a squared end, to give the necessary clearance to the hammer. This hammer wears oft' so that the operative point is rounding, and it is necessary to repoint it by heating and redressing the end and drawing forward the point again, by suitable means. Such means I have provided as shown in the accompanying drawing, on which like reference letters indicate corresponding parts, and whereon Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional elevation through a block illustrating my invention; Fig. 2 a back view of the same; and Fig. 3, a front view of the same.
The letter A designates a base, liaring out from a standard or block B extending upward from said base and substantially rectangular, but with the back end preferably chamfered to an inclination of about 28 degrees with the vertical as indicated in Fig. l. The top is substantially horizontal, but may be slightly inclined downward toward the front. In the top and the inclined back end of the standard or block, is a groove C rectangular at the bottom, and adapted to receive the lesser dimension of an Ideal hammer of the kind described. The groove is curved at the throat D where it changes Specification of Letters Patent.

from the top to the back of the block, and a vwearing insert of comparatively hard steel E, is preferably inserted at this point, but may be dispensed with.
The bottom of the hammer being curved as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, is provided with a curved nearly semi-circular socket block F at the bottom of said groove C, and this block is adjustable by means of shims G, or otherwise, so as to raise the socket when hammers of a shorter length are being redressed; and vice versa.
In the manufacture of this style of hammer, the thickness of the hammer or its lesser dimension, likewise varies, and I have provided the groove C of width sufficient to take the thickest hammer ordinarily redressed, and then adapt the said groove to a lesser width by means of an insert or shim H, Fig. 2, of variable thickness according to the thickness of the fiat bar of the hammer to be redressed.
The hammer to be repointed is first heated at the operative end and then laid in the groove C while the stock is drawn forward in the top groove over the curved throat, by blows of a Sledge hammer; the hammer being redressed is then taken from the groove and any excess width at the point is reduced, and any excess length of said point (measured from the center of the pivot hole at the -bottom of the hammer,) is cut off by a chisel. The pivoted hammer is then retempered, and sharpened by grinding on an emery wheel.
I claim:
l. A forging block comprising a block having a substantially horizontal top, and a back that is inclined downward and backward from said top, and having a groove in said top and back,-the junction of the upper and back groove being curved,-and an insert of relatively harder material provided at said curve.
2. A forging block comprising a block substantially horizontal at the top and inclined downward and backward at the rear end, and having a groove extending along the top and back adapted for reception of a pivoted hammer of the style described, and a socket block curved at the upper surface and fitting Within said groove at the back and bottom, substantially as described.
3. A forging block comprising a block having the rear face inclined as described, a groove in said rea-r face and top, adapted to receive a .hammer of the class described, and a flat shim H inserted in said groove at the back, to adjust the Width of said groove to l0 the thickness of the hammer being dressed.
