To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Kanon KEMPNY, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Chio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements lin Scaffolds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in scaifolds and has as its principal objects the provision of means whereby one or more persons may be supported from the exterior of a building in such manner as to be able to perform operations thereon.
Another object is to provide scaffolds which may be conveniently and safely operated and which are comprised of few and simple parts.
These and other like obects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, which form a material part of this specification and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing a scaffold made in accordance with the invention, and indicating one of its applications.
Fig. 2 is a fragmental perspective View showing a metallic platform having an outer downturned edge employed in connection with a scaffold according to the present invention.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 4.

In the embodiment shown suitable vertical supports 10, as the sides of the frame of a window, have attached by pivots 11, a pair of bars 12 of any desired length, the same being connected together by rails 14, arranged in pairs, the rails of each pair being interengaged by angularly disposed braces 15, secured by rivets 16 at the ends,
and adapted to support a metallic platform 18, having an outerdownturned edge 19, engageable with the outer rail, by means of which the plate is held in position.
Also pivoted to the vertical supports 10, by pins 17, contiguous to the inner ends of the bars 12, are links 20, containing longitudinal slots 21, the 'same extending nearly to the outer free ends of the links, other similar links 22 being pivotally connected by the pins 23 to the outer ends of the bars 12 and containing relatively short slots 24, through which pass bolts 25 which engage other links 26, pivotally attached by pins 27 to the supports 10, at a point remote from the pivotal points of the bars 12 and of the links 20, the bolts 25 also passing through the slots 21 so as to allow the links 20 to move freely.
Connected at the pivotal points 23, are cords 30, running over pulleys 31, pivoted on the pins 27, and extending downward along the support to studs 32, which secure the ends, thereby holding the bars 12, and platform horizontally. When it is desired to fold the platform the cords 30 may be drawn, as indicated in Fig. 1, and the joints at the pivot bolts 25, may be broken, so that the bolts will move in the slots 21, the links 22 and 26 folding inwardly as the bolts move as indicated.
In order to hold the rails 14, in position with reference to the bars 12, the lower edges of the bars are formed with recesses 35 adapted to receive tongues 36, formed on the ends of the rails 14 which are thereby slidably engaged together.
On the lower inside edges of the bars 12, are formed a plurality of teeth 38, slidable Y in the recesses 34 and engageable by pivotal dogs 40, held normally against the teeth by the flat bent springs 41, secured to the rails 14. Thus it is possible to release the dogs by actuating the extending pin 42, and to 'adjust the position of the rails 14, longitudinally of the bars 12.
The rack and dog adjustment of the lattice bars with respect to the horizontal supports is intended? for allowing a ready adjustment of the lattice work closer or more distant from each other according to the weight to be supported by the platform 18 and to the position of such load near the ends of said platform or on its central part, so that even the heaviest load will always be properly supported and the danger of breaking through the platform will be effectively avoided.
In the form shown in Fig. S the scaffold is adapted to be used in building constructions as indicated in the drawings.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y In a scaffold, the combination with a pair of opposed vertical supports, a bar hingedly engaged to each of said supports, means for supporting said bars when extended horizontally, means for raising or lowering said bars, cross elements engaged between said rails, said Cross elements comprising a pair of bars having lattice members therebetween and containing recesses engageable with said bars, racks formed upon said bars and slidable within said recesses, dogs engageable with the teeth of said racks, said dogs being pivoted to the ends of saidcross elements, means for holding said dogs in engagement with the teeth oi said racks, means for releasing said dogs and a platform disposed over said cross elements.
