WILLIAM H. MOCARTY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
. GATE-CLOSER... I
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedJune 3, 19 19.
Application filed September 13, 1918. SeriaI No. 253,869.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Mo- CARTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gate-Closers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in the class of closers used, in connection with gates and more especially with farmgates formed of fence-wire and adapted to extend between the gate-posts to close the gateway, for stretching the wire gate in closing it, thereby to lend to it a taut and tidy appearance, and for securing it in its closed position.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing a Wire gate between the end-posts of a wire fence and provided with my improved closing means, and Fig. 2 is a plan section on line 2-2, Fig. l, and enlarged.
The gateway-forming end-posts of the wire fencing 3 are shown at at and 5. The wire forming the gate 6 is represented as a continuation of the wire of the fence 3 across the post 4, to which it is shown to be fastened, for hanging it, by staples at 7. It is usual practice to reinforce a gate of the present kind at its free edge through the medium of a binder or spreader, shown in the form of a bar 8, about which the ends of the longitudinal gate-wires are wrapped, as represented. V 7
My improved device comprises a link 9, shown of elongated and curved form, to be secured to the post 5 (though it might be to the bar 8) near its upper end,'as by an eye-bolt 10 extending through the post and fastened by a nut 11; a bent lever 12, of general S-shape on a link 13 passing through the lever near one end thereof to afford a fulcrum at a point to provide a shorter and a longer lever-arm, and a link 14 connected with the link 13. It is pre-' ferred to furnish with the fastener a bolt 15 terminating in a ring 16 to be secured in r the post 5 near its lower end, as shown, for
understood, however, the link 1 1 may be on the post 5 and the bolt 10 on the bar 8.
To close the gate, it is first pulled toward its position of closure until the bar 8 may, by slanting it downwardly, be introduced at its lower end into the ring 16; and the bar is brought into proximity with the adjacent post sufiicient to enable the shorter arm of the lever to be inserted through the link 9, whereupon, by turning the lever on its fulcrum, afforded by the link 13, to the posiits closed position, from which it may be readily opened on turning the lever in the opposite direction and disengaging it from the link 9, and also withdrawing the bar 8 from the ring 16. V
I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of construction thus specifically shown and described, and I do not intend by illustrating a single specific embodiment of my invention to be limited thereto, my intention being in the following claims to claim protection upon all the novelty there may be in my invention as fully as the state of the art will permit.
I claim 1. A gate-closer to extend between the free end of a gate and the adjacent gatepost, comprising a series of links, separable between the ends of the series, to be attached at said ends respectively to said post and gate-end, and a lever fulcrumed between its ends in one of the two separable links to form shorter and longer lever-arms, and in sertible at its shorter arm into the other separable link to connect the link-series and adapt the lever to be turned on its fulcrum to pull the gate into closed position.
2. A gate-closer to extend between the free end of a gate and the adjacent gatepost, comprising a series of links, separable between the ends of the series, to be attached at said ends respectively to said post and gate-end, and a bent lever fulcrumed between its ends in one of the two separable '3. A gate-closor to cooperate with a gatepost and a Wire gate hung to close toward iid post, comprising a "bolt secured in theupper part of the post and carrying a link, a link hung on the free end of the gate and carrying a second link, and a lever fu1 crun'ied between its ends on said second link to form shorter and longer lever-arms and lnsertible at its shorter arni into said bolt carried link to adapt the leverto be turned on its fulcrum to pull the gate into closed v position.
4. A gate-closer to cooperate with a gatepost and "a Wire gate hungtoolose' toward into said boltcarried link to adapt the lever to be turned on its fulcrum to pull the into closed position.
WILLIAM H. Mc-CARTY.
