To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MIHALY LUTZKY, a subject of the King of Hungary, resident of Detroit, county of Wayne, and State of lilichigan, have invented certain new--'a1id useful Improvements in Heaters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in heaters such as are used in dwellings, stores and the like, in order to provide a heating system for the same.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a heater capable of producing a circulation of steam or hot water by the economical combustion of fuel in direct connection with boilers or tanks so arranged that fuel may be moved to or from the boilers to increase or decrease the heating of the same.

A further object is to provide a heater in which the returns are carried to the boiler and which require little attention in operation after the supply tank has been once filled to its proper capacity.

These and other like ob ects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanyingdrawing, formingamaterial part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing a heater made in accordance with the invention.

In the drawing, the numeral 10, designates a platform resting upon legs or supports 11, having a furnace 12, at its front end. The furnace shown is substantially rectangular, except for the diagonal-upper front portion 14, in which there are a plurality of openings covered by doors 15, having operating knobs 16, and engaged with the front part of the furnace by the hinges 17 an ash box 18, extends below the furnace provided with knobs 19, by which its front cover may be withdrawn.

Formed in the bottom wall of the furnace is a longitudinal opening 20, rearward of which extend permanent grate bars 22, having their front sections 23, hingedly engaged to a rod 24, provided with an operating handle 25, on the end of a lever so that the front portion of the grate bars can be raised when desired.

Mounted on the bottom of the furnace are a plurality of boilers 28, the same being entirely inclosed by the walls ofthe furnace,

so that all the heat arising from the fuel burned upon the gratesis transmitted di rectly tothem; Smoke and gases from the furnace pass out through the flue 30, com- -municating With which is a duct 31, bent upward at the rear 32, and entering a chimney so as to provide a draft for the furnace.

A supply tank 35, having a flanged head 36, is mounted upon supports 37, at the rear of the platform 10, the head having an opening normally closed by the screw 38, by means of which it can be filled, the contents showing through the gage glass 39, secured to the side of the tank in the ordinary manner.

Extending outwardly from the lower side of the water tank 85, is a pipe 40 leading to a rectangular distributing tank 41, of considerable area, extending substantially across the entire width of the platform, and resting upon supports 42, the tank having a beveled lower side and connected by pipes 44, at its larger end, directly with the boilors 28, so that the same are furnished with a constant supply of water.

Mounted on top of the distributing tank 41, by supports 45, is a horizontally disposed circular tank 48, communicating through a pipe 49, with a header 50, in which are engaged pipes 51, connected by suitable fittings with vertical pipes 52, extending upward from the boilers 28.

Arranged on the upper portion of the tank 48, which is intended to carry saturated steam, is a pressure gage 54, while centrally of the tank is a safety valve 55. Extending outward from the rear end of the tank 48, is a pipe 5'7, supplying relatively dry steam to the horizontal supply pipe 58, controlled by the valve 60, in the other opening of which is a pipe 61, leading to the various radiators or heaters throughout the building.

In operation, the tank having been filled to its proper height with water through the inlet 38, and a fire started in the furnace 12, steam will be generated, and if the valve 60 be opened, steam will pass through to the radiators.

Fuel is entered through the openings controlled by the doors 15, and the fire may be started within the furnace, and should it be desired to increase the heat, the handle 25 may be operated, raising the front portion of the grate bars so as to throw the fuel into immediate contact with the boilers, thereby increasing their steaming capacities, While ordinarily the handle 25 is in a forward position and the grate bars 23, rest upon the bottom of the furnace covering the opening' 20.

Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a heater, the combination With a furnace having vertical. tubular boilers therein, of a plurality of grate bars below said boilers, and extending toward the front of said furnace, a second plurality of grate bars hingedly engaged at the ends of said stationary grate bars, and means for operating said hinged grate bars in order to force the fuel against said boilers, or to aline the same in the plane of said stationary grate bars.
