Be it known that 1, CHARLES A.H1Nsn1LL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Fixtures for Electric Lamps, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to such improvements and consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and subsequently claimed.

Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a view in front elevation of an adjustable electric lamp-fixture embodying one form of my invention.

My invention relates to fixtures for adjustably supporting incandescent electric lamps adjacent to a work-table or bench, and is particularly adapted for use in factories where a considerable number of such lamps are arranged longitudinally of a table permitting them to be mounted upon a common support such as a pipe which forms a conduit for the electric-light-wires.

Certain objects of the invention are to facilitate the mounting of the fixtures upon such a supporting-pipe; and to provide. a simple and eficient means for holding in supply-wires therefor.

Referring to Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive of the drawings, 1 is the bracket-member of the fixture, and 2 is a clamp-disk similar in formto, and complementary to the upper end, '3, of the bracket-member, these complementary members being of circular form and centrally apertured to receive a clamping screw-bolt, 4, whereby they are adapted to be drawn toward each other.

The clamp thus formed by thecomplementary members, ,2 and '3, is adapted to embrace and hold in adjusted position a length, 7, of metal tubing or pipe 'of comparatively small diameter, such as will serve as. a supporting-arm for an incandescent electric lamp-socket, lamp and shade-holder, and also form, a conduit for the electric- To better adapt the device to thus clamp and hold such a pipe, 7,a'nd also. to provide for a wide range ,of adjustment of the pipe, 7, I interpose between the complementary clamping members, 2 andB, apair of clamping washers, 8, centrally apertured to receive the bolt, 4, and provided on their inner sides with complementary grooves, adaptedto receive and form a seat for the pipe, 7.

The inner sides of the clamping washers, 8, are further cut away along the outer side of the grooves, 9, to the periphery to provide an open slot, l0, leadin to the seat for the pipe, 7 which is forms by the complementary grooves, 9.

This construction permits the pipe to be readily inserted without taking the clampmembers apart, it being necessary merely to loosen the bolt, 4, until the washers, 8, can be sufficiently separated to permit the pipe,

its seat,- after which the parts can be tightly clamped together by setting up the screw-bolt, 4.

\Vhile the bolt, 4, is loosened, the pipe, 7, can be slid longitudinally within its seat in the washers, 8, as well as rocked or rotated about its axis to secure different positions of adjustment; and the pipe, 7, can be fur ther adjusted in different angular positions relatively to the fixture by rocking or rotatively movin the washers, 8, about the axis of the clamping-bolt, 4.

In practice it is often desirable to mount a series of fixtures upon a long pipe extending along a work-bench or table, which pipe forms a conduit for the main electric-supplywires.

I have shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 a preferred form of bracketbase adapted to be readily applied to, and detached from, and adjusted upon, a pipe which base is adapted to be used with various forms of support for the lamp-carrying arm.

This base-portion is substantially U- shaped, forming an approximately semi-circular seat, 11, for the supporting-pipe, 12, the walls of which seat diverge or flare out wardly to form a lateral opening, 13, slightly larger than the diameter of the pipe, 12, per mitting the bracket-base to be readily ap plied to and withdrawn from the pipe, 12, by a sidewise or lateral movement.

The lamp-arm-supporting mechanism is erected from or supported by the upper portion of the U-shaped base, while the lower portion of the base is provided with a screwthreaded aperture adapted to receive a set screw, 14, which can be screwed inwardly to reduce the width of the outlet, 13, from the seat, 11, to a distance less than the diameter of the pipe, 12, and can be forced into tight engagement with the pipe, 12, to firmly clamp the pipe within and against the seat, 11.

The set-screw, 14, is arranged in a line intersecting the seat, 11, and in a line to exert a direct thrust through the pipe, 12,

against a portion of said seat. By thus arranging the set-screw, 14, .its thrust is ex: erted along a line approximately diametrically of the pipe, 12, and this thrust is transmitted in a direct line to, and resisted by, a rigid part of the base portion of the bracket whereby the set-screw serves not merely to prevent the escape of the pipe out through the opening, 13, by restricting the width of that opening, but serves to rigidly clamp and secure the base of the bracket upon the pipe, 12.

Before the setscrew, 14, is set up against the pipe, 12, the bracket, 1, is adjusted rotatably and longitudinally of the pipe to the desired position; and when the set-screw, 14, is tightly set up, the bracket will be se= curely clamped and. locked in the adjusted position.

The set-screw, 14, is slightly unscrewed ,or loosened to permit the bracket to be removed sidewise from the pipe.

This construction of bracket has great advantage in combination with a conduitpipe which forms the support for the fixtures, as it permits the fixtures to be mounted upon, and detached from, the pipe at will without taking down the pipe or disturbing the outlets whereby the branch-wires are led out from the conduit.

In Figs. 8 and 9, I have shown an L- shaped bracket, 15, the offset shank, 16, of which is adjustably clamped between a baseclamping-member, 17, fixed upon a stationary support, 18, and a complementary clamping-member, 19, adapted to be drawn toward the member, 17, by means of a screwbolt, 20.

A finger, 21, on the disk, 19, engages a recess, 22, in the base-member, 17, to prevent relative rotation of the clamp-members.

For certain purposes of the invention, I prefer to make the clamping-washers, 8, wholly or in part of insulating material, whereby in addition to other functions above described, they also serve to completely insulate the lamp-supporting-ami, 7, from the other parts of the fixture.

The main line-wires within the conduit, 12, are shown, at 28, in Fig. 2, and the branch wires for the lamp-arm, 7 are shown at, 24, in Fig. 8.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. An electric lamp-fixture having in combination a pair of clamping-members, a screw-bolt for drawing. said members together, and a pair of clamping washers i11- terposed between said clamping-members, said washers having in their inner sides complementary grooves forming. a seat for a lamp supporting arm, said screw bolt passing through said washers.

2. An electric lamp-fixture having in combination a pair of clamping-members, a screw-bolt for drawing said members together, and a pair of clamping washers interposed between said clamping-members, said washers having in their inner sides complementary grooves forming a seat for a lamp-supporting-arm, portions of the inner sides of said washers being removed on the outer side of said seat to form an open slot leading to the seat.

3. An electric lampfixture having. in combination a pair of clamping-members, a screw-bolt for drawing together said members, and a pair of insulated disks embraced between said clamping-members, said disks having in their inner sides complementary grooves forming a seat for a lamp-supporting-arm, said disks being provided with apertures through which said. screw-bolt passes,

An electric lamp-fixture comprising in combination a pair of clamping-members, a screw-bolt for drawing together said clampingmembers, and a pair of clamping- Washers rotatively embraced 'between said clamping-members and adapted to be thereby clamped in selected rotative position, said Washers having in their inner sides complementary grooves forming a seat for a lampsupporting-arm.

5. An electric lamp-fixture comprising in combination abracket having a substantially U-shaped base forming an open pipebearing with divergent Walls, one branch of said base having screw-mechanism en ageable With a pipe inserted in said open aring, said bracket having an apertured clamping-member extending from the other branch of said base, another clamping-member complementary to said first-mentioned clamping-member, a screw-bolt for drawing said clamping-members together, and a pair of clamping-disks embraced between said clamping-members and provided in their neighboring faces with complementary grooves forming a seat for a lamp-supporting-arm.
