To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDwAnos B. STUART, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Chicago, county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Faucets, of which the following is a specification.
The purpose of this invention is to provide an improved faucet enabling users thereof to operate the same by shifting a movable valve controlling member by means of a drinking-glass or other vessel placed in position to receive water from the spout of the faucet. Further objects of the invention are to provide an improved structure designed to prevent injury to the glass when the same is engaged with the movable operating member of the faucet; and to provide means whereby a faucet of this class may be set in open position for any desired length of time and thereby serve the purposes of an ordinary kitchen faucet.
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a faucet con structed according to this invention.

In the construction shown, the faucet comprises a spout 1 having a threaded shank 2 for attachment to the water supply pipe, a valve 3, and operating mechanism there-- for.
The operating mechanism of the valve comprises a handle or lever 4: having a sector shaped portion at one side of the outlet 6 of the spout 1. The face of the sectorshaped portion is covered by a sheet of rubber or similar material 8, of the form of the sector. The rubber 8 serves as a pad to protect the edges of glasses which engage and operate the lever. The part 9 of the lever 4c is journaled on a rod 10 journaled in and extending from the side of the spout 1. The lever 4 at its outer end is shaped to conform to the curvature of a drinkingglass. It carries a pin 20 for engaging one of the lugs 21 of a small disk 30 fast to the rod 10. The rod 10 in the interior of the spout 1 carries an arm 16 connected by a bent link 17 to sliding valve 3. With this arrangement, when the lever 4 is rocked upwardly, by means of engaging its lower face with the upper edge of a glass, the rod 10 is rocked to the left, and thereby through the arm 16 and link 17 shifts the valve 3 to its open position.
The valve 3 may also be shifted to its open position by means of a separate operating handle 19. This handle is loosely journaled on the rod 10 and carries a pin 20 in position to engage one of the lugs 21 of the disk 30 fast to the rod 10. The arm 19 is movable against the action of the spring 22 and is retained in any of its set positions by a weighted pawl 23 cooperating with the ratchet teeth 24 cut in the arm 19.
In order to release the handle 19 and per -mit the valve to return to closed position,
the pawl 23 is arranged to be engaged by a pin 25 on the shiftable lever 4. The draw ing shows the valve operating means in its normal or idle position, with the pawl 23 in engagement with the ratchet teeth 24:. When the lever 4 is raised, the pawl is rocked out of engagement with the teeth 24, permitting the handle 19 to return to normal positlon under the action of its spring.
When the lever 4 is released, it returns to normal position under the action of the spring 26 coiled around the rod 10. The valve then becomes seated, due to the pressure of the water and the action of the spring 26.
The valve 3 is provided with tapered slots 28 in its side to allow for a gradual increase in flow when the valve is shifted to open position.
In order to provide access to the valve operating devices within the spout 1, the spout is provided with an opening adjacent the rod 10 which is normally closed by a threaded cap 27 bearing against a spring 31, which in turn engages a washer having conical edges for making a water-tight closure.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it Will be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted Without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claims.
I claim:
1. A faucet, comprising a spout, a valve, a handle, connections between said handle and valv'wh'ereby the valve may be shifted to open position by means-of the handle'but is permitted to move independently of the handle, a" pawlandjratchet for retaining said'ha'ndle in "shiftedposition, and separate means tor operating said valve, said is permitted to move independently of the handle, means for retaining said handle in shifted position, and a separate operating handle for said valve arranged to release said retaining means When operated.
