PATENT OFFICE.
ADAM J. STERNBERG, OF BUTLER, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRIVING-PUMP FILTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,447, dated August 13, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
Figure 1 is a side view of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section. Fig. 4 is a detached view.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several views.
The nature of this invention relates to the filter of a driving-prim p, whereby the water is allowed to flow into the tube of the pump free of sand and dirt.
The construction and operation of said filter are as follows: In the drawing, Fig. 1, A represents an iron shell or case, in the sides of which are elongated perforations or slits, B, for the admission of water to the inside of the shell. Within said shell is a central tube, 0, having its end armed with a conical point, D, the greatest diameter of which should be somewhat larger than the diameter of the shell, so
that as the point is driven into the ground the shell will follow without crowding in the hole made by the descending point. E F are spiral wings attached to and winding around the tube, as shown in Fig. 4. The diameter of said wings is such as to fill the bore of the shell. It will be observed that two of said wings are perforated with holes, whereas the other two alternating therewith are not perforated, and that the section of the tube lying between the wings on two sides only are perforated with holes, a, Fig. 4, the purpose of which will presently be shown. The relative position of the wings and tube to the perforations of the case is such as to place the perforated sides of the case between the wings -not inclosing the perforated sides of the tube -that is to say, the sides of the tube not perforated are placed in direct relation to the perforated sides of the case, whereas the perforated sides of the tube are placed directly opposite the unperforated or close sides of the case, as indicated in Fig. 2, in which figure the wings E E are those perforated, whereas the wings F F are the plain ones. The sides 0 f are the perforated sides of the case or shell, and g h represent the perforated sides of the tube between the wings c a and b (6.
By this construction of the several parts of the fitter, and their relations to each other, the water is strained three times before it enters the tube-first, by the outer case or shell. through the elongated perforations or slits; secondly, through the perforated wings E E; and, thirdly, through the perforated sides 9 h of the central tube. It will be obvious that by these several filtrations of the water it enters the tube quite free from foreign matter, and therefore not liable to obstruct the Working of the pump used in lifting water from the well.
Claim.
ranged in relation to and in combination with.
the perforated or slit case A, in the manner as and for the purpose specified.
