FEED-REGULATOR FOR POWDERED COAL.

T 0 all whom it may concern Be it knownthat we, Hanson THOMAS and JOHN DAHLs'rRoM, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Feed-Regulators for Po' wdered Coal, and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Our invention relates to a feed-regulator for powdered coal. 1
The object of our invention is to provide a device of this character to be located in the supply-pipe conveying the air and pulverized coal to the furnace, whereby the amount of coal to be delivered to the furnace may be quickly and accurately regulated in proportion to the heat required and at-the same time providing for an even distribution of the air and coal and without interference to the passage of the coal to the furnace, thereby preventing the clogging up or uneven distribution of the coal.
To these ends our inve tion comprises the novel features hereinafter set forth and V claimed.

In the drawing, the numeral. 2 designates a suitable main supply-pipe or branch:from the main supply-pipe for conveying the powdered coal under blast to the furnaces. We have only shown one connection from this pipe to the furnace, although it is apparent to be tapped at different points according to the number of furnaces supplied therefrom.
1 A saddle 3 is secured in position by the U bolts i and nuts 5. Secured to the saddle 3 is the casting 6 with the passage 7 formed therein. This casting 6 has the flange 8, and,
said casting is secured to the saddle 3 by the threaded bolts 9 screwed into said saddle and provided at their outer ends with the nuts 10. By this construction the casting 6 and the parts carried thereby may bereadily detached from the supply-pipe for repair purposes.

The neck-portion 11 of the casting 6 projects up into the pipe 12 formed therein. The saddle 3 has also the neck-portion 13 projecting up into the pipe 2,and the neck 11 of the ,casting 6 fits within the neck portion of said saddle.
The casting 6 has the opening 14 formed 2 through the opening therein to receive the stem 15. The stem 15 has the threaded portion. 16 which engages the threaded seat 17 in the bracket 18 of the casting 6. The outer end of the stem 15 is provided with the hand-wheel 19.
The inner end of the'stem carries the deflector or discharge member 20, said member having the concaved or grooved face 21 facing in the direction of the travel of the powdered coal in. its passage through the pipe 2. The deflector or discharge member 20 has the seat 22 which receives the stud 23 carried by the casting 6 to prevent therotation of said member when the stem 15 is turned to move said member to and fro within the pipe 2.
Beyond. the deflector 20 is the disk 24 mounted on the stem 15, and a lock-nut 25 secures said disk in position, so that said disk is free'to rotate with the stem 15.
A pipe-26 is connected up to the casting 6 and said pipe leads to the furnace. An anxiliany air-inlet 27 is provided in the casting 6 by which a blast of air ma be admitted to the passage 7 and said inlet is preferably in line with the center of the pipe 26.
When our improved regulator is in use and the powdered coal is to he delivered to the furnace through the pipe 26, the deflector or discharge member 20 projects within the pipe 2. as indicated in Fig. 1, and the combined air and coal traveling in the direction of the arrow will be caught or deflected by the deflector 20 and discharged down into the passage 7, and thence by the pipe 26 to the furnace. The concaved face of the deflector will tend to catch and direct the coal down into the passage 7. and it will be apparent that by turning the handle 19, the position of the deflector may be regulated so as to increase or decrease the amount of coal delivered to the furnace. By withdrawing the deflector, the area exposed to the oncoming coal is reduced, and consequently the amount of coal delivered to the furnace is reduced. .Where it is desired to cut ofi? the supply entirely, the hand-wheel 19 is turned until the disk 24= is brought down and seated on the neck-portion ll of the casting 6. The
discharge member has disk 24 is beveled, and thereby forms a tight joint when seated on the neck 11 so as to prevent the passage of any coal to the furnace. The only projecting portion of the device when the coal is cut ofl" from the furnace is that portion of the disk projecting beyond the neck 11, but the double bevel on said disk will not furnish sufficient obstruction to cause the clogging of the fuel at this point. Furthermore, the disk 24 turns with the stem 15, and this turning will act to seat said disk and make a very tight joint, as any coal which may have collected will be removed by this turning action of the disk when it comes into seating position with reference to the neck 11.
.In cases where the discharge member 20 is adjusted to a point where only a small supply of fuel is delivered to the passage 6, the auxiliary blast 27 may be employed, which will act to create a suction in said passage to accelerate the travel of the fuel and in driving it through the pipe 26 into the furnace.
In Fig. 4, we have shown a modified form of our invention in which the deflector or a series of grooves formed therein, which will act to divide up the coal and give a better distribution of same.
By our invention we provide a simple and efficient regulatorby' means of which the amount of fuel may be quickly and easily regulated in proportion to the heat required in any'individual furnace connected up with a system, while at the'same time we obtain an even distribution of air and coal without any interference which would tend to retard the progress of the coal or cause it to build up or clog at points.
What we claim is 1. In a feed regulator for powdered fuel, the combination of a supply pipe for conveying the air and powdered fuel having a discharge opening, and a deflecting member at said opening in the path of said air and fuel and movable to and from said opening whereby a portion of the air and fuel inits passage through said supply pipe is discharged through said opening.

the combination of a supply pipe for conveying the air and powdered fuel having a discharge outlet, a connection leading from said outlet, a rotary stem carried by said connection, and a non-rotary deflecting member carried by said stem adapted to be projected into the path of the air and powdered fuel, or withdrawn therefrom, whereby a portion of the air and powdered fuel in its passage through said pipe is discharged through said outlet.
5. In a feed regulator for powdered fuel, the combination of a supply pipe for conveying the air and pulverized fuel, having a discharge outlet, a connection leading from said outlet, a threaded stemcarried by said connection, a non-rotary deflecting member carried by said stem adapted tobe brought 111130 the path of the air and powdered fuel, a
rotary disk carried by said stem beyond said member and said disk forming a closure for said discharge outlet, whereby a portion of the air and powdered fuel in its passage through said pipe may be discharged through said outlet.
6. In a feed regulator. for powdered fuel,
the combination of a supply pipe for conveying the air and powdered fuel having a discharge outlet, a connection leading therefrom, a threaded stem carried by said connection, a non-rotary deflecting member carried by said stem adapted to project into the path of said air and powdered fuel, and a rotary beveled disk carried by said stem beyond said deflecting member and forming a closure for said discharge outlet whereby a portion of the air and powdered coal in its passage through said pipe may be dis charged through said outlet.
