Be it known that I, CONRAD JBsT, a citizen of the United States,4 and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Brush-Making Machine; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the-invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itv appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom anying drawings, and to the characters o reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to brush making machines, and particularly to a machine adapted to bore bristle receiving holes in a brush-baclrand to set bristle tufts therein.
The object of my invention is the provision of a machine of the character described, which is more particularly intended for making tooth brushes, but is not restricted thereto, and isV semi-automatic in its 'operation, automatically stopping when a predetermined number of holes have been bored lin one brush-back and the holes in another back have been filled with bristle tufts, the operating parts thereof then automatically returning to normal starting posltlon upon the tripping of a. manual control.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whic-h- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a machine embodying the invention with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a dilferent side thereof with the drill head carrying alrm broken away. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional elevation taken on the dotted line 3 3 in Fig. 2, with parts broken away.'

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the machine frame, from one side of which an L-shaped arm 2 projects outward and upward. A table or slide-plate 3 is mounted. on theupper end of the arm 2 for horizontal reclprocatory movements toward and away from the upper end yportion of the frame 1 and has its inner end, or that which 1s adjacent to the frame l, provided with vertically disposed cross-arms, one of which 1s designated 4, and projects upward and the other of which is designated 5 and projects downward from the table end. The upper arm 4 is of dove-tailv form to form a vertlcal retaining guide on which a plate Gis mounted for vertical reciprocatory movements, thev vertical movements being controlled as hereinafter described. The plate 6 -is provided adjacent to its upper edge and at the side thereof opposed `to the arm 4 with a. horizontally extending cross-guide 7, on which an article carrying plate 8 is l mounted for horizontal reciprocato-ry movements wit-h thel article carrying face of said plate disposed in a vertical plane. A brushback clamping uni-t 9 iscarried by the platey plate 8 and contains a pair of blocks 11 and 12, which are mounted fory relative to and fro move-ments, and each Aof these blocks is provided with a workl clamping jaw 13.V The work clamping and releasing move-` ments of the iblocks 11 and 12 are cont-rolled by a hand-screw 14, which extends vertically through the box 10, being anchored against longitudinal movements relative thereto and having right hand thread connection with one. of the blocks and left hand thread connection with thel other thereof. v
An adjustable'end stop l5 is provided at one end of .the'box 10 'for'contact with one end of arbrush-back to be clamped. The plate 8 has an arm or extension 16 of rearwardly angled L form, which carries a work clamping unit 17, which may be of the same construction as the clamping unit 9. A bracket-ann 18 projects outward and upward from one-side of the frame-arm 2 adjacent to the upper end thereof andcarries at its outer end a drill-head 19 in advance of the clamping unit 17 in position for the drill of such head to bore horizontal holes in a brush-back a carried bysaid unit when head. The thrust of the drill against the mounted for rotary -movements onv this shaft is a hub member 23, which fXedly carries an index-wheel 24 having ratchet` teeth around its periphery, and the ttwo pattern- wheels 25 and 26 disposed at opposite sides of the index-wheel 24. The pattern-wheel 25 controls the vertical move-- ments of the plates 6 and 8 and for such purpose the periphery of such wheel is Suitably fashioned, as illustrated in Fig. 3, andl the plate 6 has a spindle projecting therefrom and carrying a roller 27, which rldes on the top of the wheel periphery .(Fig. 6). The pattern-wheel 26 is intended to control .the horizontal movements of the plate 8 and for such purpose has its periphery suitably fashioned in accordance with the movement desired and `in contact with a roller on the lower end of a vertically disposed lever 28, lwhich is fulcrumed at 29 to the forward end of the slide-table 3 and has its upper arm l30 extending upward at the rear of the plate 8 and provided at its end with a roller 31 in horizontal thrust contact with a thrust.

The thrust of the roller 31 on the shoulder 32, in the present instance, is toward the left and a movement of the plate 8 under such thrust is resisted by a coiled contractile spring 33, which connects the right end of the plate 8 to a bracket-arm 34 projecting horizontally from the vertically movable slide-plate 6 at the right thereof. i
An angled lever 35 is fulcrumed to the table-'arm 5 below the index-wheel 24, as at 36, for vertical rocking movements and has one arm thereof pivotally carrying a pawl 37 in engagement with the teeth of the index-wheel and its other arm extending horizontally and provided with a roller 38, which, at each rearward movement of the table 3 and arm 5, travels up an incline 39 (Figs. 2 and 4) on the-frame-arm 2 and effects a rocking of such lever in a direction to impart a predetermined rotary movement to the index-wheel. The pawl 37 is held in yielding engagement with the teeth of the index-wheel by a spring 40.
The main drive-shaft 41 of the machine is mounted transversely in the frame 1 and, in the present instance, carries at one end thereof a loose belt-pulley 42, which is driven from any suitable source of power, and a clwtch member 43, which is feathered to the shaft and movable into and outof clutch engagement with the pulley 42. The shipper-lever 44 for the clutch` member has its upper endpivoted to a link 45, which proj ects horizontally. into the interior of the frame 1 and has its inner end mounted for'limited horizontal movements von a pin 46. A coiled contractile spring 47 acts on the shipper-lever 44 to normally hold it in clutch released position. lThe llnk 45 has a shoulder ,48 on one side thereof with which a vertically disposed rocker-arm 49 on a shaft 49 is intended to have thrust ento the link 45 and shipper-lever 44.
The other end of the shaft 41 to that which carries the pulley 42 has crank connection through a link 53 with a vertically disposed lever 54, which is pivoted at its lower end to the adjacent side of the frame 1 and has its upper end projecting up into the head portion 1"L of the frame 1 and connected' to the bristle tuft settinof plunger of the'tuft setting mechanism, the head of which is designated 55, to operate said mechanism, as is well understood in the art, and as more specifically illustrated and described in connection with'my former Patent No. 1,144,711. It will be understood that at each -forward movement of the lever 54 the bristle tuft setting mechanism is operated to set a bristle tuft in the registering hole of abrushback which is carried by the clamping unit 9.
A` vertically disposed lever 56 is fulcrumed .to the rear side of the frame-arm 2 and has its upper end pivotally connected to the slide-table. 3 and its lower end connected by a link 57 to the lever 54., whereby each rearward bristle tuft setting stroke of the lever 54 will impart a predetermined forward movement to the table 3 to place a brush-back, carried by the plate 8 in tuft receiving position. The rearward thrust of the link 57 on the lever 56 is cushioned by a spring-pressed thrust member 58.
A coiled tension spring 5.9 is disposed within a portion of the hub member 23 and llimit the back turning movement of said wheels (Fig. 3), The lever 6l is horizontally disposed, being fulcrumed on a stud 4retract the pawl 37 from engagementwith lthe index-wheel teeth when sa1d lever 1s rocked in one direction. A spring-pressed dog 64 normally engages a tooth 1n the 1ndex-.wheel 24 and prevents a back turning of such wheel .This dog has a pin 65 projecting transversely therefrom vbelow the.

A trip-rod 6'6 is mounted for vertical .reciprocatory movements in the frame-arm 2 and has a pin 67, which, when the rod lever 61 and effects a downward rocking of the other end portion thereof to-retract both the pawl 37 and dog 64 from index-wheel engaging position so that the wheel 1s then free to be returned to its normal or starting position by the action of the spring 59. Thelower end of the trip-rod 66 rests 'on the rear end of a pedal-lever 68, which is pivoted to one side of the frame 1, as at 69, and has its forward end disposed in position to-be depressed by a foot of the operator. The upper end of the trip-rod 66 is provided with a trip-finger 70, which, upon a raising thereof, engages an arm 71 projecting from the lever 2-8, 30 at thejfulcrum thereof. A raising of the finger 7() in engagement with the lever-arm 71 effects a rocking of the lever 28, 30 to disengage the pattern-wheel 2'6 and to force the .work carrying plate 8 to the left to starting position against the tension of the spring 33.
The vertical slide-plate 6 has an arm 72 fixedly'projecting from one side edge thereof in position to be engaged and raised by the finger when elevatedwith the triprod 66, thus raising the roller 27 from engagement with the periphery of the patternwheel 25.
An arm 7-3 fixedly depends from one end of the shaft 49 and has its lower'end angled to engage a notch in a catch member 74 projecting from one end of a trip-lever 75. This lever is fulcrumed to the frame-arm, as at 7'6, and has its inner end provided with a pin 78 in position to 4be engaged by an ear 79 on the outer marginal portion o-f the index-wheel 24 when such wheel has been turned a predetermined extent for such purpose. The engaging of the ear 79 with the pin 78 causes a rocking of the lever to release the catch engagement of the member 74 with the arm 73, thus permitting a rocking of the shaft 49 in a direction to permit the spring 47 to withdraw the clutch 43 from pulley engaging position, thus stopping the operation of the machine. The shaft 76 has a control arm 8 0 rising therefrom to facilitate a manual movement of the trip-lever 75 to stop the running of the machine whenever desired. A coiled contractile spring `81 connects the arms 73 and and,y acts to retain the catch-member 74 and arm 73 in catch engagement.v
The operation of the machine is as follows: The operator, having positioned in the clamping unit 17 a brush-back a to be bored and positioned-in the clamping unit 9 \a bored brush-back b, depresses the trip 51 which rocks the shaft 49 and effects an outward movement of the link 45 and shipperlever 44 to place the clutch member 43 in pulley engaging position, the clutchmeans v being maintained in such engaged position by the catch engagement of the arm 73 with the notched end. of the catch-member 74. At each revolution of the .shaft 41 the lever 54 has a forward and return stroke imparted thereto to move the slide-table 3 first forward and then backward, the boring of the first hole in the brush-back a and the setting of a bristle tuft into the first hole` of a brush-back 71 taking place during the forward stroke of said table. The bristle tuft is ejected from the bristle feeding head 55 upon the rearward movement of the lever 54. Upon the rearward or return stroke of the table 3 after the said boring and bristle feeding operations the roller- 38 on the lever 35 travels up the. incline 39, effecting a rocking of said lever and a consequent predetermined index-wheel feeding movement to the-pawl 37. This movement of the index-wheel. 24 and the pattern-wheel 26, which rotates therewith, permits a sufficient rocking of the lever 28, 30 and movement to the right of the slide-plate 8, under the action of the spring 33, to place the brushback a in position for the next hole to be bored therein and the brush-'back b in position for the next hole in order therein to receive a bristle tuft. The boring and bristle tuft filling operations of the respective brush-backs then take place upon the next rearward stroke of the lever 54 and forward stroke of the table 3. When a horizontal row of holes has been bored in one brush-back and a' corresponding row of holes in the other brush-:back filled with bristle tufts the pattern-wheel 25 will have rotated a sufficient extent to raise the slide-plates 6 and 8 a distance equal to the space between the rows of holes, and the first hole of the second row will be bored in one brush-back and filled in the other brush-back upon the next forward stroke of the table 3. The boring and fillingof the successive holes in the rows of the respective brush-backs will then take place the same as before except that the slide-plate 8 is moved in the opposite direction to the direction in which it was moved for the first row, such movement being effected by the coperating action of the wheel 26 and lever 28, 30. When the boring of one and the bristle filling of the other brush-back has been completed the ear 79 on the indexwheel 24 will have moved into-position ,to engage the pin 78 and impart a tripping movement to the lever` 75 to release the catch en agement of the member 74 with the arm 3. -The shaft ,49' then rocks to re- -lease the thrust engagement of the arm 49 with the link 45 so that the clutch 43 will be drawn from pulley engagingv position by the action of the spring 47. he operator then depresses the forward end of the pedallever 68 to effect a raising of the trip-rod 66 so that the finger 70 thereon engages the arm 72 and raises it and the slide 6 a suflicient extent to release the roller 27 from engagementl with the pattern-Wheel 25. The raising of the finger 70 also causes it to coact 'with the arm- 71 and rock the 1ever 28, 30 to disengage the pattern-wheel 26 and to move theslide-plate 8 to starting position against the tension of the spring 33. The raising of the trip-rod .66 also causes the pin 67 to coact with and rock the lever 6 1 to withdraw both the pawl 37 and dog 64 from index- Wheel engagin wheels 24, 25 and 26 ave thus been released the spring 59 will cause a return thereof to normal starting position, which is determined by the stop 60 striking the adjacent end of the lever 61. The operator then removes the brush-backs from their respective clamps and places the bored brush-back in the clamp 9 and an unbored brush-back in the clamp 17 prepratory to again starting the machine to re one and set bristle tufts in the other back.
It is evident that the machine is semi-automatic in its nature in that the operator, after having placed the brush-back 1n positionand started an operation of the machine, can leave the machine and it will be automatically stopped when the boring and fill-v ing operations in the respective brush-backs have been completed. A sin le operator is thus enabled to take care o a number of machines at one time. In Ia machine of the class described, an article carrying member mounted for vertical reciprocatory movement, means operable to impart said recip-rocatory movement to said member, a manually controlled trip-rod mounted for reciprocatory movements, and trip means for coperatin with said rod at a predetermined point 1n the reciprocatory movement thereof to move said member to disconnect it from said operating means.

In a machine of the class described, a work carrying member mounted for predetermined movements, means operable to impart said predetermined movements to said member, drive means operable to periodically move said first means, a trip rod mounted for longitudinal reciprocatory movements and adapted at predetermined points in its movement to break the operating connection between said first means and member and the driving connection between said first and second means.

In a machine of the class described, a frame, a work carrying member mounted for predetermined reciprocatory movements relative to said frame, means operable to impart said predetermined .movements to said member and including an index-wheel, a pair of pawls engaging said wheel, one serving as a back-check and the other being operalble to impart advancing movements to the wheel, a lever movable to disengage said pawls from said wheel, a trip-rod mounted for longitudinal reciprocatory movements in said frame and operable when moved to move said lever and t0 break the operating connection between said member and operating means.

In a machine of the classdescribed, a work-holding member mounted for predetermined reciprocatory movements, a pattern wheel, a lever connecting said pattern wheel and member for imparting predetermined movements from one to the other, means for driving said pattern wheel including a pawl and ratchet, a dog coacting with the ratchet member of said driving means to prevent a back turning of the ratchet member, a lever operable to disengage the pawl member of said driving means and said dog frointhe ratchet member of said means, and trip means operable to act on said pattern Wheel coacting lever to break ythe connection therebetween and on said second lever to discngage the dog and the pawl member from the ratchet member of the driving means.

In a machine of the class described, a table mounted for horizontal reciprocatory movements, a work holder carried by said table for vertical and horizontal reciprocatory movements relative thereto, two pattern wheels, means for driving said pattern wheels, means carried by said holder and resting on one pattern wheel to coperate therewith to impart vertical movements to the holder when the pattern wheel is rotated, means connecting the other pattern wheel and holder to impart predetermined horizontal movements to the work holder from a rotation of the coacting pattern wheel, a trip member operable to engage said work holder and move it to separate one of said means and coacting pattern wheel and to coact with the other of said means to move it from engagement with its pattern Wheel and to impart a predetermined horizontal movement to the workholder, and means for imparting rotation to said pattern wheels.
9. In a machine of the class described, a frame having an incline, a table mounted for horizontal reciprocatory movements on said frame, a work holdler movably carried by said table, a pattern wheel and a ratchet wheel fixed to'each other and rotatably carried by said table, a connection between said pattern wheel and work holder to-impart predetermined movements to the work holderl from a rotation of said wheel, a lever fulcrumed to said table, and adapted to coact with and be rocked by said frame incline during a predetermined portion of the table movement, a pawl carried by said lever and operable to coact with said ratchet wheel and impart rotation thereto when the lever is rocked by said incline, and means for periodically imparting reciprocatory movements to said table.
