Post 6 is adapted to be secured to a bench or any suitable-base22-by a bolt 23 and nut 24E, the head 25l of the bolt being confined within a recess 26 in the upper end of the post immediately beneath the jaw shank 7, and the round flange 27 has a circle of serrations 28 at its bottom adapted to eifect a rm hold and grip on the bench and prevent independent rotation of the post.
In operating the vise, when the Work is clamped between the jaws] the screw 9 draws. the tubular nut 14 inwardly and the ring nut16 presses the end cap 15 against the outer end of the split body while a similar pressing movement occurs in an opposite direction against theother split portion of the body lat the annular shoulder 29 at the base of jaw 8, thereby clamping the shank 7 in the body and at the same time clamping the split branch 3 of the body on the post. `The ring nut 16 may be adjusted to hold the end cap 15 tightly against the end of the body 2 at all times, so that the rotation of the jaws together within the split body may be under frictional restraint, and by reference to Fig. 1 it will be seen that when the nut 16 is tightened the lips 2O of the square collar 19 will draw the shank 7 of jaw 8 t0- ward the end cap 15 while pressing the said end cap against the body 2, and a slight space is left between thel outer end of the shank 7 and the end cap 15 so that an effective working union may be obtained.
What I claim is:
1. A vise, comprising a split body having a longitudinalbore, a jaw having a shank rotatable in said bore, a second jaw having a flat-sided extension slidable in said shank, an operating screw engaged with said second ljaw and extending through said flatsided collar with a pair of lips, a rectangular opening in one end of said shank adapted to receive said collar and an end wall for said shank adapted to be. engaged by said lips, an end cap loosely sleeved on said tubular nut and bearing .against one end of said body and having interlocking engagement with said jaw shank, and a nut in screw engagement with said tubular nut and in bearing engagement with said end cap.
2. In a vise as described, a split body having a pair of jaws rotatably mounted therein, one of said jaws having a round shank with a Hat-sided opening in one end thereof,

In a vise as described, a split body, a jaw member having a shank with a rectangular opening in one end thereof, an end cap for said body having a locking fit with said shank, a tubular nut having a square collar with lips adapted to pass through said opening andy when turned to interlock therewith, a second jaw member, an operating screw engaged with said second jaw member and said tubular nut, and means on the outer end of said tubular nut engaging said end cap.
4:. A vise, comprising a tubular body having a branch with a longitudinal bore and a transverse opening and split transversely of the body into said transverse opening, a jaw havino` va round shank rotatably mounted within the bore of said body, a second jaw having a rectangular extension slidably confined within said shank, an operating screw engaged with said second jaw and extending through said rectangular extension, a tubular nut engaged with said screw having a fiat-sided collar of rectangular formation, an end cap sleeved upon said tubular nut in bearing engagement with the end of said split body, a ring nut on the outer end of said tubular nut engaged with said end cap, and both said collar and the end cap having direct locking connection with the said round shank.
5. A vise comprising a split tubular body, a jaw having a cylindrical shank provided with a rectangular opening in the outer end thereof, a cap over the end of said body having projections extending into said rectangular opening, a tubular 'ut having a collar provided with lips interlocking with the said shank, a nut on the outer end of said tubular nut bearing against the said cap, and a second jaw and an operating screw engaged therewith and in said tubular nut.
6. In a vise as described, an inner jaw having a tubular shank with an inwardly extending wall at its end, a tubular nut having a square collar with lips projecting in opposite direction therefrom and engaged with said wall, an end cap having a central opening bordered on two sides by parallel projections and engaged over the said nut with said shank, an outer jaw and an operating screw through the same and the said nut and cap, and a ring nut on said tubular nut bearing against said cap.
