UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FITZALLAX B. WILLIAMS, OF STERLING, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HANGERS FOR SHAFTING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.130,348, dated August 6, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F. B. \VILLIAMs, of Sterling, in the county of Whitesides and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hanging for Shafting; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification. I
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a hanger for shafting, as will behereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure lis a side view, and Fig. 2 an end view, of my hanger. Fig. 3 is a perspective view ofa nut used in my hanger. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the box, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the lower part thereof.
A represents a straight bar or plate, cast, with the downward-projectin g semicircle B, in one piece. In the middle of this semicircle B is a vertical round hole, and in the same are formed two finished seats, 0 (3, between which a nut, D, is fitted. This nut is held by asetscrew, a, from turning, after it has been adjusted. G represents the yoke, in which the box is held by set screws 1) b, said yoke being provided with a screw, E, so as to be screwed into the nut D, thus connecting said yoke with the bracket A B. 'One end of the yoke G is open, and this open end connected with the main part by means of a rod, d, hooked into the main part and dropping into a slot in the open end, and fastened by nuts 0 c. The box in which the shaftin g is placed isv made in two halves, H and H. The lower half, H, is provided with an upward-project ing ear, h, in the center, on each side, and on each side of each ear h is an outward-projectin g ear, f. The upper half, H, has similar outward-projecting ears, so that the two halves may be fastened togethenby passing screws 6 ithrough the same. Between the ears on the upper half are rims or flanges to fit over the upwardprojectin g ears h h on the lower halt. The ears h h have recesses on their outer sides, into which the setscrews b b enter to support the box in the yoke. The upper half, H, of the box has an oil-chamber, 70, on top, closed by a lid, on. The lower half, H, is provided with a groove or channel, a, running parallel with the shaft, and covered with Babbitt metal 1). It has also chambers s to hold packing for retaining the oil.
I do not specifically claim the shafting-box herein shown and described, under this patent, nor do I wish to be understood as confining myself to the particular box with my improved hanger.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The nut D, fitted between two finished seats, G O, and held in place in the bracket A B by means of the set-screw a, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The yoke G, open at one end, with rod d and nuts 0 e to fasten said end, and provided with set-screws b b to hold the box, and with screw E to attach it to the bracket A B, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 6th day of July, 1872.
FITZALLAN B. WILLIAMS. [L. s.]
