FITZALLAN B. WILLIAMS, OF STERLING, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COUPLINGS FOR SHAFTING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,347, dated August 6, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F. B.W1LL1AMs, of Sterling, in the county of Whitesides and in -the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coupling for Shafts; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specilication.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a compression coupling for shafting, as will be herein after more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which myinvention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its con'- struction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of my coupling. 2 is a perspective view of the end of the shaft, and Fig. 3 is an end view of the coupling.
A A represent the ends of two shafts to be coupled together. These ends are placed in a bisected sleeve, the two halves of which are marked B B. Pins a a., secured in the edges of one of the halves and entering holes in the other, prevent them from slipping apart. In
Vone or both of said halves are also iitted locks b b, and near the end of each shaft A is a cross-groove, d, to t on said locks to prevent the shafts from coming out of the coupling. The exterior of the sleeve B is slightly tapering toward both ends, as shown in Fig. 1, and on said ends are placed two wrought-iron rings, C and D, the ring C having screwthreads around its outer circumference. G represents the outer shell, provided with an interior circumferential flange, e, at one end, and female screw-threads at the other. This shell is passed over the sleeve B from Athe end having the ring D, and is screwed onto the ring C, the flange e at the other end catching `on the said ring D, and by thus screwing up the outside shell the two rings are drawn toward the center of the sleeve, so that the sleeve will firmly clamp and couple the two shafts together.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the bisected sleeve B, tapering toward both ends, the wrought-iron rings U D, and the sleeve G with interior flange e, said sleeve being screwed onto the ring C, all substantially as and for the pur# poses herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 6th day of July, 1872.
