To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, ABRAHAM NovIoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and erence to mechanism of that class for use in an envelop machine.
The present application is a continuation of my allowed and subsequently abandoned application Serial No. 55,356, (series of 1915) said application being a renewal of my forfeited application Serial No. 825,217
(series of 1900). The present application, like my previous applicatlon above referred to, from which the present application is continued, is a division of my original application Serial No. 795,629 (series of 1900), filed October 17, 1913.; l
The present invention contemplates the production of blanks, substantially parallelogramrnic in form, from a contmuous y moving web of material, such as paper or cardboard. The blanks are cut on the bias from the web, so as to economize stock and reduce the waste to a minlmum. The invention contemplates the further advancement transit, so as to center and square them with reference to their direction of motion, and thereby bring one axis of the blank in line with said direction of motion.

' which has supporting legs 2, 2. The table 1 supports a pair of longitudinal side frames 3 and 4:, and substantially at right angles to the latter a pair of transverse side frames 5 and 6. Power is imparted'to the mechanism from a suitable source, not shown. by means ofa belt pulley 7 on main driving shaft 8. the latter being suitablvjournaled in the side frame 3; The shaft 8 carries a pinion 9 which is in mesh with a gear 10 on a countershaft 11, also journalcd in the side frame 3, Above the shaft 11 is journaled a shaft 12, which is driven from the shaft ll by means of inter-meshing gears 13 and 14. The gear 14: on shaft 12 serves to actuate the web-advancing and blank-cub ting devices of my incclumism, as hereinaf ter described;

Figs. 1 and 3, is taken from a roll, not shown, and is continuously forwarded between the bight of feed rolls 15' and 16 which are carried on shafts 17 and 18 respectively having suitable bearings in the frames 3 and 4. Said shafts carry intermeshing gear 19 and 20, the first named, gear being also in mesh withthe gear 14 on shaft 12, whereby the feed rolls 15 and 16 are rotated in unison, continuously, to move the'webA forward. In advance of said feed rolls are provided cutting cylinders 21 and-22, which are carried on shafts 23 and 24 respectively having suitable bearings in the side frames 3 and 4. Said shafts carry intermeshing gears 25 and 26. the first named gear being in mesh with the gear 14 .on shaft 12, whereby the cutting cylinders.
21 and 22 are driven in thesame' direction, relatively, as the forward rolls 15 and'16.
The cutting cylinder 22, in the present in stance, is constructed as represented in Figs. 4 and 5. Said cylinder carries at each end .thereof a pair of cutters 27 27, for making the notches 28 in the edge of the traveling web A, as shown in Fig. 13. Said cylinder 22 also carries a centrally disposed cutter ,29, for making at each revolution a center cut 30 in the web, as shown in Fig. 13. The
cutters 27 and 29 of cylinder'22 cooperate with the surface of cylinder 21 in making the four edge cuts 28 and the single center cut 30 in the web at each revolution, the surface of cylinder 21 being preferably hardened for this purpose. The pieces or chips of the web A which. are defined by these cutting operations do not become entirely separated from the web on account of the fact that some of the fibers of the material remain unsevered, and it is usually necessary to employ a mechanism for remov- Y ing these partially separated chips from the traveling web.
Such a chi j removing mechanism may take any suita le form, such as that shown in my copending application Serial No.
798,236, filed October 30, 1913. The details of such mechanism constitute no part of the present invention, and hence a description thereof is unnecessary; I have indicated a pair of chip removing rolls 31 and 32 which are mounted on shafts 33 and 34 reders, to remove successive chips from the I traveling web in the manner set forth in my aforesaid copending application Serial No.
7 98,236, or in any other well known manner.
It is to be understood that said chip removing devices are operable with respect to the crips cut from the edges of the web, at 28, as well as the chips cut from the center of the web at 30, Fig. 13.
In advance of the chip cutting cylinders 31 and 32, the'machine herein shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 provides cutting cylinders 40 and 41, which are carried on shafts 42 and 43 respectively, having intermeshing gears 44 and 45. The latter of said gears is in mesh with an intermediate gear 46 that is driven from the gear 35 of the chip removing cylinder 31. One of said cutting cylinders, here shown as the cylinder 41, Figs. 6 and 7, provides a substantially helical cutting blade 47, which is secured thereto in any suitable manner, as by means of a retaining screw '48 entering recess 49 in the periphery of said cylinder.
Said blade 47 cooperates with the surface of opposite cutting cylinder 40 to sever the traveling web A on successive oblique lines 50, 13, whereby to form blanks which are substantially parallelogrammic in outline. The cutting cylinders 40 and 41 are rotated in the same relative directions as the cutting cylinders 21 and 22, by the gearing .as above described, and the speeds of all said cutting devices are so timed that the linesof cut 50 will intersect the opposite corners of center cut 30 as well as the apexes of those notches 28 which are directly in line with each center cut 30, as clearly shown in Fig. 13. To this end the cutter blade 47 of cylinder 41 may be discontinuous, as shown in Fig. 6, a space being left between its two partswhere it intersects the center cut.30, which has already been formed in the traveling web A.
Instead of separate pairs of cutting cylinders 21, 22 and 40, 41 respectively, the functions above describedmay be performed by a single pair of cylinders, the cutter carrying mem er of which would take the form shown in Figs. 11 and 12. Such a cylinder 51 would carry four edge cutters 27 corresponding to the edge cutters 27 of cylinder 22, and a cylinder cutter 29 corresponding to the center cutter 29 of cylinder 22. Said cylinder would also carry, preferably integral with cutters27 and 29, the substantially helical cutter 47 corresponding to the cutter 47 of cylinder 41, and adapted to sever the web A into separate blanks, on oblique lines crossingsaid web, simultaneousl with the cutting of the edge and center chips therefrom. After the operation of such a cutting cylinder 51, the chips would be removed in the manner heretofore described, or in any other suitable manner, and'the blanks thus formed would thereby be completely separated from the we A, in precisely the same manner as shown in Fig. 13.

That is, the oblique line constitutes the advancing edge of successive blanks in each instance, said edge being formed by (5011-.
tiguous portions of one of the longitudinal flaps and one of the said flaps of the blank, as shown clearly in Fig. 13. With the blanks traveling in this direction, with such' an oblique edge foremost, there is no way in which the same may be centered and squared for the subsequent gumming andfolding operations of the machine, and the present invention contemplates such 7 a change in the direction of m'ovementof the blanks as will permit of theira-dvancement in a symmetrical relation to the machine as regards their projecting side, back and seal flaps, and at the same time retaining the advantages incident to cutting and forming the blanks in the manner above described, with a minimum waste of stock.
To this end the cylinders 52 and 53 are rotated so as to advance the separated blanks continuouslythrough the machine, said cylinders being carried on shafts 5a and 55 respectively which have intermeshing gears 56 and 57. The former of said gears ism mesh with an intermediate gear 58 that is driven from the gear 44 of cutting cylinder 40, whereby the cylinders 52 and 53 are rotated in unison, in the same direction relatively as thepreviously described forwarding, cutting and chip removing cylinders to move the blanks in substantially the same direction as the web A. The requisite change in direction, or partial rotation of the separated blanks, is efiected by devices inadvance of the'cylinders 52 and 53, as hereinafter described, and for the purpose of releasing each blank, just prior to the donunencement of this movement, one of said cylinders, in the present instance the cylinder 53, has a segmental cutaway portion 59. This portion 59 enables the blank to be drawn out.

The shafts 62- and 63 carry intermeshing gears 66 and 67, which are slightly beveled to compensate for which is in mesh with a bevel gear 69 on a transverse shaft 70, the latter being driven by bevel pinions 71 and 72 from a shaft 73.. The cylinders 276 and 77 cooperate in advancing the blank to the centering, squaring, gumming and folding devices of the machine, which form. no part of the present invention, and
are therefore unnecessary to describe. Said cylinders 76 and 7 7 are rotated by suitable intermeshing gears, one of which, 79;, is
shown in Fig. 1 asbeing driven from a pinion 80 on shaft 81, the latter having a bevel gear connection 82 and 83 with shaft 70.
For facilitating the blank turning action of conical rolls 60, 61, I provide ooactin pairs of short cylindrical rolls 3%, 35 an 86, 87 which are located respectively on opposite sides of said conical rolls, between. the same and the adjacent pairs of cylinders 84 and 85 are carried on shafts 88 and 89 respectively, having intermeshing gears 90 and 91. The former of said gears is driven by an intermediate gear 92 which is in mesh with gear 56 of cylinder 52, whereby the rolls 84 and 85 are rotated continuously in the same relative directions as cylinders 52 and 53. Said rolls 84, 85 are considerably larger than the cylinders 52, 53, whereby they may be placed in close proximity to the conical rolls 60, 61, in order to insure the feeding of the edge of each separated blank to the bight of said conical rolls near the outer larger ends of the latter. One of the rolls 84, 85, in the present instance the upper roll 85, has a segmental cutaway portion 93 similar to the portion 59 of cylinder 53, whereby the release of a blank is effected when the latter is seized by the conical rolls 60, 61. The rolls 86, 87 are substantially counterparts of the rolls 84, 85, one of them,
in the present instance the roll 87, having a segmental cutaway portion 94 which prevents said rolls from seizing the blank until .the latter has been released by the conical rolls 60 and 61. Said rolls 86, 87 are driven by' intermeshing gears 95, 96 respectively, Fig. 3, one of which is in mesh with the gear 80 that is used to drive the gears 79 of rolls 76 and 77.
One of the conical rolls, in the present instance roll 61,-has a segmental cutaway portion 97, which becomes operative to release the blank from the bight. of said rolls at the end of their turning operation thereon, just before said blank is seized in the bight of rolls 86, 87. In theoperation of the above described mechanism, the separated blanks are each in turn moved continuously into the conical rolls 60, 61, and the final rolls 84, 85 operate to swing the outer end or edge of the blank whilc remaining inoperativ with respect to its inner end or edge. The latter partakesof the gradual movement of translation which is accomplished by the smaller inner ends of conical rolls 60, 61, and is not operated upon by the rolls 86, 87 which act only on the more rapidly moving outer end or edge. The segmental cutaway portion 93 releases I the blank from the bight of rolls 84, 85 just as the blank is seized in the bight of conical rolls'60, 61, and the segmental cutaway portion 97 releases the blank from said conical rolls inst as said blank is seized by r0lls'86, 87. The latter complete the wide swinging movement of the outer end or edge of the blank, and thereafter the forward edge is seized in the bight of rolls 76, 77 and the blank is advanced into the position C for the operation of centering, squaring, gnmming and folding.
It will be seen that the successive blanks, as" out obliquely from the web A, have their eeann speed of advancement in the direction of said web gradually reduced as they come into the bight of conical rolls 60, 61. Simultaneous with their reduction in speed in the direction of web A, there is a combined movement of translation and rotation by said conical rolls and by the short rolls 84, 85 and 86, 87 which carries the blanks through a curved path, .whereby they come into symmetrical relation to the direction of advance of the final forwarding rolls 76, 77. i
I claim, y
1. The combination with means for con: tinuously advancing a web of paper, of means for forming blanks from said web durin its continuous advancement, means for a vancing said blanks, conical rolls with axes arranged diagonally to the direction of advancement of said blanks, and means for releasing the blanks from said blank advancing means upon their engagement by said conical rolls.
2. The combination with means for continuously advancing a web ofpaper, of means for forming a blank from said web during its continuous advancement, an initial and a. final means for forwarding the blank in different directions, conical rolls with their axes arranged diagonally to the first and final directions of movement of said blank, and means for releasing the blank from said conical rolls upon its engagement by said final blank forwarding means.
3. The combination with means for cutting parallelogrammic blanks from a continuously advancing web of paper, of means for forwarding said blanks, conical rolls for rotating a blank in transit through a predetermined angle, and means for forwarding said blank afterrotation.
4. The combination with means for cutting parallelogrammic blanks from a continuously advancing web of paper, of cylindrical segmental blank advancing rolls, conical segmental rolls with axes arranged diagonally to the first and final directions of advance of the blank for rotating said .blank in transit through a predetermined angle in the plane of advance of said blank, and cylindrical segmental rolls for forwarding said blank after rotation.
5. The combination with means for continuously advancing a web of paper, of means for forming blanks from said web during the continuous advancement of said web. means for continuously advancing said blanks, conical rolls with axes arranged diagonally to the first and final directions of advance of said blanks. and blank forwarding rolls following said conical rolls.
6. The combination with blank cutting means, of means for advancing the blanks, segmental conical rolls with axes arranged diagonally to the firstand final directions of advance of said blanks, for rotating said blanks through an angle less than a right angle, and means for forwarding said blanks in a direction substantially at right angles to their first direction of advance.
7. The combination with means for continuously advancing a web of paper, of blank 'cutting means for forming blanks substantially parallelogrammic in outline from said web, conical rolls with axes arranged diforwarding rolls, of diagonally extending conical segmental rolls for rotating a blank through an angle less than a right angle, and cylindrical segmental blank forwarding rolls following said conical rolls for forwarding said blank in a direction substantially at right anglesto the first direction of advance of said blank. 9. The combination with blank cutting means, of diagonally extending segmental conical rolls for rotating 'a blank in transit at high speed through an angle less than a right angle in the plane of its advance into position for a new direction of travel.
