WILLIAM H. PHILIP, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SECTIONAL BOATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,240, dated August 6, 1872.
- fastened by bolts applied so as to be taken out when the boat is to be shortened up. The object is to provide boats for sportsmen, travelers, army purposes, and the like, that can be readily shortened up into a compact package for economizing space in storage or transportation.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a sectional boat constructedaccording to my invention, and. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the middle section, which is widest at the center and tapers toward each end. B represents the forward sections, and G the aft sections. These sections are to be made of metal, and shaped with great care, the ends of each two that are to form a joint being on the same curved lines so as to match exactly. The said sections are also to comp'rise the complete portion or whole of the hull or shell of the boat within their length except the parts whichlap.
To prevent the outer parts of the sections from spreading by the inner parts wedging them outward, cross-beams E of any suitable kind will be employed.
For very small boats I may have the largest section at the bow, and only have the shell extend or shorten up one way; but in this respect the boat may be arranged as preferred.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Boats made in sections, arranged for shortening up the hull by sliding in one another telescopically, and fitted to form water-tight joints when extended, substantially as specified.
WILLIAM H. PHILIP.
