Specification of Letters Patent. Parbqgmjjjdl Appt, 229 119190 Application filed August 9, 1918'. Serial No. 249,092'.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it brown thatll, OSCAR JUNGGREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady, State ,ot' New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elastic- Fluid rlurbines, of which the following is va specification. r
The present .invention relates to elastic fluid turbines and especially to the blading tor such turbines. Particularly in the lower pressure stages of elastic lluid turbines the blades become of considerable length and where they are supported only at the base and tip there is always danger of their being set into vibration which may ultimately cause them to break. lt is accordingly desirable to provide some means for preventing such vibrations and the object of my invention is to provide an improved arrangement ot vibration means comprising projections between adjacent buckets, and an improved lmethod oi positioning such projec tions.. f l
For a consideration of what ll believe to be novel and my invention, attention is directed to the accompanying description and the claims appended thereto,
vln the drawing, Figurel is a side elevation partly in section ol a portion oil a bucket wheelembodying my invention, and 2 is a top plan view, partly in section.
Referring to the drawing, 5 indicates a portion the rim of a turbine wheel or disk j and d turbine buckets or blades mounted thereon, the outer ends ot the blades being connected by a bucket cover l. 'lhis may be taken as typical ol any turbine wheel structure. New according to my invention, ll provide preferably on the back of each bucket and at or about its central portion, a projection 8 which extends the full width oil the bucket and in the completed wheel engages the adjacent surface ot the nent bucket., rEhese projections 8 may be formed V centers ol" the buckets.
@lli
less than the width of the space between two adjacent buckets. 'llhe buckets are then assembled on the rim of the wheel and the bucket cover put into place. Since the projections 8 entend outward a distance less than the width of the space between adjacent buckets they will in no way interfere with the buckets taking any position they want to. 'in other words the buckets can assume their natural positions. After the buckets are assembled on the wheel and the bucket cover is in place, the projection e on each bucket is then bent into engagement with the nekt adjacent bucket, tor example, by tapping it with a suitable tool. then lforms a complete ring supporting llttound desirable the projections may expanded over or all ot their width by tapping a g into the holes 9. PThis insures contact oi che "free ends of the projections throughout their ,widths with' the next adjacent bucket faces. v
My invention, it will be seen from the foregoing, provides a simpleand easily car ried out method of providing projections between adjacent buckets whereby the projections may be made the 'lull width ol the buckets and even Contact olf them vtlnioughL l out their width with the buckets Since the projections may be provided on the buckets, as by fastening them to thebuckets, before the buckets are assembled on the wheel the result is a simple, cheap and easily performed operation. lWhen being assembled the buckets can assume their natural positions. rlhe bending and expanding of the projections into engagement with the next adjacent buckets is a simple and easily performed operation and one not likely to put any strain on the buckets, or in any way derange them,

lllll llllti 1. The improved method of constructing a turbine wheeln with braces between the buckets, which comprises providing projections, on the buckets which extend at an angle other than a right angle thereto and outwardly a distance less than the width of the space between adjacent buckets, as-
sembling the buckets on the wheel rim, and then bending the projection on each bucket so that it engages the next adjacent bucket.
2. The improved method of constructing a turbine wheel with braces between the buckets, which comprises providing projections on the buckets, which are of less length than the space between the buckets, assembling the buckets into place on the 4wheel rim, and then expanding` said projections so that each engages the next adj acent bucket.
3. The improved method of constructing a turbine wheel with braces -between the buckets, which comprises providing projections4 on the buckets which extend at an angle other than a right angle thereto and outwardly a distance ess than the width of the space between adjacent buckets, assembling the buckets on the wheel rim, `and then bending the projection on each bucket and expanding it so that it engages the next adjacent bucket.
4. rlhe combination with a bucket wheel of projections of comparatively thin material 'attached to an intermediate part 'of the buckets so as to project at angles other than a right angle therefrom whereby such pro-` isoigoa j ections may be bent to bring their tree ends into engagement with the next adjacent buckets.
5. The combination with a bucket wheel having comparatively long buckets thereon of projections attached tothe backs of at least some of the buckets, said projectionsv being formed of bendable material and extending at angles other thanna right angle to said buckets whereby the free ends of said v projections may be bent up into en agement ing at an angle other than a right angley thereto.
8. A bucket for a turbine having a bendable projection thereon located approximately midwayV between its ends and extending at an\ angle other than a right angle thereto, said projection being provided with,
one or morehol'es. l
ln witness whereof, l have hereunto set my hand this 7th day of Augustl918.
