Be it known that I, ALroRD B. HENsoN, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Franklin, in the county of Simpson and Stateof Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Demountable Rims, of which the following is a s ecification.

The objects of the invention are to simplify and improve the construction, arrangement and combination of parts entering into themake-up of the device With these and other ends in view which Will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be-hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a sim le and preferred form of the invention, it sing, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the recis'e structural details therein exhibited, ut that changes, alterations and modifications 'Within 'the scope of the claims may be resorted tofvvhen, desired.

By further inserting the spindle within thc opening 37, the pinion 41 will be presently placed in mesh with the rack'teeth 30 oi the ring, and by turning the handle 39 the said ring may novv be turned about its axis which is coincident With the axis of the Wheel. When the wrenclris withdrawn, the toothed portion of the dog is restored to engagement with the ratchet teeth 31 and the ring 27 Will thus be `secured against further rotation due to any reason th'at'is likel to occur.
The member 19 o the rim is provided with bayonet slots 46 and the member 20 is provided with lugs or projections 47 adapted for en a ement with said bayonet slots, said eing of such length as to extend beyond the inner face of the member 19 when the parts are assembled. The bayonet slots 46 are formed closely adjacent to the transversely disposed lugs or cleats 24 heretofore described. The member 20, in addition to the lugs 47, is provided With a special lug 48 which, when the parts are assembled, is positioned adjacent to the toothed ortion of vthe' ring 27, `near the juncture o the rack teeth and the ratchet teeth. The head 40 of theyvrench W is provided with a stud 49 adapted for engagement with the lug 48. The ring 27 is provided With a plurality of obliquely disposed cam members 50, as best seen in Figs. 5 and 8, there being' one such cam member for each of the lugs or cleats 24, and said cam members being arranged to ride in the notches 25 of said cleats, and also to engage the lugs 47 of the member 20 when the parts are being assembled.
The member 19 of the rim may be ermitted to remain permanently on the elly although, of course, it may be detached Whenever desired. Assuming said member 'to 'be inppo'sitio 'Oil the felly and the tire having been 4placeil in position thereon, the tire will be secured by the member 20 by pushi thexlatter' into position in the recess c 21' if t e niemeer 19, it being evidentthat it must'first beadjusted to a position Where the lugs 47 vvill enter the portions of the bayonet slots that are transversely disposed with respect to thefelly and also that the lug 48 must be properly positioned adjacent to the opening or socket37. The member 2O having been pushed into position until the lugs 47 are positioned in advance of the cam members 5,() of the ring 27, it next becomes i necessaryto turn the rm ,27 so as to move thei lugs47 into the an es of the ba onet slots in alinement with t e portions o said slots that are positioned longitudinally with respect to lthe felly. This 1s accomplished l byfirst .inserting the spindle and pinion portion of the Wrench into the socket 37 thereby unlocking the dog 34. Now, by turning the wrench, the ring 27 will be rotated about its axis causing the cam members 50 to engage the portions of theV lugs 47 that project beyond the inner face of the rim, thereby forcin said lugs into the angles of the bayonet s ots. By continued rotation of the Wrench the stud 49 will engage the lug 48, thereby turning the member 20 about its axis, and placin the lugs 47 within the longitudinal portions of the bayonet slots 46, thereby locking the members of the rim together and at the same time and by the same operation clenching the tire securely in position. Removal of the Wrench from the socket 37 causes the ring 27 to be locked in position by the dog 34. The parts may be disassembled by reversing the mode of operation. i
The member 19 of the rim is provided at a point which is preferably diametrically opposite to the socket 37 with a recess 53 into the inner end of which extends the valve nipple 54 of the inner tube 55 of the tire. The valve nipple is threaded for the reception of the specially constructed valve fixture 56 which extends laterally in an outvvard direction between the felly and the rim, the felly being provided with a recess 57 for the accommodation thereof. The X- ture 56 has an angular duct 58 and the outer end thereof is capped at 59. The Xture thus constructed permits the tire to be removed much more readily than if it Were extended in the customary manner, radially through the tire.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention vvlll be readil understood. The construction is simple, o such a nature as to permit the parts to be assembled with, the
reatest possible facility, and it has been ound to be in every respect thoroughly' usefu or the purposes for which it is prov1 e Having thus described the invention, `what said notches, means for movingsaid circumferentially to dispose said lugs within said notches, ratchet teeth formed on the in-r ner periphery of said rin and a bar pivot Within.a recess in said elly and rovi with teeth engageable with said rato et teeth whereby said ring may be held in adjusted position.
2. A wheel having the periphery of its felly provided with a circumferential recess, a demountable tire carrying rim associated with said felly, transverse cleats on the inner periphery of said rim bearing upon the periphery of said felly and provided with transverse notches, a circumferentially movable ring disposed within said recess, inclined lugs on the outer periphery of said ring disposed Within said notches, a plurality of rack teeth formed on the inner eripher of seid ring, a plurality of ratc et teeth ormed on the inner periphery of seid rin adjacent said rack teeth, a bar pivoted witin a recess in said felly and rovided with teeth normally engaging sai ratchet teeth, the end of said bar adjacent said rack teeth being provided with a curved recess, said curved recess and said rack teeth being adapted for the engagement of means for moving said ring circumferentially, engagement of said means Within said curved recess moving said bar out of engagement with said rack teeth.
