Evansville, in the. county of Vanderburg and-State of Indiana, have invented: certain new and useful Improvements in Channel Gutters for Sole-Stitching Machines; and I .do declarethe following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention",rsuch as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same;

With the foregoing general object in view, the invention resides in the novel features of construction and unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanyin drawings which form a part of this speci cation and in Which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, showing the application of my invention to a sole stitching machine;
Fig.2 is a horizontal section cut above the work support; and
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the channel cutter and its operating yoke.
In the drawings above briefly described, the numeral 1 designates the work support of a common type of sole stitching machine, 2 designates the presser foot, 3 the needle, and 4 the usual proceeding and receding feed dog which advances the sole 5 when the needle 3 is raised. The presser foot 2 is preferably provided with a roller 6 traveling upon the work, and with an eye 7 through which the needle 3 extends. It will be understood, however, that the construction of the machine constitutes no part of my invention, but that the features above set forth are shown only for the sake of illustrating the improved device applied to the machine. This device is intended principally for use upon the Singer machine, No. 45, but it is to be understood that it may also Specification of Ietters rat-tit.

Within this groove, the upper horizontal arm 9 of a substantially'C-shapedyoke 10 is slidably poasitiond, whereas the other'arm llofsaid yoke, which I term the operating arm is positioned underthe support 1 and abuts the dogA so thatrthe receding strokes of this dog will move the-entire yoke 10 so as to move the fchann'el cutter 12 along the lower side of fthC-BLSOlB 5, said cutter' being in the ;form ofa shortupstanding blade'carriedby theifr'eeend ofthe arm -9. *The return movement of the dog 4 and the consequent action of the yoke 11=and-the cutter 12, take place Jwhile the needle 3 passes through the sole 5 and holds the latter against possible movement with these parts. It will thus be observed that the blade 12 will form a shallow channel 13 in the lower side of the sole to receive the stitching formed by the needle and the other well known stitching mechanism.
To constrain the yoke 10 to follow the dog 4 upon the proceeding or working strokes thereof, a spring 14 bears against the vertical portion 15 of said yoke, said spring being preferably secured to the ed e of the work support 1 by a screw or t e like 16.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be obvious that although my invention is of extremely simple and inexpensive nature, and may be quickly and. easily applied to sole stitching machines, the device will be said work support, the upper arm of said yoke having a channel cutter, and the. lower arm of said yoke being operatively associated with said' feed dog for moving said yoke to operate the cutter upon the receding strokes of said dog.
