iMPROVEMENT IN CORN-PLANTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,082, dated July 30, 1872.

Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved corn-planter. Fig. 2 is a sectional front elevation.
The same letters of reference are used in both figures in the designation of identical parts.
The corn-planter illustrated in the annexed drawing has two tubular drills, A and B, into which the seed is delivered for deposition in the furrows opened by them through flexible tubes from the respective hoppers G and D. The discharge-openings in the bottoms of these hoppers are controlled by a sin gle'seedslide, E, which is reciprocated by the cam F on the axle G when the latter is compelled to turn with the wheels, as it must when the sections of the clutch H are in gear with each other, as shown. The disconnection of the sections of this clutch is accomplished by means of the foot-lever H near the drivers seat, acting through intermediate levers and rods upon one of the sections of such clutch against the tension of a spring, H which is employed to throw the sections in gear automatically. Suitable coverers are placed in rear of the respective drills for covering the seed,
after its deposition in the furrow, with loose soil. Each drill is rigidly fastened to a rockshaft, the one marked A to the shaft I, and the other, B, to the shaft K, so that they may be oscillated independently of each other. Each drill is also provided with a suitable handle, A and B, respectively, located in convenient reach of the driver. Thus, either one of the drills may be elevated to pass over an obstruction in its path, or by reason of other contingencies, while the other continues its functions uninterruptedly. In many cases it will be desirable to have the drills connected together, so that the driver may operate all with one hand, leaving his other free for the manipulation of the reins. For this purpose I employ a slide-bar, L, placed in bearings or loops l on one of the rock-shafts. One of its ends is linked to a lever, M, which is pivoted to one of the drills and provided with a convenient handle. The other end of the slide-bar, extending to within close proximity to the other drill, terminates in a crossbar, L, for engagement with the socket N on said drill when both drills'are to be united. The lever M affords the means for operating the slide-bar to either connect or disconnect the drills.
What I claim as my invention,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a series of drills fastened to independent rock-shafts, slide-bar L L, and socket N, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
