To all whom it may concern. Be it known that I, JAMES GLnNnom-a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Olmsted and State of -Minnesota, have invented anew and useful Dirigible Headlight, .of which the following isa specificatio a This invention relates to dirigible headlights for automobiles, one of its objects being to provide operating mechanism for headlights of this character which is simple and efiicient, will operate smoothly and with the minimumfriction, and which will not interfere with or be broken by the movement.

With the foregoing and other objects in view whichwill appear as the description proceeds, the invention consist of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.

The housing 8 is connected to and supported by a rod 10 the ends of which are slidable within housings 11 secured on the springs S 'of the automobile. The same arrangement may be provided within these housings as in the housings 4 friction being reduced in both housings, if desired, by antifriction balls or rollers 12 interposed between the bottom of the housings and the movable members therein.
Lamp supporting brackets are extended laterally and upwardly from the sides of the radiator R of the automobile, as shown at 13, and each of these brackets has a cylindrical housing 14 formed of a fixed section 15 and hinged or door sections 16. The section 15 has superposed disks 17 secured thereto and each provided with a central upwardly extending boss 18. Each boss has a race for a series of antifriction balls 19 or the like on which a cap 20 is supported for rotation. The caps are secured to and rotate with a stem or post 21 the upper end of which is connected to and supports a lamp 22 while the lower end has a crank arm 23. A rod 2 1 is connected at its ends to these crank arms and at its center to the top of the housing 8. A brace rod 25 may be extended between and secured to the housings 14.
It will be apparent that when the chassis of the automobile moves relative to the running gear by reason of the springs S supporting the same, the housing 8 will work upon the arm 6. Any longitudinal movement of the rod 2 caused by the turning of the front wheels W of the automobile will result in a side thrust against the housing 8 with the result that the rod 10 and rod 24 will. be correspondingly moved, sensing the lamps to be rotated to throw the light rays in the direction in which the machine 1 turned. i
By opening the housings the bearings therein can be cleaned and repaired readily.
The various antifriction bearings cause the" apparatus to operate easily.
